Man, I ride my bike as much as possible when it's warm enough to do so but I couldn't deal with Alberta winters if I didn't have a car. No way am I waiting around for buses in this crap.
Yeah, this winter has been super rainy so far this year. Makes it really hard to justify going places when I know I'm going to show up soaking wet after riding over on my motorcycle. I drive out to the east end of the island after work once a month for my lodge meetings too and that can be chilly & rainy. Fuck that. With the new puppy in the house now, my wife was finally committed to getting her license so we're finally getting a car.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Right now it's -36˚C (yesterday it was -42˚C). Waiting for buses in those temperatures is kind of frustrating, especially when it's the weekend schedules.
Considering the driving lessons are now obligatory and that they cost $500 and that I live in an appartment with no parking spot... I'm in no hurry to drive a car. And I still have to overcome "the fear of the road". This is so stupid but yeah, it scares me to no end.
We don't have corvettes here. We're buying my cousin's Nissan March. It's in pretty good condition and we don't really need a big car. If we were allowed to have more than one car I'd probably get the new Camaro if I lived in North America or maybe an old Jag if I lived in Europe.
That is the first time I've ever heard of that car.

hey art chatters i have a question i will ask it here
i got a cheapish tablet thing a few weeks ago (a genius mousepen 8x6) thing. that it is cheap is not a big problem because i am not an artsy kind of person and i am bad at making art.
but i want to play around with it without buying photoshop. for whatever reason, it doesn't work with Gimp or other programs that use Gtk+ (like MyPaint for example). where it draws ends up being to the far left of the image regardless of where my cursor is. a bunch of looking into the topic suggests that there is no fix for this for windows users like myself.
so i was curious if anyone could suggest a (free) image editing software thing that isn't based on gtk (because those don't work) and that does recognize the pressure-sensitivity of my tablet-pen.
sorry for interrupting your chat with this borderline on-topic question!
So the gods of the hellish world that is retail management have not een very kind to me today. Anyone have any good retail horror stories to cheer me up with?

One time I worked at Old Navy, and being a selfish little bitch at the time, plus, an intense rage for every aspect of the job (except folding clothes, that wasn't to bad :P) I just left for my break and never came back...

