Trying to remember a book series i read as a teenager

I'm trying to recall a book series i read as a teenagers around late 80's early 90's.
it started off as a fantasy story but evolved into a sci-fi or a mix of the 2.
what i can remember it was about 3 books long (might be up to 5).
this group of heroes had to find these rings, but the rings were scattered across different planets. they had also discovered a long abandoned spaceship that was about 14 kilometers long that they converted into their traveling home. i remember the biggest section was converted into a garden or hydroponics or for food production.
I know that's pretty vague but i'm hoping someone here might remember it.
