Installing xp

I downloaded xp off thepiratebay, trying to install it on my netbook. I have a legitimate key but I don't have a cd drive so I am using a usb drive method from here.

http://liliputing.com/2008/04/install-windows-xp-on-mini-note-usb.html

I am trying to specify the path in step 12 but no matter what I select is the wrong path, any ideas?

Your copy from TPB is likely not a legit copy of the Windows disc and thus it's being rejected by the program. Borrow a real Windows disc.

I don't have one, only windows 7, and I don't think that is the problem since it is telling me there are no windows files in the path.

I got it with a different copy, thanks though.

Well I got to step 15 and nothing happened, not sure why.

It reccomended starting over, so I did and I get to step 4 and the USB is not detected, so I try step 3 with admin mode and the program doesn't open, any ideas?

Now I tried again and I don't see an option to boot, I am using windows 7.

    http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm

Tried this method as well, still won't boot from USB.

    EDIT

Figured out you have to hold esc, select USB, then it says BOOTMGR missing. Why?

    EDIT
I searched for bootmgr, copied it onto the drive and now I am getting an error for not having boot\bcd

    EDIT

I magiced up an xp cd, installed it to my USB drive on another computer and it still gave me the boot\bcd error. After 12 hours I am about to call it quits and spend $50 on an external cd drive. Unless someone here has any idea, this seems like it won't work.

Your problem is that Windows, nor your BIOS, is detecting your USB flash drive as a bootable disk. There's honestly nothing you can do about this. And no, it doesn't matter if your copy of Windows is legit or not, or whether someone tells you to go "borrow" a legit CD, it's not the same. Borrowing that CD is against the terms of use. Ever read the top of a Windows CD? "Do not make illegal copies or lend this CD". I'm looking at one right now.

    So here's your options.

Find and download the Ultimate Boot CD. It's basically a mobile operating system. Within that, you can copy the install files over to the hard drive and start the installation. Within the installation, you can set up your partitions.

Second Option: Network Installation. It's possible, and Windows XP supports it. I've never done it before, because I have a "legit" copy of Vista x64 that I use. I have the install files on my hard drive, and Windows has its own partition.

I got the USB to be detected I just can't get the boot\bcd fix.

    EDIT:
I attempted to use EasyBCD, I don't think it did anything at all since I get the same error.

Well I figured everything out, bought an external CD drive, borrowed an xp CD...and I still can't get it to work. It kept crashing on Load Windows after cd boot, on a blue screen. I got a new disc that wasn't quite as scratched and that one fails to find a HDD installed, which it clearly is since I can boot. Every step of the way something goes wrong, this is fucking insane. I am ready to just buy a new netbook.

Most likely XP doesn't have drivers for your SATA chipset. Add them to the XP install cd with this.

How do I use that to put the files on the disc?

Conversly depending on your hardware your bios will have a specific setting for HDD device configuration, you should be able to change settings on there to something like IDE, or disable SATA native mode. That will also get around the problem with the XP disk.

What do I need to change? There are options but I am not sure why I would need to change it since it can't detect the HDD, it isn't set to IDE right now though. I mean if Win 7 works it is obviously detecting the HDD.

XP install disc does not recognize SATA controllers (unless you do F6 and provide the drivers during setup), while Vista/7 install discs natively support SATA controllers.

In the bios there should be a setting that allows the controller to be put into IDE or COMPATIBILITY mode in which the controller presents as an IDE device. The default setting might be SATA or AHCI or somesuch. If you can point me to your netbook's manual I can tell you which setting to change.

Windows 7 has the SATA drivers on the disk, Windows XP does not. Thus xp does not see your disk.

As pointed out above your options are:

During setup F6 and provide the drives required.

Get the required drivers embedded into the xp disk.

Or if your motherboard supports the an IDE configuration roll back use that.

Without providing the drivers you will not be able to see the disk in XP.

This guide seems fairly easy. Just substitute with your own drivers:

I tried to follow that guide, my CD does not have the same folder names and I get errors when I try and just select the other folder. I am giving up on this option, I am going to try the network install and if that doesn't work I am just throwing this netbook in the garbage.

What do you need to do with the netbook. If your using it for websurfing checking email, Ubuntu would be better than throwing in the the garbage.

Yeah I tried ubuntu, couldn't get all the drivers working for the touchpad, wan and lan and sound, it might work with updated kernals now though.

I also would like to play some indie games on it, but they run so poorly and the screen resolution is so weird most games don't display right.

UPDATE: i am trying to do a network install on fizbans computer now. I am using tftpboot32 to do this. I can get his computer to boot from the network and enter into command prompt. However whenever I try to do a net use and mount my drive on his computer it says path isn't found. I can't ping my computer or anything from his netbook. Other computers can ping mine and I can't seem to change many ethernet options as I only have the basic command prompt. Anyone have any ideas?

I also forwarded ports 67-69 in the router.
