NEW YORK (AP) -- "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, who strips for his new role in London's West End revival of the play "Equus," has ignited a bit of a media firestorm by posing for racy promotional photos for the production.

The Tony-Award-winning drama tells the story of a stable-hand who has an erotic fixation with horses. In one photo, Radcliffe, 17, dares to bare it all alongside a white horse; in another, he is pictured with a naked Joanna Christie, the actress who portrays his girlfriend.

"Equus," directed by Thea Sharrock, opens at London's Gielgud Theater on February 27. Tony Award-winning actor Richard Griffiths plays a pyschiatrist who treats Radcliffe's character.

"Part of me wants to shake up people's perception of me, just shove me in a blender," Radcliffe said in a recent interview with Newsweek magazine.

"It's a really challenging play, and if I can pull it off -- we don't know if I can yet -- I hope people will stop and think, 'Maybe he can do something other than Harry,' " he said.

Radcliffe, who was discovered seven years ago in the audience of a London theater, reprises his role as the bespectacled boy wizard in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," slated for release July 13.

So is he now trying to ruin America's children ....showing pictures of his wand...for shame!

Who thinks there will be a tremendous outcry about this in about 30 to 40 seconds?

No, I am not really communist. Yes, it is weird that I use this name.

I think it's smart of him to try to break out of his typecasting prior to the end of his run as Harry.

As far as outcry, I think the sort of people who are going to be that upset by it are the sort who already think that Harry Potter is the devil and teaches kids to use dark magicks.

I think anyone who'll be upset by his posing naked will probably be more upset about him appearing as a character with a sexual attraction to horses.

Good for him, breaking out of his typecast as the boy wizard. That could destroy a career.

However, changing over the being stereotyped as a horsefucker may not be the best approach.

This made me chuckle. But really, it isn't funny...a lot of actors get horribly typecast by things like this and never escape.

I too was disappointed to find out that it wasn't Emma Watson we were talking about. Then I remembered that she's like 16 and felt dirty.

Meh, don't really care or anything. Picture I saw wasn't too distastefull, and if it was a chick doing the same sort of thing, I doubt many folks would have a problem with it if he was a chick, unless it actually showed naughty bits.

Not being a great big Potter fan, I don't care what the actor does. Hopefully he'll get to live a fulfilling career and escape the boy wizard stereotype. I kind of see this in the same light as when I saw Elijah Wood go from Frodo Baggins to Kevin the cannibal in Sin City.

Whatever Radcliffe does after his role as a horse-fucker will be the one to define the course of his career I think.

Elijah Wood wasn't in nearly as much danger as Radcliffe, though...he already had a ton of roles before Lord of the Rings, and while not particularly diverse (he was a kid in most/all of them) he was still "Elijah Wood" when I saw him in LotR, not "that guy from LotR."

For comparison, go over to imdb.com and look at what Radcliffe had/has done outside Harry Potter.....yeah. He was fucked if he didn't do something drastic.

Good point, but I had always seen Wood as being cast as a gentile character and the murderous, silent cannibal was a different type of role.

Radcliffe was definitely in more danger though, I agree. Like I said, let's see what he does next. He might have to do the Haley Joel Osment thing and be a voice actor or he could take to the stage for a while longer too.

Definitely. But while the kind of character he played didn't vary much, it was as least a "normal" character...not a terribly difficult typecast to break, and not a horrible one to work around if you don't. You can make an entire career out of playing a certain type of character, provided it isn't too small of a niche.

With Radcliffe, however, he was (and possibly still is) going to be branded forever specifically as Harry Potter. His entire time in the spotlight has been spent as a single, and very memorable/unique, character.

I mean, compared to him most ex-Star Trek actors have it easy...and how many of them have gone on to do anything significant aside from Star Trek?

cuz he's a skinny-ass underage (in the US) movie mega star who acts in a movie franchise directed towards children.

and now he's gettin' nekkid and all the little kids are gonna go "mommy, why is harry potter getting his junk out and showing it to a horse?"

i personally don't acre; it's not like it's a movie, where kids will sneak in to see it just because he's in it. it's a long boring stage play which kids won't probably care about because it's a long boring stage play. the part that annoys me is that he's only doing this to get some street cred, which is fine, but it's just so obvious and fake.

Really? That's pretty cool. I've noticed him in quite a few films in the US, too...though I think a lot were either pre-TNG or during it. Stuff like Far and Away, Last of the Mohicans, or The Commitments. Basically bit/supporting parts as "guy with Irish accent." He seems like a pretty decent actor, though.
Jonathan Frakes does crappy shows on SciFi

Don't forget Roswell...producer, director, and played his washed-up ex-Star-Trek star self. On the other hand, maybe it's better to forget Roswell.
and Nimoy does a lot of narrative things for history-ish shows.

Patrick Stewart has done a lot of good voice work, too...and even a couple non-X-Men film roles.

Looking at it, though, I think the Shat's current success on Boston Legal is about the the most success as any Star Trek alum has seen after their roles, and probably more success than the rest of them have seen combined.
In retrospect I see what you mean.

I know. You'd have to pay me enough to live on for the rest of my life to get me to do a major part in Star Trek. 'Cause after that all you've got is conventions.
