Today, on the worlds largest Toy Fair in Nürnberg, Germany (which I attended btw. :D), the Wii console and Wario Ware won the Toy Award in the Category Trend and Lifestyle:

Category: Trend + Lifestyle
Wii & Wario Ware: Smooth MovesTM
Nintendo of Europe GmbH

The new games console “Wii” is no longer controlled just with the buttons and controllers of a control unit connected to the console. To swing the virtual tennis racket here, you must swing back your arm and strike. An infrared interface converts the controller movement and controls the virtual players accordingly. The jury selected the “Wario Wear: Smooth MovesTM” game together with the console from Nintendo; here the player dances, boxes and jumps through 200 crazy microgames. Fast reactions and smooth movements are called for.

The jury chose the product because the play concept of Wii tends to encourage playing PC games in groups instead of alone. In addition, the product not only appeals to player types with an affinity to PCs, but also to new age groups – a real lifestyle theme. The innovative controller – for more fun and movement – and the “Wario WearTM: Smooth Moves” represents a return to the more classic games in the game console segment.

IMHO a great accomplishement considering video games are usually not shown at all there!
Even thought the Nintendo booth was rather small and hidden (again, no real category for videogames), there were quite a few people there. AFAIK it was Nintendos first appearance after a loooong while. They decided the Wii is "Toy" enought to again bring Nintendo to the Toy Fair. Now they even won an award! Congrats!

I choose to interpret that "PC" was a translational issue, and it would be better rendered "computer games" or "electronic games." *shrugs*

Nah, they just don't know what they are talking about. It's the same in german. Remeber, they are "toy people". They don't know much about electronics. But they abviously ment video games in general.

It technically is both personal and a computer, but it's really neither here nor there. We all knew what they meant. Cool deal at any rate.

It is in many ways a merger of all of Nintendo's previous concepts. The multi-function family oriented box being one of them now that they can have them consistently get online to share photos/get weather/get news.

The MSX, etc., a lot of people today don't realize these were made to be PCs at the time, but ended up being good for nothing but playing games, and we refer to stuff like the C64/Amiga/etc. solely as game systems now.

To that end, gaming has always driven "high end" PC development and sales even before 3D acceleration and anistropic filtering.

Just found it interesting that, while "focusing on games" this generation, Nintendo seems to have inadvertantly made this family box everyone is interested in after so many companies have failed when trying.
