I think its just a lot of the other groups have off-campus support, both financially and with their administration, from other organisations and churches etc. With our group it was pretty much entirely student run, and with that comes the risk of burning out, which happens when all the people running it are 4th years.
But yeah we are all to aware of the awful hilarity of a group of apathetic naysayers naysaying their own apathy.
I'm at university up in Queensland (Bond Uni) and that's a major problem we have with our student societies - relatively small population (~4,500 peak, which includes a deluge of exchange students every 2nd semester) combined with administrative burdens on purely student-run organisations (which is your problem, I'm assuming).
