What kind of badges will you be giving out for this?
We have three day badges for those willing to do at least 12 hours of DMing over the weekend. We can't give a badge for those doing only the DM Challenge, but we have plenty of space to fit DMs in who would like to add the other 8 hours and get a badge.

No issues from me Soco. 4th edition has by far been the easiest D&D I've taught, and works best by jumping in and playing. I've even got my hat in to judge a few official learn to play sessions. I'm thinking something lower level heroic, classic crawl style, so there shouldn't be too much to confuse people.
Line D&D

I'd be interested but I haven't played D&D for about 20 yrs. So if you're willing to hand hold me some then count me in.
BCBarney, no worries. Like I said, its easy to learn 4th, and I've never had a problem teaching it.
As far as Dice Rollers are concerned. . . I suggest dice! Kidding aside, I think conventions are great time to test stuff so if you have something you want to play with, bring it. For others, I will have extra dice.
Speaking of being able to test/play with stuff. The level will be 2nd, perfect for early morning, haven't played for awhile type game. Plus you get a magic item. You may bring you'r own character but I'll bring some.
I will be accepting up to six players. With back-ups if demand dictates (I can always bring a 2nd copy of the adventure if enough people want to play). With three interested already I'm pretty confident we'll have enough to play that day.
We'll meet inside the convention Center, but before you get in line. (Need to find that map someone made up). At 7:15, if people are missing, we go in anyway, since this is supposed to be a fun thing to do, for those waiting in line.

No I was saying something to roll on in line. I've got a clipboard with a compartment below that I thought may work. Wouldn't be the first time I played on a clipboard. My previous group didn't really have a proper set up so I kept my character sheet on one and rolled on it. With the exception of the occasional escaping die it worked well.
Thats a pretty neat idea. I was planning to do the same thing I did last year, which is sitting on the cold, grueling tile floor. I'll be working out of a binder so if we end up standing at the end, but still feel the strong urge to finish up, we'll have a verticle/flat surface to tape on the map.
Oh no! They released the map of the convention center for the show!
But why is that bad Brian? We are geeks and we love maps.
Because they split the line this year. If I am reading the map correctly there will be one line for those heading to the show floor and another line for those heading to the keynote. I'm heading to the key note.
On a positive note, the Line Game is now sponsored by StufferShack.com! We're working to arrange a small prize to those who participate.

Damn it. I think you are correct, witch is a problem. I really want to play but I really don't want to see the keynote.
Well that's too bad lucek. I know Soco said in another thread he was heading to the keynote. We'll see who else can be grabbed.
The other schedules said doors open at 10. I imagine thats not quite true. It's still winter here in Boston and I don't imagine they're going to make people wait outside and only then make two lines right before the events start.

And yet another complication! Doors don't open till 8 AM on Friday! That's less than two hours of play once we get in line, which is no more than two encounters really. I need to think this over a little.
Barney and Soco, were you guys planning on the keynote? Since you're both a little dnd rusty maybe that's the direction we should be heading. Something like a 4th edition primer. It's a bit more informal but also more open.
So I'm talking to everyone again now. I could show the new character sheets, boot the laptop for the character builders, talk about some of the changes. Less of a formal game, and more of, we delay getting in line ten minutes to make sure we're getting in line with people who we know we have something we want to talk about. I could bring an encounter and the pregens, so if people want to try an encounter great, without the worries of making it an adventure.
This isn't Dungeons and Dragons exactly, but would anyone be interested in a Paranoia game on Saturday? I've been wanting to run one for a while, but my regular D&D group isn't into the whole backstabbing thing.
I plan on seeing the keynote. I was hoping to run & sign up for the munchkin tournament on my way to the keynote line but it looks like I won't be able to do that & see the keynote.
Awesome stuff, is there a place for people to like, sign up for games? my friend and I will be going to pax for the first time this year and would love to get in on some. Just not quite sure how to go about that, sorry to interrupt the conversation, but we're just pumped about this, any help would be appreciated. (we're both Regular D&D/Dark heresy/Starwars d20 players if uh...that helps)
Some people look for players ahead of time. A lot of other games will be pick up, in the free play area.
Wizards of the Coasts announced they will be doing lines, instead of sign ups for all their games. I'm waiting to hear back on something before I schedule my other unofficial game. I'll announce it here when I know the time, and will be open to people calling spots.

I haven't played D&D for about 20 years now (I'm 34). The last time I played was with the books that look like the current "red box" set along with many others. If I decided to try the beginner sessions what would I need to bring with me? Just a pencil? Dice?
Any ideas on how far ahead we'll need to line up for these sessions?
Official Learn to Play Sessions, from Wizards, requires only you to show up.
Last year they did sign ups instead of lines, so its hard to say how early you need to show for something. I don't expect demand to be too huge for those games, but I believe they're still looking for judges for some slots so it might be tight at times.
I'd guess at 20-30 minutes early isn't the worst idea. Plus, waiting in the line at D&D also leads to interesting conversations. Especially if you're a new or returning player. Great time to see some new stuff, and ask some questions.

