This history class I've signed up for ends with a 25 page paper
So, uh, that ought to be a fun experience

Had to put my netbook in pawn so I could do things like get a haircut (still long-ish but it had been over three months and I was getting dangerously close to mullet territory with how long the back was) and buy food, so I've got to use the computer lab tomorrow to write my essay due on Monday. School is closed Monday for MLK day but we have to have out essays emailed in by midnight that day.

Man how is everyone already getting notified about acceptances and stuff? I don't find out about any place until March.
Still need to see about the land under my name (as in will it fuck up my financial aid, though my parents say it isn't worth very much despite being a large plot). I'd like to at least start gathering paperwork together (documentation that I own that land, bank account, general health and dentistry providers, birth certificates, etc) in case I have to leave the house in a huff.

As soon as you get the topic start researching and writing it. I cannot really stress that enough. 25 pages for someone who has never written more than 10 is probably going to be an absolute agony so you will not want to put it off in any way shape or form.
What I like to do when writing papers is start with a bunch of note cards. On each of the note cards write one thing you are going to have to talk about or want to talk about. Then on the back of the card write all the sources you are going to use when talking about that card.
After I've done that, I typically have anywhere from 50-100 note cards with ideas and sources. Sometimes the note cards are overarching themes/topics and other times they're just specific facts I want to mention. Either way I have a lot of note cards.
From there I can organize the note cards into a coherent paper and then write it using the note cards as a frame and just filling in the rest with stuff like personal inferences, analysis, transitions, etc.

I'm so glad I have two years of accounting experience since I just started accounting at school. The teacher moves at a decently fast pace and without the experience I'd probably be lost.
Fortunately it's currently like taking a really great refresher course - I'm doing what I already know, but I'm getting practice at a wider variety of examples.

at most profs here ask for a one-page sample the first week
our big papers are like six pages (prior to this semester and my first fourth year class, I've never written anything over 2500 words)
this is as an english/women's studies major, btw
Do you go to clown college?
nope! the university of guelph, canada.
H5 me too!
excellent
we will have to meet up for lunch or something at the bullring or the brass taps depending upon how much of it you want to be food and how much you want to be drunk

How are you writing so little? Most intro classes I took had me writing 3-5 page papers every other week at least and 9-12 page papers at the end of the quarter.
I am lucky
My longest paper ever is this semester. 4500 words for a fourth year course. I think it might be a group project even so I don't have to write that much. :!:

I have yet to write an essay longer than 2000 words
This coming Semester has a 5000 word project though so that will be an introduction to the world of long-ass papers.

:hifive:
people expect as an english major I write lots
no, but people actually care about composition instead of other disciplines' vomit from a butt
I do not understand how writing well and enjoyably is optional
it is a mystery

Hi5
I am a History student and people also expect me to do really long papers.
What they forget is that often being able to put things succinctly rather than having lots of filler is actually applauded by many essay markers. And yes, I agree, if you enjoy what you are writing then you write better, and shorter essays are more enjoyable to write (for me anyway)

My friends and I have discovered the best way to have a private room for studying at our library. That is signing up for one of our many personal viewing rooms. Take out a movie and get a classroom for free!

Lunch sometime sounds good to me. Before TAing picks up this semester I shouldn't be too busy. Shoot me a PM of when you'd be able to meet.
people talking to me about their lab reports blah blah "oh yeah I've got ten pages, I was going to do more but I ran out of time"
"oh I.. I pretty much covered everything in 3 and a bit"
*gets 9/10 on the report*

but that works too!
Something which is enjoyable to read was usually enjoyable to write as well
But yeah they don't teach us essay composition and I don't know why, seeing how important it is
the only topic covered more thoroughly is how to use electronic journals
damn I miss that
it's downright eerie
And on top of that they still needed an all girls residence!
Seriously even someone as inept with women as me had no problems
And next quarter I embark on my senior undergraduate thesis of a minimum 25 pages.
By chance do you go to Waterloo?
also, imagine all the writing once I transfer to UW journalism
it's highschool calc
The lesson I have learned here is "write bullshit your professor will agree with."

at least the people they yell here are just dumb kids and not schizos like at the library
think I'll just stop editing now

There's a high school girl in my Calc 2 class. Clearly I cannot do worse than her or I will die from the shame.
There was a 17 year old girl in my Calc 1 class that later on went to Harvard for premed.....
She was pretty hot...
