I really want shapeshifting to be a cool and not a complete waste
how is shapeshifting a waste?
if im recalling correctly you cant cast most other spells while shapeshifted, and there arent enough other feats to take tha improve your combat abilities to make up for the lack of spellcasting

For most of DA1 you were simply The Protagonist (Warden) anyway though.
you're completely missing the point some of us were making
you can't see the difference between choosing your race, gender, and class and having that determine which of six opening sequences you play through compared to only being able to choose your gender and class and playing through the same opening every time?
Well I guess that's true. To be honest I played it a while ago so I can't really remember how often your origin came up at all during the quests.

Even ignoring if they ever came up again, although they did, I thought that the opening origin stories were compelling enough to make you want to make a guy for each one just to see how they went (and that's ignoring whether you played them good or bad, so if you were really obsessive you could play each one twice). I didn't just because of time restrictions but I wanted to.

you're pretty much trading out your impressive complement of spells for lackluster melee combat and abilities
best mage builds involve Blood Mage or Arcane Warrior

It came up in some conversations and spawned a couple of quests, IIRC.
But given how much personality we as players invest in our protagonists when we're playing these games, being able to chose such a wide variety of backgrounds goes a long way towards making the story yours. Which is why a lot of people love them.
Even in ME2, people give Shepard character traits like "hates Batarians", "hates space nazis" or "hates Emily Wong". None of those are explicit in the game but people give Shepard character traits to explain why their mild-mannered alien-friendly Shepard leaves Batarians to die. And that's a single base protagonist who you're allowed to imbue with your own personality. Sure he's a spacer and a survivalist but those are really minimal differences from my earthborn war hero.
In DA you not only create a variation on a single character through the choices you make, but he or she really is a distinct character, with established realtionships with characters you meet later on, different upbringings and different outlooks on the world.
When the first hour or more of gametime are spent talking to certain characters and getting their worldviews and backstories, it affects how I view the rest of the game world. Much more so than a few mentions of my race and background would imply.
And don't underestimate how much it changed my experience meeting characters I'd interacted with later on in the game. The semi-random NPC who's a racist fuck to your elf was my human's best friend.
Sorry, rambling. The point is that yeah, it wasn't as smooth an experience as ME2, and I love ME2's action-RPG gameplay. But there's a lot to be said for an old-fashioned RPG where you carve out your own story within a world.
I hope customizable weapon and armor mods make a comeback in ME3. It'd be kinda cool if they let you piecemeal your allies' appearance the same way you can assemble Shepard's armor but I doubt that will happen.

Yeah, if there's one thing I missed from ME1 to 2, it was customising your weapons. Even weapon stats would have been welcome. I know, I know, the difference was pretty obvious once you used your weapon for a few minutes, but even so.

It's just another way of making the game more yours. My Shepard rocked a sniper that could only do one shot a minute but by golly that shot killed whomever it hit.
ME2 did a great job of parring down the hundred options and thingies in ME1, and delivering a few really polished ones instead. I don't miss dozens of assault rifles that were essentially slight stat upgrades, when instead I have three rifles that feel distinct and memorable. And it has to be said that there's not much difference between loading your rifle with cryo bullets and activating your cryo bullet power.
Still, I do love customising. I love being able to make Shepard my own dude (or dudette), and I like knowing that my gun isn't just the baseline assault rifle but is loaded with super bullets that fuck shit up. Heck, I'm such a customisation whore you could let me rock a solid gold Normandy and I'd be all over that shit.
Because I'm just that classy.

I was willing to accept the lack of customization as a tradeoff for not dealing with that inventory
ME3 should have a grid on shepards back like the RE4 suitcase

I'm looking forward to finishing ME1 and playing ME2 and not having to worry as much about how much crap I am carrying or converting it all to Omni-Gel or selling it or whatever.
This is far more Omni-Gel and far more credits than I will ever use.

Some people liked the old inventory/omni-gel/credits thing but I much prefer the streamlined new system

because customizing your face, background, and making your own story decisions don't accomplish this at all :P
the beauty of ME2's combat is in it's simplicity
I'm hoping they don't tweak things around too much in the next game

you have any idea how hard that shoe polish is to get off?
My Shepard punched her in the face twice. Once in each game.

BTW, the renegade responses to the Asari in the Citadel in ME2? Solid gold.
