I'd be a liar if I said that I didn't buy PSO just for the SA2 demo.
Hah, I remember when that video premiered. There was no sign of Tails, we had no clue about Shadow or Rouge, and there was hot debate how Dr. Eggman would play, or if he even was playable.
Yes I used to bum around on Sonic the Hedgehog Message boards in the late 90s early 2000s.
Speaking of, I have the Japanese birthday bundle but not a US copy of the game (loaned it out to a friend years ago and haven't gotten it back) I should really pick up another copy one of these days.
Edit: Oh fuck, you guys remember the DLC for Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2?
Edit 2: Now I just remembered the rudimentary online chat that SA had. That shit was cool, though useless without a keyboard (Which I didn't pick up until mid-2001)

They need more stuff like that today, I love that stuff. Hearing about it, anyway; sadly, I wasn't connected to... SEGANet, was it? ...when I finally got my Dreamcast. And SA2 I got for GameCube.
...and good lord, were Rouge's... no, nevermind. I don't want to think about it.

Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Sonic 1- Green Hill Zone
Sonic 2- Chemical Plant Zone
Sonic 3- Ice Cap Zone
Sonic & Knuckles- Sky Sanctuary
Sonic CD- Stardust Speedway Zone
Sonic Adventure- Final Egg
Sonic Adventure 2- City Escape
Sonic Heroes- Casino Park Zone
Sonic 06- Crisis City
Sonic Unleashed- Dragon Road
Sonic Colors- Asteroid Coaster
that makes for 11 zones, plus a final zone. And it appears it will indeed cover the entire span of Sonic's career if this holds true. Also, other classic characters are back, namely classic Amy, which is the only which has been seen so far.
EDIT: my only complaint? No
Hydrocity zone or flying battery zone?
That's weak. I hope that part of what I've heard isn't true.
EDIT again: the only part of that list, btw, that I'm comfortable 100% confirming is
Chemical Plant Zone and City Escape
, because
I've already seen the model for Grabber from CPZ, and Crush 40 confirmed they re-recorded the city escape theme
. Oh, and obviously Green Hill Zone, too. Also, I guess I can confirm that
Sonic CD
will be represented, due to classic amy being in this game.
Sonic 1- Green Hill Zone
Sonic 2- Chemical Plant Zone
Sonic 3- Ice Cap Zone

Darn, not the best selection.
Sonic 1- Green Hill Zone
The obvious choice.
Sonic 2- Chemical Plant Zone
I would've preferred any other level to this one. Hill Top Zone? Oil Ocean? Metropolis? Wing Fortress?
Sonic 3- Ice Cap Zone
I'm not a huge fan of any of the Sonic 3 levels, and Ice Cap is a better choice than Carnival Night and Launch Base, but I'd much rather see Marble Garden, Hydrocity, or even Angel Island.
Sonic & Knuckles- Sky Sanctuary
Well, aside from that infuriating Sandopolis Zone Act 2, every level in S&K would be a great choice. Still I would have much preferred Mushroom Hill. Still, not a bad choice.
Sonic CD- Stardust Speedway Zone
The obvious choice.
Sonic Adventure- Final Egg
I would've preferred almost any other level to this one. Aside from the boss fight against the Egg Viper, there's nothing particularly memorable about this level. It really should have been Lost World.
Sonic Adventure 2- City Escape
The obvious choice. Looking forward to rolling around at the speed of sound, again.
Sonic Heroes- Really
Sonic 06- Do
Sonic Unleashed- Not
Sonic Colors- Care
another cool tidbit - they're drawing new "classic sonic" artwork in the style of the old game packaging. I.E. this style:
The stuff they're creating for this game, in this style, looks straight out of 1993. Whoever is directing the art for the classic sonic portion of this game is outstanding.
Also, several versions of characters will be available, as it appears there are two versions of tails and knuckles (classic and modern). It seems like you'll meet a character from every game sonic appeared in, in each appropriate zone:
Tails in Chemical Plant Zone
Knuckles in Ice Cap Zone
Amy and Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway
Big in Final Egg
Shadow in City Escape
Modern Tails and Modern Knuckles in Casino Park
Silver in Crisis City
Werehog Sonic in Dragon Road
I guess each zone is loosely based on the story from the original games, encapsulated into one zone or something.
I like the concept, but having only ONE stage each from S1-3,S&K and CD would be maddening. That's the golden age of Sonic right there, and the games with the most iconic levels and music.
And seriously, does Sonic Heroes really need revisiting? I'd much prefer Sonic 2's Casino Night Zone, if only for the music.
Sonic Adventure- Final Egg
I would've preferred almost any other level to this one. Aside from the boss fight against the Egg Viper, there's nothing particularly memorable about this level. It really should have been Lost World.
I can see why they chose the stages they did if this ends up being the finalized list of stages we get. It pretty much covers every level theme we've seen in the whole series, with the exclusion of a water level (though maybe they consider Chemical Plant to cover that?) and some of the more bizarre outliers like Sonic Colors' food themed world. I do hope we get a few more stages in the mix from certain games but I'd probably be satisfied even if we didn't. Also curious is that there's no Sonic 4 stage in that list though I can probably think of a reason why that'd be.
I'm wondering if, on top of all the classic levels, Sonic Generations will have one level completely unique to itself. I can see them doing that for the final level of the game.
I'm wondering if, on top of all the classic levels, Sonic Generations will have one level completely unique to itself. I can see them doing that for the final level of the game.
Maybe they'll do a long level like the final level of Unleashed that goes through all kinds of different things from all the games? That'd be interesting to see...
I can't begin to say how much of a snub it'll be if Sonic 2006 gets a stage and Sonic 4 doesn't.
If there's one level that deserves to be remade from 2006, its crisis city. Buried under all the shit was a great concept for a stage. Street levels always, ALWAYS are the best zone in every Sonic game.
Aw. I was really hoping for Hydrocity. It's my favorite out of all the ruins-themed levels, which is probably my favorite level theme in Sonic. What are the chances that they'll add a few more levels as DLC?
Final Egg strikes me as a weird choice. Even watching someone play it on youtube, I barely remember the level at all.
I also had a lapse of sanity today and grabbed an issue of the Sonic comic. Since I plan on picking up the "Genesis" reboot arc, I wanted to have some idea what was going on beforehand.
Yeah, Casino Park Zone has my favorite music in Sonic Heroes. Well, it and the chaos emerald special stages. It'll be awesome to hear it remade genesis-style.
Speaking of which, I wonder which special stages will be in the game.

