like, if I just told people everything that was wrong with Tron, convinced them that it wasn't a good movie, I might be at peace with myself enough to like it

Maybe the film is more about the spectacle than the story.

What would any programs do anywhere? Why not a nightclub? What else are they gonna do? His dads clothes went to the same place Sams clothes went? You need an umbrella because Flynn added in weather since the original Grid, and water all up in your face is annoying. The train doesn't usually go to the portal, it was only going there cause Clu wanted it to go there to meet the ship.

    And software is so gay

Attaches his whip to the railing. Subs didn't run fully submerged for long periods in the 30s.

Anyway, Tron. Looks pretty, but I never had any interest in the original so I don't think I'll bother.

Yeah I didn't really get a feel for what the hell actually happened in the grid, that's true

There wasn't any insight into how it worked and what the programs did, I don't even know how their functions were abstracted

I mean that in the sense of... do they perform their functions passively, just by existing? Or do they have "jobs", do they need to travel from location to location, what do they actually do

the way I understand it, the Grid hadn't been populated by people other than Flynn, who was still working on it, so all the programs that he created, which may have had a use, had been re purposed by CLU to just fuck around or whatever

Well, the programs in the original were part of ENCOM's actual network and they actually all had computer-y functions to perform

I think The Grid in the new movie was just Flynn's big ol' sandbox to play around in and when he created all those programs he didn't actually create them for specific functions necessarily

this is the impression I got too.

He wasn't creating programs for any specific purpose apart from building a utopia. He wanted to make the perfect system in the context of the system itself. "The Grid" was just the name of his system.

Through this work and creating such a stable and perfect system
The Isos showed up, which he wasn't expecting, which made the whole thing infinitely more important.

Also I don't really care if programs aren't for anything in particular or if it the plot doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the context of a computer system because it's a science fiction fantasy movie

I also think it's funny that death in the grid could just be subverted by having an external hard drive hooked up to the computer that is constantly backing everything up.

I could get behind the idea of the whole thing just existing for the sake of existing

Like, the .mp3 programs only function as .mp3 programs so that other programs can listen to their music

I walked out after the nightclub scene. Mostly because the 3D glasses were giving me a headache and I had 3 idiots running their mouths behind me the whole damn movie, but the gay nightclub owner program was stupid. I'll redbox it like 9 months from now and fast forward just to see the end.
