Why did that little girl know who Amy was? And why did she want her autograph?

Uh it was maybe because of
the big damn banner ad in the mall where Amy was the model for that perfume
"For the girl who's tired of waiting"

    Great tagline
I like that it was called "Petrichor", too.

I guess I'm the only person who thought this episode was mostly boring filler. The only joy I got from it was from reflecting on its overall purpose.

They brought Craig back for a second episode and the best they could do was to re-use a resolution point? Really? Hey Craig, feel strong emotions again to overcome your doom. Well done. Again.

    My ultimate theory:
River goes to prison because everyone *thinks* she kills the Doctor. She goes along with the plan to fake the Doctor's death because she loves him that much. That's why he really doesn't have any compunction about breaking her out of prison for random trips.

So who is the Impossible Astronaut?

It's the Doctor of course. When he walks up to the suit, he's expecting it to be be River, he's expecting to actually die... "Don't worry, I know it's you.'

And the visor lifts and this music starts playing...

    'Well then.'

"Yeah, except sometimes knowing your own future is what enables you to change it especially if you're bloody minded contradictory and completely unpredictable."

I listened to that and then listened again realizing how good and fitting it is two the whole 11th doctor.

    MMMMMMMMMMMMMOOOOOFFFFFFEEEETTTTTTTT!

god I can't wait for next week.

    I agree with this, mostly.

I enjoyed watching Matt be a dick for the first half but it descends into sentiment pretty quickly and I don't even mind sentiment but this felt very paint-by-numbers. There's a saying about how you know you've got problems with your script when your characters feel the need to point them out. And honestly I'm surprised anyone gives a shit about Craig. Did we really need to ever see him again? Of all the people the Doctor's met in two hundred years, this is the one guy he wants to hang out with before he dies?

  • DoodmannDoodmann Registered User regular
Craig is an amazing foil to the doctor because he isn't a companion but knows everything, was his roommate and isn't pure evil. In the grand scheme of things he is probably the closest thing the doctor has to a normal friend. I think it makes a lot of sense that he would want to check on Craig before everything went south.

I agree that this was an excellent episode, just plain fun (Might be because I actually know that department store/location :P) However
The whole "Defeat it with wuvv! thing would have been far better if it had just been Try to Purge Emotions - Nope rather than milking it out.
Loved the full circle of the Stetson and envelopes, wished Craig had just started using the stormy nickname..

But that happened in 1969 and the Astronaut suit was left behind. And now it's been retrieved or replaced in the 51st Century for River to be put into so she can kill the Doctor in the present day an- you know what you're right none of us have any fucking idea who will eventually be the last one in the suit.

But the fact remains that River is right now in the suit, in Lake Silencio, most likely post-hypnotically suggested through the Silents to kill the Doctor and is all set to go.

At the end of this episode, River seems to react with a little more than just confusion when they bring in the space suit, and Eyepatch Lady says "You never really escaped us, Melody Pond".
So I'm assuming she has been/will be in it more than once.

Edit: Gah, slow. Yes, what Gatsby said.

The Silence believe it's her. The Doctor has been led to believe it's her. The audience has been led to believe it's her.

So it's probably not her because where would be the surprise?

Random speculation for the end and future
My belief is that by the end of this (whatever the resolution), people think the Doctor is dead and he'll sort of move on to a sort of urban legend status among the time travel aware species. If they're aware of his reputation, people won't believe it's actually him and will treat him as an impostor.

See I was thinking this too, but his reaction to the Ponds sudden apperance and his vague talk about him getting his companions killed put together with the end of last episode makes me think that he got rid of the Ponds because he decided it was time for him to die.

Remember, River was the one who told the Ponds and us that he was older than the Ponds knew, and the Doctor knows of his death but he dosent know that he was however old he said he was, i need to rewatch that episode.

Yea that would be neat if
On his last night he spends it with River on her last night, and gives her his sonic screw driver since he wont need it anymore.

Also I just watched the begining of the Impossible Astronaut:

I still think that the Doctor that hung out with Craig was the one right after the end of God Complex, which is the Doctor from the End of Impossible Astronaut, but not the 1100 year old Doctor that had those experiances with River on Easter Island, she used the same event as a gauge with Doctor that died and the Doctor that she slapped later in that episode.

I got nothing for you now. Try again later.

    you know what I liked
how this is clearly an older Doctor than the one we saw at the end of the God Complex. Not just the hair (different haircut and darker color, as noted by my obsessive friends), not just the makeup that accentuated Smith's lines, but the attitude. No longer an old man in a young man's body, but an ancient man in a too young body. And it shows.

    Oh yeah.

That's why Smith is the Best Doctor. He plays the Doctor as incredibly alien and incredibly old, without cutting the manic energy.

    Amazing, no mistake.

    Impossible Astronaut question:
Is the Doctor who dies wearing a long coat or a short one? Because after 'A Good Man Goes to War' he starts wearing a longer trench coat. I don't know how this will play into everything but it'd be a really good attention to detail if the Doctor at the Lake was wearing a long coat and no one really noticed or paid attention until now.

    Also, regarding the God Complex:
I really really liked Rita and the second she came on screen I was hoping she would be the next companion (especially when he fired Amy and told Rita he would show her the universe.

Imagine the banter for when they are on a strange world with someone sick and she goes up and says "I'm a doctor, I can help" and Matt Smith replies with "I'm THE Doctor, I always help"

    But then she died. Goddammit

Concerning the finale and the eyepatches:
Someone mentioned they think it contains an image of the Silence so you never forget them? That person was probably on to something because the prequel for the finale showed two soldiers, with eye patches, looking at these empty tanks where we saw the Silence being stored. Then it showed the Silence ... it was edited so you didn't know what they were looking at until the end.

Not sure if spoilers, but I think Craig's significance has to do with the fact that we saw a Silence ship in The Lodger, as well as two instances of the characters looking off camera, turning away, and seemingly forgetting why they did (Amy's "Hey!" during the football match time skip, and the Doctor forgetting about the body of the dead pilot in the ship, later stating the ship to have been "abandoned" in "Day of the Moon".)

edit: I also have a similar theory regarding the eyepatches.
