I just noticed there's a bug grass that evolves into a Hikikomori, but that Hikikomori then evolves into one of this game's Lopunny (although the pure grass White Exclusive is more Lopunny-ish). And the Japanese name for the evolved pokemon? Hahakomori. Real subtle there, Nintendo.
Edit: Also -- it's not a bad pokemon. 490 stats, highest is physical attack. It's type sucks, though -- Bug/Grass is weak to a lot of stuff.
I got to Goldenrod City the other day and started trying to play the Voltorb Flip game in the game corner. I must not understand a core element of this game cause my loss percentage is extremely high. Like probably about 90% chances of exploding.
I know its just minesweeper. But for some reason I always get screwed. Like I'll start by revealing all the rows with 0 bombs. Then I'll start revealing squares with a lower chance of having a bomb. Like a row/column which is 1x1. But it seems like this always just results in me getting unlucky and getting blown up by a square that only has a like a 25% chance of being the one with the bomb. Or something. I just don't get it.
yo so 3 questions.
1. does Black come with a pokewalker.
2. did they fix acid rain.
3. any reports as to the grind? heart gold is so fuckin grindy it may be the first Pokemon game I don't finish.
There is no Pokewalker. Which is very disappointing for me because I felt that the Pokewalker added a lot. Not to the game, but to the culture. It was great to meet other Pokemon fans with it.
I am not sure about acid rain, though I would be willing to bet it is fixed, and I heard that EXP works differently now so the grind should be more tolerable.

One thing that helps me is the knowledge that any row/column where the numbers at the end equal 5 when added together aren't worth touching. In those cases, any card that doesn't have a Voltorb on it will have a 1, which doesn't add to your point total anyway so no point in flipping any of those cards.

Your problem is that this isn't set up like minesweeper at all. This is a math game and it has everything to do with the numbers on the side. The top number in a side box is the number of points in the row, the bottom number is how many bombs there are.
So a box with a 4 on top and a 1 on the bottom means that row has four 1 point cards and one bomb. That makes the row worthless to you since the point is to find 2's and 3's, don't even open anything. This applies to any row that equals 5 between bombs and points. 4 and 1, 3 and 2, etc. What I do is open all rows with 0 bombs, then memo the rows that equal 5. Then look at your exposed cards from zero rows and columns. Can you eliminate other rows mathematically, usually you can do this with at least one row. An example would be a row that is a 6 and 1. I have already exposed a 3 in that row. This means to fill the row as pictured everything else is a bomb or a 1, you can memo the rest of the row for ignoring.
After that I start looking at the high value rows.
Sometimes you have to just guess, but not that often.

So I'm playing Soul Silver and just barely got through the Elite 4. Where is a good place to lvl up my current team? (they are between lvls 41-49) Also, I think my team is lacking speed and a pain-in-the-ass status effect type. My first attempt at the Elite Four saw my team get decimated by a Muck with minimize and toxic.
My team is currently
Arcanine lvl 49 with Flamethrower, Iron Tail, Reversal and Fire Fang
Ampharos lvl 48 with Strength, Light Screen, Discharge and Thunderpunch
Ursaring lvl 44 with Hyper Beam, Faint Attack, Scary Face and Slash
Gyrados lvl 44 with Surf, Dragon Dance, Avalance and Hydro Pump
Typhlosion lvl 43 with Blast Burn, Flamethrower, Swift and Lava Plume
Machamp lvl 41 with Submission, Revenge, Earthquake and Cross Chop
My "bench" is
Rapidash lvl 43 with Fire Blast, Stomp, Agility and Sunny Day
Nidoking lvl 32 with Poison Sting, Fury Attack, Shadow Ball and Shadow Claw
Lugia lvl 45 with Extrasensory, Blizzard, Hydro Pump and Aeroblast
Magmar lvl 30 with Faint Attack, Fire Spin, Confuse Ray and Fire Punch
I like fire types and think using the Lugia is kind of cheap. I have a couple Eeeves I could evolve as well.

