NEW YORK (AP) -- "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, who strips for his new role in London's West End revival of the play "Equus," has ignited a bit of a media firestorm by posing for racy promotional photos for the production.
The Tony-Award-winning drama tells the story of a stable-hand who has an erotic fixation with horses. In one photo, Radcliffe, 17, dares to bare it all alongside a white horse; in another, he is pictured with a naked Joanna Christie, the actress who portrays his girlfriend.
"Equus," directed by Thea Sharrock, opens at London's Gielgud Theater on February 27. Tony Award-winning actor Richard Griffiths plays a pyschiatrist who treats Radcliffe's character.
"Part of me wants to shake up people's perception of me, just shove me in a blender," Radcliffe said in a recent interview with Newsweek magazine.
"It's a really challenging play, and if I can pull it off -- we don't know if I can yet -- I hope people will stop and think, 'Maybe he can do something other than Harry,' " he said.
Radcliffe, who was discovered seven years ago in the audience of a London theater, reprises his role as the bespectacled boy wizard in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," slated for release July 13.

As far as outcry, I think the sort of people who are going to be that upset by it are the sort who already think that Harry Potter is the devil and teaches kids to use dark magicks.

I can see how Radcliffe may want to get away from the typecast, but why do nude promotional photos? Couldn't he be clothed in these and the idea behind him shafting ponies be just as effective?

Meh, don't really care or anything. Picture I saw wasn't too distastefull, and if it was a chick doing the same sort of thing, I doubt many folks would have a problem with it if he was a chick, unless it actually showed naughty bits.

Radcliffe was definitely in more danger though, I agree. Like I said, let's see what he does next. He might have to do the Haley Joel Osment thing and be a voice actor or he could take to the stage for a while longer too.
Well Colm Meaney(O'brian) actually seems to do a decent amount of acting in films in the UK.
Jonathan Frakes does crappy shows on SciFi and Nimoy does a lot of narrative things for history-ish shows.

cuz he's a skinny-ass underage (in the US) movie mega star who acts in a movie franchise directed towards children.

i personally don't acre; it's not like it's a movie, where kids will sneak in to see it just because he's in it. it's a long boring stage play which kids won't probably care about because it's a long boring stage play. the part that annoys me is that he's only doing this to get some street cred, which is fine, but it's just so obvious and fake.
