Kibbutzing Around

So recently a friend and I have been talking about the idea of leaving the country and going abroad, and we're looking for a place to stay where we might exchange labour for food and a place to stay. Something similar to a Kibbutz, but not a Kibbutz. Basically, a communal kind of setting where we might, for a time, work for our stay.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to even begin looking for information on this. From the research I've done so far, all I've found are communes for people wanting something close to permanent, whereas we just want a place to stay for a time, a few months max. We figure, once we know what our options are, then we can decide on what country to go to.

I'm looking for any information on how to go about doing this. Where can I find a place that will accommodate us? Has anyone from the forums done something similar to this? Was your experience memorable, would you recommend it to others?

I know someone who did something like this in New Zealand. I don't know really know details of his stay and I don't talk to him much, but I know he had an awesome time, so it might be a place to start to look.

I believe you're looking for an orchard.

There are stacks, all around Australia, of orchards looking for backpackers to pick fruit and veg. Maybe a few less, given the droughts of recent years (and other things, like locusts), but I'd assume there's still plenty of work. I don't know the situation of other countries, but it's something to google?

It sounds like you want to go WWOOFing. I've done it in Ireland and Italy, but they have host farms all over the world. Most of it is farm/gardening work, but I did some stone masonry, too.

I had some friends that did this and they spoke pretty highly of it. They only did it for like 6 months and then they moved on to something else (darn nomadic hippies and their freedom).

CouchSurfing.com isn't what you're looking for, but you may be able to use it as a jumping off point.

I have a friend doing 4 months in Mexico with something like this. I'm not sure if it's with this program but since she is on an organic, communal run farm it sounds a lot like this. She's loving it.
