Never played Ultima Online myself, but i always wanted to. Guess its time to give it a try
Yeah there's a pretty decent number of people playing with the guild that are new to it as well. You'll be in good company.
You'll have to let me know how that is. I love the game because it was my first, and because I loved the Ultima series of games. Showing some of the shrines to my friends, explaining the quest of the avatar, and so on was tons of fun when I played back during launch / T2A. I have no idea how it holds up without a decade worth of baggage and nostalgia.
Yeah I'm really interested to see newcomers' reactions. I don't think the graphics are what make UO/IPY a hard sell after more than a decade, it's the apparent learning curve. Trying to look up anything about UO online at this point leads to dizzying confusion about different eras and patches, but the reality is that a classic UO shard like IPY is going to be pretty straightforward once players are in the game playing.
And have a wiki to consult. I wish they'd put up the damn wiki.
The Second Age Wiki is a good resource, its not exactly the same as IPY but most of the mechanics discussed in it are relevant and mostly accurate.

It's going to be a little jarring for people who have gotten comfortable with the way things are now though in mmo gaming; in the first three minutes trying out Angel Island I was stalked by a guy attempting to search my pack something on the order of a hundred times.
I ignored him, after making sure he wasn't actually taking anything. It's just a tactic to try to get someone to attack you and flag themselves.

They should prolly have a link to the client/patch thing on the main site, the lack of those particular links might leave some folks in the dust.
I am hoping they have them up before launch at least a couple days.
It would also be nice to get a post on the ruleset before then. How will treasure chests work, special hits in or out, heal through poison and so on. Since, you know, that all determines how you should create your characters.
And it's not that great anyway. It looks passable, but it has weird slowdown and choppiness issues where it shouldn't have any, and both colors and some item models look kind of funky on it.

I need these people to PM me/Post who they are here or if you know them. We're not trying to play elitist, but I'm getting people registering on the forums and I'd like to know who people are.

If you're lurkers, that's cool. If you're new members, that's cool. If you're friends of a member, that's cool. I just don't want our starting plans outed so we get smashed into bits right out of the gate.
Wow, I guess I need to vanity search once in a while. I subscribed to this thread and made an account on the forums to keep an eye on everyone's involvement when this game opens up. I used to play on Angel Island with the PA crew, I was even a key holder for one of our first houses.
So lurker I am not, but absent of the forums lately and absent of mind always. Hope this clears everything up for you.

So, about 5-6 days for the server opening. The guild forums are probably going to be flowing with information here starting tonight. Things like picking our leaders, starting information all that jazz. So, if you're not registered do so now. If you are registered try and stop by the guild forums this evening.
The more the merrier dudes. Make sure to register on the guild forums and/or hop in vent. We're still trying to sort out what city to start, guild name, etc. We've got a pretty good group together.
So does anyone know if skills below a certain threshold don't contribute towards the daily cap? Is there a way to find out server specifics like this? I've been poking around the site and forums for info and haven't found out shit other than outlines for the new features.

I've heard that it's something up to around 60 that can be done without worrying about the cap.

Hey do you guys know if there are still rp servers out there? I am acquiring this game right now, and I will join this IPY if I have to, but I was wondering if any of you fuys know about any rp shards?

Well, for one there are no more daily caps. The IPY RoT is totally gone. In it's place is a "rested" bonus.
Every 23 hours the bonus timer resets and you gain super easy/fast for a while, then normal, then reduced. This is pretty similar to the original thing, but it looks different and so is easier to stomach.
But, no caps. Which is nice.
Edit: And sorry for being a big fat liar, I meant to post up some stuff on the guild forums last night, but my wife got into BSG on netflicks, and I passed out instead of posting.

Second age does regular events with a story line, but the server isn't really strictly RP.

You mean people play UO for reasons other than mass murder and constant dueling/PvP?
I refuse to believe this!
Yes, because if I only wanted those I'd fire up some Black Ops!

I'm going to RP with anyone who comes in kind. But I'm not going to get upset with people who aren't.
Is there any website that explains some of UO stuff to people that never played before? Feels kinda wierd going in blind, when most people already have plans set up

wait what for real? so macroing is still possible? or is the "reduced" gain so ridiculously slow that it may as well be a cap?

No one knows, or those that do are not saying. But, macroing is possible over night. Just don't expect to wake up to a ton of gains.

So they have the old power hour again with a later reduction, essentially?

This is how I'm interpreting it, yes.
Power hour, and if you macro it, it will drop off drastically but still technically isn't "capped."

Pretty much. From what I'm hearing though the reductions don't kick in until after 60 in that skill. For example, you decide to level a skill from 30-60, you should gain that at a normal rate. Later on when you start working on that 60 skill, you might gain 2 points at a sped up rate, then slow down to normal over the next two, then start reducing further for the next 2 points. This resets every 24 hours, from what I've heard.
They have "skill scrolls" in dungeons that you can find that will raise one of the skills you are using by .1 automatically, so even if you have been playing all day you can still earn skill points, if you are actively hunting and such.
So yeah, macroing will still be around, but they won't blast past people who actively play, since your damage dealing skills level at 200% the speed in dungeons, 50% (or less maybe?) in houses, and 100% in the wilderness.
Crafting skills go up at 200% in towns from what I've heard, and slow down in your own house.
This is all info I've gained from reading blogs/forums, so some of it may be outdated, or even just plain wrong.
this could be interesting, i played uo for exactly 5 minutes. My dad bought it for me as a gift one day, and I made an account, I asked him for his credit card number which made alarms go off for him, I got my 30 free days, but right after making my character my dad took it back to the store and got a refund(I am still amazed since I used the key)
maybe its time to give it another go

Thinking of making a crafter to start and eventually a thief or assassin.
Sounds good man, the more crafters the merrier. Hop in irc sometime.
