I just wanted to pop in and see if anybody knows of a way to get my mom a Mixi account without access to a Japanese cell phone e-mail address. She's a native born Japanese that now lives in Central America and she's having a hard time adjusting. Problem is she's been living out of the country for so long that she doesn't know many people there anymore.
I figured it was kind of a long shot, but I was wondering if there's anybody around that has access to the service and/or knows of a way to get around the protections they have in place and get her an account.
Mixi is basically Facebook for Japanese people, but they are restrictive on who can sign up. My research suggests that it used to be that you could get in with an .edu address, but that method has since been disabled. (I've tried it with a couple of .edu's).

Not the "getting around protections" part. We don't do that here and anyone who decides to try to advise on it anyway will have problems.
Anything else is fine, though.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Apologies. By getting around the system I meant if there's anybody who knows a legitimate way to obtain a Japanese cell phone e-mail address without necessarily having a Japanese cell phone or having one but cheaply.
I know there are companies in the US that provide Japanese cell phones (and service), but that's the US, and she lives south of the border currently. Also, I'm not 100 percent sure that they provide an address that Mixi will accept. I am wondering if anybody has experience with that service and if there are cheap ways to get a phone and or contract with them.
For example, there was one such store that I remember, when I used to live near The City. Now, not so much, I'd have to go up to Chicago to check it out.

Sorry I don't have any better news to tell you.
