CoH Question

This might be a long shot since this isn't the Company of Heroes/Steam forums or anything, but I figured I'd ask here anyway.

I recently bought the Company of Heroes Gold Pack or whatever during the Steam holiday sale. It installed OK and I was able to crank it up and reach the game's menu, where I was prompted to create a player profile. Apparently I can't even play single player without being connected to Relic's online servers. After creating one I clicked 'use this profile', whereupon a message told me I was logging in. That's when the game crashed. That's where it has crashed every time since. "RelicCOH has stopped working"

I've been unable to find any answers with Google. It's been suggested that I verify the game's cache, which I've done several times to no avail.

I use windows Vista 64-bit SP2 with 4gigs of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo processesor. Video card is a GeForce GTX 465 with up-to-date drivers.

The game's demo ran fine.

Any ideas?

That's pretty odd. I seem to recall there might be a "play offline" button somewhere on the login screen. Try that.

I don't see any options besides "log in or go home". But attempting to log in crashes the game.

There's also a message at the upper right-hand side of the screen that says"you are online".

If I'm already online, why do I need to log in?

    It's madness!

Actually, now that I think about it, I probably am logged in but the game crashes when I try to load a profile. Sorry for mis-stating the problem.

Damn, damn.... I am SURE I had this problem with CoH after a steam install.

I just can't remember how I fixed it....

Have you looked on the official relic forums? My addled brain tells me it might have been something to do with running 64bit. I think I might have had to change the settings on the steam CoH executable to run in 32 bit compatibility or something similar to that.

I was also having graphics problems, which may have been related.

Once I get home I'll check out my installation and see if I can remember what was going wrong

EDIT - try setting texture detail to HIGH if it isn't already. I'm pretty sure this is the problem I was seeing - refer to http://planetcoh.gamespy.com/pagetools/pagetools.php?act=printnews&id=114616

I'm running almost the exact same setup with no issues... CoH has an ass-load of patches, maybe one of them messed up; check the file integrity on steam.

    Found a fix for it.

Apparently it had something to do with NVidia's Network Manager. Seems to be working fine now.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate the help.
