So I'm trying to find a suitable indie pack to gift, but I need games that:

    1. aren't timed or are timed very generously (at least for the most part)
    2. don't really have any sort of story or plot to understand the game
    3. rely almost exclusively on the mouse for control
    4. (optional) can be paused (or left alone for indefinite periods) at will

I'm going for a pong-like level of simplicity here. Something similar to Bejeweled 2 (...but not Puzzle Quest which is too complex or has too much superfluous stuff) or Zuma (although probably not quite as hectic). Hopefully I'm not relegated to Zen of Sudoku.

So...any ideas? Even if just 1 or 2 games out of the pack meets the criteria (or possibly if it's not even in a pack).

    Maybe Galcon?

Galcon looks interesting, but I fear it may appear to complex in this case (yes, even though it looks like it's just lots of clicking on circles to have your triangles attack).

You may want to give Osmos a shot. It's not like Bejeweled or Zuma as you aren't matching pieces. It's a very chilled out game where you propel a "bubble" around to merge with other bubbles. So long as you are bigger than the bubble you are merging with, you're fine, but if you're smaller, you lose. The very act of propelling, though, makes you smaller. It's entirely mouse controlled.

The game has three basic play modes, only one of which features "enemies" that act outside the physics you instigate yourself.

    Check it out on youtube.

What's with Darksiders binding things to Capslock? The fuck is that shit?

The jury's still out on it, since I've not made it too far, the combat is horrible, and I can only kill the zombies without dying. Everything else pretty much is slaughtering me, or something.

I blame the shitty port, myself. Seriously. Capslock.

I actually have nothing but good things to say about Darksiders on the PC. But I've been using a 360 pad, so crazy key bindings don't apply to me.

If I woulda known that another piece of hardware would be necessary to enjoy the game thoroughly, I would have probably reconsidered.

I mean, I knew going into IL-2 that I was going to need a joystick. Like, I don't even understand how that game is playable in the slightest way without it. It's the same thing. I'm not understanding how this game is really playable unless you use the default configuration.

Hah, I don't have my joystick yet but I started IL-2. Just about all I can do is read about WW2-era hardware because I don't think I have the finger dexterity or memory to bother learning to fly with a keyboard when you can crash on the runway if your flaps are wrong or you don't correct for propeller torque with your ailerons.

At least my stick is do in a week and then I can shoot down some dirty Fascists/Communists/Capitalists/Finnish.

They are all stand alone. There is a nod to the first game in Armored Princess in the first few moments of the game. Haven't had the time to finish it and get started on crossworlds personally to find out if it is the same.

So The Witcher keeps sending me off on these quests inside caves and sewers and whatnot and I'm not sure how many of you know this but it is dark inside the ground and I can't see shit. And apparently I need either a Cat potion or a torch, and I have stuff that contains all of the ingredients I need for the potion but apparently I can't actually make it because I need to acquire alchemy equipment, and I've seen a total of one torch I could pick up in the entire game so far and OF COURSE I didn't pick it up.

I'm this close to heading back into the crypt and fighting all the ghouls blind with my enhanced Witcher senses, Daredevil-style.

You can't actually get out of the prologue of The Witcher without successfully making a potion, where clearly no apparatus is involved. Didn't the game walk you through the process?

I admit it's not entirely straightforward (different strengths and qualities of alcohol, ingredients having both a primary and a secondary characteristic) but you should at least have the basics down after helping Triss.

Those of you new to Witchering should know that alchemy rocks like a bomb dropping from way up.

Also keep an eye out for books and read anything you can. You never know what you'll learn.

The biggest barrier to The Witcher besides the quirky combat is the general oddness of some of its basic systems. It's not so much an RPG but a Geralt Simulator. Once you realize that Geralt is all about being awesome, then it's ok.

The game itself is not necessarily bugged. Based on personal experience, that's a sound card issue. Are you using onboard motherboard sound? I had that exact issue in both Oblivion and Mount & Blade. Sticking a cheapo sound card in to take the load off the mobo cleared that right up for me
