So I'm looking to set up my PC for some MIDI fun but I'm having trouble figuring out what hardware I need to attain my goal. That goal being using one of my USB powered MIDI controllers (I have an akai LPK25, the similar akai drum controller, and a korg nanokey) to send MIDI signals to MIDI devices (who use the standard din5 connectors for their in/outs)

I'm assuming where the USB devices are simply controllers I'd need to use some software like reason or logic to handle the conversion from the USB controls to MIDI data, then I'd need a cable which would connect my computer to the other MIDI device(s)?

is this even possible? If so, is something like the m-audio UNO cable the thing I should be looking for?

I own Reason 5 and a simple MIDI controller connected to my PC using USB. I set up the controller in Reason and the MIDI data works just fine.

I believe you only need one MIDI device plugged into your PC (even if it is through USB or firewire): chain the devices together with help from this website.

Basically, use the MIDI thru's, outs, and ins of your various devices and you should be able to get them all working through one USB controller.

excellent. That website had pretty much confirmed all the info I needed. It would seem that the conceptual connection train goes as such: USB MIDI controller -> Software -> USB midi interface OUT -> target device IN -> SUCCESS

    thanks
