So on Saturday BBCA is playing the most recent season of Dr. Who before the new episode starts. Will this be enough for me to catch up and start the new series, or do I need to go further back?
If it's all of last year's series, you'll be fine. The only things worth mentioning in terms of backstory would be that, if mortally wounded, the Doctor can regenerate (he's now in his eleventh incarnation), and at the end of the previous story, The End of Time, the Tenth Doctor more-or-less destroys his own race, the Time Lords.

Just put them back in the timeline where they would end up destroyed as they originally had.

Pretty much! I'd just watch Series 5 without anything before that. The first episode, Eleventh Hour does a very good job of introducing the show to new people.
And it'll be fairly awesome if you watch Series 5, like it, then go back to 2005's Series 1, watch it all back up to 2010 and see how he ended up

in a destroyed TARDIS hurtling to Earth.
Make sure you find the Christmas episodes though. Netflix had a bad habit of not including them with the regular series collections which meant I saw the end of series 4 to series 5 and had no idea why
He was a new Doctor and hurtling towards earth in a destroyed Tardis.
Realized halfway through series 5 I had missed "The Planet of the Dead", "The Waters of Mars", and "The End of Time". Still need to watch this past Christmas' special, "A Christmas Carol".
Don't forget the 2009 Christmas special, The Next Doctor, which sits between the end of series 4 and Planet of the Dead. It also culminates in one of the earliest and biggest 'clues' (for want of a better word) in regards to the series 5 story arc.

That one, and the ones from series 1-3, were actually included in the series collections. Where the ones I listed were somehow left out. Which is how I missed them since I didn't realize that the Christmas episode each series started with was actually a special outside of the normal season.
Planet of the Dead/Waters of Mars/End of Time were a set of specials that were made in lieu of another season with Tenant. You could call it series 4.5, in a way. They're all on Netflix Instant by now, so for those wanting to go from ten to eleven, don't forget 'em.

Truly sad news. That's two icons of the show within a few weeks. I mean, I was raised on VHS tapes of Classic Who and Sarah Jane and The Brig were just... I don't know, two characters that are etched onto my consciousness.
So unexpected as well. Apparently Elisabeth Sladen had had cancer for a while.

Liz Sladen dying is very sad. Definitely a favorite of mine.
They apparently filmed the beginning and end of series 5 (first 4 and last 2) of the Sara Jane Adventures last year to accommodate the schedule of the actor who plays Luke . Don't know if they finished any more episodes before the cancer became too much last month.

Man, if they do another episode to end it, they need to get every living actor who's played the Doctor in it.
To be brutally honest, the Sarah Jane Adventures were not all that great, they were very much kids shows, they are enjoyable but nowhere near the level of Who. Although the episodes with the respective doctors "The Wedding of Sarah Jane" and "Death of the Doctor" are really really good.
And the episode with the Brig was just marvelous, such a shame that he never got a chance to be in the revived series.
Alright, so the show premires this saturday, but I don't have BBC America on my campus.
I am happy to download it legally (plus, they monitor P2P at my school), but is there any word on if it'll be released on itunes shortly after the premiere?
Halp! Need new Who like a crack whore needs a sad backstory.
That is incredibly sad news. I loved the 4th Doctor episodes with her (saw at least one, maybe more?) and I was delighted when she came back. I was feeling kinda sad, but then that video Gamer put up...
They announced Lis' death on CBBC earlier today, before showing an episode of Sarah Jane Smith's adventures. SJS Adventures is CBBC's highest rated show.
I didn't get to see it, but apparently they they did a whole bit telling the kids it was okay to be sad about the news and that they could get advice and leave messages on the CBBC website if they were upset. Most of the responses are from the UK, but there are odd comments from France, Germany and the US.
There's going to be a 15 minute tribute to Sarah on BBC 1 at 6.45pm on Saturday, immediately after the Doctor Who season premier. I don't know if it'll be broadcast in the US also, but it should be available on the BBC website.

I remember hearing somewhere that that was the very last line Davies wrote, and then got up from the computer, and Moffat sat down and carried on
Oh shit. Hope it's not true!
i loved her character, even though i only saw her in the new series
so sad

I made a thread once. It didn't end well for me.

Think they'll keep it going with the kids?

Awww.
I am curious to how they'll treat this in show. Hopefully something nice.
If he does, I hope the Doctor puts him in a box. Or lets him roam the thousands of empty TARDIS corridors forever.
Sorry Sarah. I'll miss you. But I won't miss your dog.