Hurts to watch
Best music in the game, too. I'd like to see this stage done, you know, right.
It's been a long time since I last saw Sonic 2k6.
8-20 second mid-level loads... awkward transitions from one part to the next... abrupt camera flips... "action shots" while you're still controlling movement... slow-ass boarding section that might have well just been Sonic running... absurdly extended hitboxes and terrain clipping... "That tornado is carrying a car!"
Level looks good, though. With the new engine I can see a stage like that being tolerable, but Sonic Team's still got their work cut out for 'em.

but at it's core, the concept for the zone is awesome. It's a mix of the street level cliche, and the fire level cliche. I'm imagining stardust speedway with lava traps from Lava Reef Zone. Which would be incredible.
I'd love to see how they do that zone in Classic Sonic style.

I've always thought they should have a stage with lots of floating platforms like that segment in Chaos City. Although I didn't know that particular segment existed because, y'know, Sonic 2k6. Hopefully they'll also do something like that in the Modern Sonic version of
Sky Sanctuary
.
For the level selections, I'm sort of disappointed that we aren't getting Lava Reef or Quartz Quadrant. LR was one of the best zones in S&K, and QQ was easily one of the most fun zones to just run around in in Sonic CD. Stardust Speedway was alright, and it did have that iconic race in it (which is probably why it was chosen), but most of the zone was too claustrophobic and confusing for my taste.

Seems ruins should come sooner, but then, Sky Sanctuary was the penultimate level of its game (barring Doomsday, of course), so...
Sky Sanctuary is a good choice. But I'd have preferred Lava Reef. The change from fire to ice was pretty cool. And the whole Death Egg in the crater of the volcano vista was pretty mindblowing when I first played it.

Fire to ice? I always thought that was just ash and crystals formed from the heat of the lava.
Even though it would never happen, I'd love to see a traditional level based on Toxic Caves or Lava Powerhouse.
You do know that Toxic Caves Zone is built out of pieces of the old scrapped Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic 2, right?
I knew the Background was taken from HPZ and modified with pipes, but is there anything else? Despite that, HPZ is hardly "Toxic Caves: The Non-Pinball Level." :P
I don't get it. The Saturn version is so much less catchy and Sonicy than the Genesis version. The sound quality is better, but the music itself is way weaker.

I'm probably biased since I grew up with the Saturn soundtrack, but Rusty Ruin Act 1 has always been one of my favorite Sonic songs.
Between the Steam and PSN versions of Sonic Adventure, are they pretty much the same? Does the PSN port have any major technical problems that weren't present in the original version of SA:DX?
I know that the PSN version lacks the GameGear stuff, but what about the Steam version? How's the Gamepad support?

Problem with that is that Green Hill, Casino Park, Sky Sanctuary, and Final Egg would probably make 4/5 of the stages from that game redundant.
I guess that would leave Mad Gear...
That was such a great race. Then Sonic vs. Shadow at the end of SA2 took over as my favorite for me...
Be cool if this took back the crown. I mean, I found Sonic vs. Shadow more fun somehow, but the setting was rather bland by comparison.
I like the news about all the characters... I do hope some/most/all will be playable...
