Rec Request: If you liked God of War...

My friend and I are looking for new games to play! Between us, we have a PS3/360/Wii. We've played through all three God of Wars and the Devil May Cry games, which we absolutely adored, but where do we go next? We want something with a lot of violence, and a fun story (around the God of War level). Thanks!

It's stupid as fuck, and kind of shallow in the fighting mechanics, but Dante's Inferno was surprisingly fun.

As much as people like to make fun of Kratos' constant rage, I don't think there are any action games in this vein that have as well done of a story as the God of War games, so you might be out of luck on that variable.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Bayonetta are pretty damn fun though, I'd recommend taking a look at those.

    Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, definitely.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. Boss fights are a bit on the weak side but overall it's an incredible crowd-fighting game. Might be a bit slow-paced for your liking but honestly when you do your first combat takedown and see Bats dislocate a dude's hip then break his leg you'll wince.

If you're at all a fan of Wolverine, I suggest looking into the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game that came out alongside the movie. It's very much "God of War starring Wolverine," though not as polished. Don't let the move tie-in aspect scare you away; it's actually a well done and fun game. However, I'd say that if you're not a fan of the character, you probably won't find it to be as fun. 360 version has a demo, so give that a try before going further.

Bayonetta's probably your best bet. I personally haven't played it, but from I've heard it's very much in the style of DMC.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma and NG2 are crazy over the top with the violence (especially the second game), and are quite fun (Black/Sigma being the superior game, IMO). I believe Sigma II (PS3 port of NG2) had the violence heavily censored, so I suggest checking out the original version on the 360. Just be prepared for high difficulty and an annoying as fuck camera.

Castlevania: Lord of Shadows is a great God of War clone.
Bayonetta is by the creator of Devil May Cry, but it's better. Get the 360 version.

Bayonetta, in my opinion, is the best melee action game since God Hand. Since you will probably have a hard time snagging the latter, give Bayo a try.

Also the new Castlevania takes a lot from God of War. I wasn't a fan of it myself, but dudes seem to like it so maybe give that one a go. Warning though, it's incredibly long.

Bayonetta has probably the best combat system of any game I've ever played.

Arkham Asylum and Enslaved both have that fluid combat system you're wanting.

Mad World seems like a pretty obvious suggestion.
    And yes, Bayonetta.

None of the games mentioned here really have a fun story

But if you want the violence and fun, go for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I'm not sure I'd really compare Arkham Asylum to the likes of Bayonetta/DMC/God of War, but hey, any excuse to pick it up, use it.

Castlevania is definitely an acquired taste, I pushed through (as everyone said it started badly) and still really didn't get to anything I liked so I traded it in. I'd give it a rent, not a buy.

Speaking of "acquired" tastes, I REALLY enjoyed Conan on the PS3. It's incredibly unpolished and has dubious combat mechanics but damn it I found it fun. It's like a "b-movie" God of War. Some of the bosses were pretty impressive (check out the Sand Dragon), it's gory and it has boobs in it. The story is dumb, fun and forgettable.

Also if you mash triangle you do this move that lets you lop both arms off your enemy.

    And it's about £5 nowadays.

This, this, a thousand times this. Bayonetta is simply one of the best games ever made and I don't even like fighting games.

Get Bayonetta (for 360 for obvious reasons).

    Laugh at every other game.

Oh, and I have to mention the Bayonetta strategy guide that only came out in Europe. If you can import it for cheap, grab it. The thing is amazing; I never seen such an in depth guide outside of Japan before.

Heavenly Sword has yet to be mentioned. Awesome game, bit on the short side but the story is great, acting is good and I really enjoyed the combat in it.

One of few games I've played through more than once.

Oh yeah, HS is pretty awesome. The cutscene direction is outstanding in particular; that was my one few complaint with Enslaved, fewer cutscenes to let Andy Serkis show his craft.

The best action game on the 360. Go get it, NOW.