Would training one of my Eevees from lvl 1 and eventually have it evolve into Espeon (? I forget the psychic evolved form's name) be worth my time or is there a faster, better pokemon that I could nab easily? As you might be able to tell it's been a while since I've played the series. The last one I played was the original Pokemon Silver actually.

Getting an Espeon will take a little work, and I'm pretty sure it's more of a defensive pokemon (but it still looks cool). You can probably just put Psychic on something you already have, too.
edit: ERRR Umbreon's the defensive one, nevermind! Espeon is sounding better and better!
I might actually have to choose the Grass starter this time.
That image there is a fake: it's fan created from the time between when the Zoroark line was the only B/W pokemon that were revealed and the time when the game-specific Legendaries were revealed.
So there's no new Zangoose-related pokemon, but lucky you that both games have Zangoose in it, you just need to beat the game first to get access to any non-B/W pokemon.
I'm tempted to go with the Grass Starter this time. The Pig-Orc isn't doing it for me, and the Water-Samurai... well, actually, the Water-Samurai is kinda cool. But everyone knows, always go with the Fire Starter, cause the random not-starter Fire pokes suck.
Did they finally fix that in Gen 5?
Also: There are three Monkeys based on the "See/Hear/Speak No Evil" thing -- are they all available, or
are they like, a "backup starter"? I know you get one that's basically the opposite of your starter, or somesuch weirdness...
there's an entire Gym that's different based on what starter you pick. It's always super-effective against your starter.
Hm, I am seeing more fire pokes in the Gen5 dex than, say, Gen 1 (which was first starter, Ponyta, and... what, Magmar, maybe?). Still wondering what the three starters play out like.
Edit: Looks like the grass goes Pure-Grass Speed/Defensive, the fire ends up as a Fire/Fighting (what, again??) Physical/Mixed Sweeper, and the water is Pure-Water Mixed Sweeper? With the water one being slightly less specialized than the fire one?
Huh.

And Growlithe/Arcanine, Vulpix/Ninetales, Moltres, Flareon.
I'm still going to go for the flaming pig. Because it's a flaming pig. I may name him Bacon. Or Crackling.
Just got to the 4th Gym in HeartGold. The one in Ecruteak village. The guy with the ghost pokemon. I don't have any problems with him except his Gengar. Shadowball does way too much damage. Any suggestions for an early-game poke I can catch to tank this guy? I looked on the super effective chart and it says Steel or Dark type would take less damage from him. But I don't have a pokemon of that type available to me right now.
So I just got off the boat in SoulSilver after beating the Elite 4. It's probably time to really start thinking more about my team and catching Pokemon that I want to train for PAX East. First of all - where would be a good place to fight some higher level wild pokemon to use to level up? Second - are there any good sites/faqs on putting together a solid team?
There's a part of me that really wants to do a barnyard themed team - Sheep, Pig, Horse, Bull, Cow, Chicken - but I realize that would likely be a quick way to get my butt handed to me. Any tips or links folks can share?

Smogen has tons of great information on Pokémon builds, team strats, training stuff etc. Serebii's Game Mechanics is also good for learning how to raise beasties properly.
Entei is fucking awesome, and as XoB said, Flare Blitz and ExtremeSpeed add a lot of awesomeness to its arsenal. Though Close Combat and being able to choose between Adamant, Jolly, Naughty and whatever nature you want is hard to say not to.
Arcanine boasts similar stats, Flare Blitz and Extremespeed, better abilities and doesn't look like a complete ninny.
Honestly, I have never even seen Entei before in an online match. I remember calm mind/sub Raikou and 'no weak' Suicune wrecked my teams in Gen 3 singlehandedly, but Entei was forever in the shadow of Arcanine.

This is the one you probably want to spend time getting good IVs on.
We need one of these event dogs to get one of the B/W legendaries, don't we?
This one is pretty close to usable, yeah.
Of course a Gen Five Arcanine blows him out of the water and is much easier to get....
Yes, you only need one of the shiny dogs to unlock the event. If you were only to get one and intended to use it, I'd go for Entei.