The Learn to Play sessions shouldn't be too bad of a wait.
On the other hand, the DM challenge and Heroes of Shadow preview might be harder to get in on. I've been informed that there will probably be 6 tables of Kalarel's Revenge running on Friday night. That is 36 slots for all of PAX East. Luckily for me it will be happening during the Friday night concert (I don't attend the concerts), so hopefully the demand will be less. I still plan to be in line for probably 2 hours (prepared to eat dinner and play some Munchkin, Smallworld, and Mad Scientist University). I want to say that last year there were 9 tables of for the DM challenge, but who knows how many will sign up this year.

Bring your own dice! I don't know what these mooks are telling you, but every die has a natural stock of 20s/otherwise good rolls, and once exhausted, they must recharge. The last thing you want is for someone to hand you a set of dice that's had all the good rolls used up!
Or maybe I'm just crazy and need to stop treating my dice like Golum treats the One ring.
Somewhere in my shed are my dice from middle school - keeping dice for 20+ years just in case I need them again is probably a sign of madness.
I'm certain there's no chance I can find them in time for PAX and if I do probably squirrels have chewed through the bag by now so I'll take your advice and pick up a nice new set at PAX before hitting the beginner's game. I already wanted to get some dice bags for my Cthulhu Dice and Zombie Dice so why not treat myself to a new set while I'm there...

I plan on bringing what I need to play/run a variety of tabletop RPGs, including Paranoia. Most definitely interested in playing.
Now, this is my first PAX. How can I expect things to be in the main room? Is there a way games are organized, or do you just grab a few interested parties and roll with it? If it was free-form, I hit on the idea of printing off a notice I can put up by the entrance with the games I can run/play and a way to contact me.

It's not a bad idea. A nice set of dice won't set you back much. I remember that my black and Grey dice I got for $3.00, on the other hand you can get Fing fancy for under $20. The best set I've ever bought was only $6.00. it was a smoky black. When it was on the table it looked like obsidian and when you held it up to the light it looked clear. Got them for my sister at the last PAX.
That said you could just go nuts and pick up a bag of dice, or cup of dice. last year there wer some booths practically giving dice away if you got a random assortment.

It's the BEST kind of madness!
Here's the full truth behind it, from DM of the rings (basically, anyone who'll be playing with dice that aren't there's should read this).
The Truth About 20-Sided Dice:
There are a limited number of “twenties” in any given d20. That is, no matter how many times you roll a d20, you cannot roll another twenty once the supply has run out. These twenties can only be replenished by rolling a corresponding one with the same die. Thus every gamer is duty-bound to protect their supply of good rolls. If a friend rolls a twenty using your die, not only have they stolen your good roll, but they have doomed you to the extra one required to replenish the twenty.
Some players get excited when they roll several twenties in a row, concluding the dice are “hot”. Don’t make this blunder! This is like driving your car for 400 miles without gassing up, and then concluding that your car is a perpetual motion machine. After a few good rolls, pass the die off to an unwitting companion and let them charge it up for you.
Statisticians have known about this behavior for years. They call it “the probability seesaw”. Unlike the bell-shaped curve, in the seesaw system the odds of rolling high or low is directly proportional to what has been rolled in the past. They usually pretend this isn’t true. If a statistician hands you a die insisting that “any given roll has the same odds of rolling a one or a twenty”, it means he’s handing you a depleted die in the hopes of taking advantage of you. Don’t fall for it!
Now the secret is yours. Please put this knowledge to good use*.
*By “good use” I mean, “take advantage of other players”.
One idea I had was an Epic level battle. I've never run one and never played one but I'd be willing to run a level 30+ red dragon of I can get some level 30 PC's to fight it. Any takers?

I was figuring sometime after 7:45 maybe 8:00. there's a panel I want to see that get's out at 7:30 and I'd like to grab a bite to eat before gaming.
That said a little warning. I've written this already and it's not going to be deep RP or an awesome story, just a big scary beasty in front of you and a town full of tasty dragon chow behind you.
Still lots of room in the earlier games. If we don't get people ahead of time, I'll still try to run, but I'll likely let those who are grabbed choose which scenario they want to play. To those who show up go the goodies.

I actually have the Colossal Red Dragon by WTOC. I have yet to bring it out for any campaign. I need to just run an epic level campaign sometime just so I can use it and the Orcus "mini" I bought. My groups tend to fizzle out before we can get there, with school and things people tend to get busy at some point.

D&D 4E
Probably Friday night in the table top area.
I was just about to ask if anyone was going to run a Friday night game that I could join.. and I've never been in the Epic tier either, but wanted to find one game for it. I'm in, assuming it's after 7 PM (end of the last panel I really want to see).
@Durinthal