Well, I had an ordeal with these people at the cable company here.
I just got a new TV and it's great. But I didn't have enough HD content for it. So, I decided to ditch my HBO package since I've been using Netflix and pick up the HD package. So I talk this very nice young lady on the phone and ask her to turn off/on the appropriate packages for me. She obliges without question. Then I say that I need to have my rented DVR replaced since it isn't an HD one. This is where the problems arise.
As it turns out, they haven't been handing out the non-HD DVRs for some time now. I was one of the few people that picked up the DVR package before they started handing out the HD version of the Explorer 8300. So, I explain this to the person on the other end of the phone. She responds with "It's the silver one, right? Yeah, if you have the silver box then it's HD. You need to plug in the HD connection to get the channels." In any case, since I was at work and couldn't see the box, I decided to wait until I get home so that I could look at the box directly and say with full confidence that it is not HD and would not carry an HD signal from the cable company. Silly me thinking that would work.
Once I got home and confirmed what I already knew, I called the cable company again. I explained to the person on the phone that I needed to have my box replaced since it was not HD capable. Of course, she disagreed with me. I had to explain to her that my HD channels weren't coming through and that my box was not HD capable again. And again. And again. Finally, I got frustrated and she decided that since my HD channels weren't working that she'd cancel my HD package so I wouldn't be billed. Great!
The next day, I proceeded to take my box into the cable company. I show it to another lady, who tries to tell me that my box is HD capable. I had to show her the connections on the back of the box and explain to her that non of them will provide a picture in HD quality. She then told me to go wait in another line that was specifically for cable box related issues. The guy at that window asked me what was up. I told him that I wanted to trade my box in for an HD one. He took a look and said that a technician is supposed to come out to my house to do it. I thought he was going to turn me away and send me home. I told him that I had a difficult time explaining my situation over the phone. He looked at me in a puzzled fashion and I continued to explain that the girls didn't believe me when I said that my box was no HD. He chuckled, sorted me out with an HD box and made sure that my HD channels were turned on and functioning for me. I've got HBO back on along with Showtime and TMC, too. I didn't ask for them to be turned on but as long as I'm not billed for them, I'm not going to say anything!
Whew! That's super helpful, I know exactly where I want to go if I need to replicate a professional client environment now. My career has been so far making independent comic books, so I'm giving the sequential art program a shot. I'd like to be able to use my coursework to produce new titles while I'm in school, by myself or as a writer for other students. I like filling in support roles with people, so I feel a large school like SCAD is going to have a lot of those opportunities for me. I like how there's an ability to stay on campus all day/night if I got to know the right people.
Which city did you live in? What was it like? How did the attitudes of your classmates change as you progressed through school?
Savannah is pretty huge, and there's a LOT of local housing available, so I lived in Savannah the whole time I was there. I think most people who attend SCAD do, as well. SCAD has no "official campus"...the buildings are just spread throughout the city. The main "cluster" of buildings are in the nicer area of Savannah, closer to the shops and restaurants and tourist-y areas. Having a car is FANTASTIC if you can have one with you there.
Savannah isn't the safest place at night to walk alone, if you're male or female, but it's a big city....and all the big cities around where I live have pretty much the same crime rates, and "rules" for going out at night. Savannah gets really busy from early spring to fall, from all the tourists. It's a lot of fun, and a very "active" city around that time, with busy nightlife and a few city-wide events. It's a beautiful city though, and great to take a walk around during the day.
I'm not sure what you mean by my classmates' "attitudes changing" as we progressed through school...I think they were essentially the same throughout. SCAD is a work school (as opposed to a "party school"), and the vast, vast majority of students work hard and want to be there. I only met a couple of people during my time at SCAD who didn't really take their work seriously. I was a transfer student, so I only spent three years there...but everybody seemed to feel the same way about the school, their work, and etc. from the time I started at SCAD, to when I left. The students are fun, social people, and it's a fantastic atmosphere for being creative. You are surrounded by people who understand the "art lingo" you're using, know the same programs as you, know what Micron pens are, what gouache is, etc. etc. etc.
If you're into filling in support roles for other people then yes, this would be great for you. There are a lot of ads around at SCAD (on the walls of SCAD buildings, in the classrooms, in the cafes, online, through word of mouth, etc) for people needing actors/film crew help/illustrators/animators/painters/webdesigners/models/study-buddies, and whatnot. They're trying to make opportunities for students to collaborate across the departments more, but it would probably just be easier for you to seek out ways to be involved in other student projects, and let that be known...or reply to the ads around the school and city.

I think it's testament to the quality of public transport in America that you can get by without a drivers licence until you're 30.
Getting by in Australia without a drivers licence, without being one of those jerks who is always ringing people up for a ride somewhere, is an almost impossibility.
I managed till 21, but I mooched my ass off in highschool and didn't really need a car in baltimore. DC still has the most pleasant public transport I've ever been on.
Some towns have good public transportation, some towns are really bike friendly, both of these things lead to being able to coast without having a license or a car far past the point where it should really be socially acceptable.
The new boss asked me if we have the tools to make a text only sign for a car. Why does he think that making a text only sign is somehow outside of the range of anyone with Word installed on their PC?
Also, when he asked me that, he snuck up on me. Thank God I wasnt at Penny Arcade reading a Girl Thread at HA. You guys, I really need to cut back on these boards.
everyone who disagrees can choke on my 3-dimensional cock.
Hows beating that 3-dimentional horse? :P
I've started listening to marc marons podcast. Unfortunately hes trying to make a pay system so you cant get to all of his back archives, but if you want to hear a really interesting interview with Ira Glass, http://wtfpod.libsyn.com/episode-117-ira-glass I recommend it.
Just to ramble further, I usually copy/past my references into PS and make a big tile sheet. Mostly so I can use Photoshop to control the zooming in and out of it, and then save it for later as artsnameREF.psd rather than sift through inpiration folders for the 8 things I was using for a particular work. This is all fine and good, but if I have PS open for an exuberant amount of time, I get lazy and start putting refs for multiple works into one file.. I'll then open a ref file for forest.psd and get roller coasters, multiple knives, a robotic bird, and like two forests, and i think to myself "what the fuck was I drawing?"
oh man
so
i rarely come into the forums anymore
i read H&A because it's entertaining, and i look in the AC doodle thread & some choice artist threads, because you guys are hells of talented and amazing
but i mean, i used to be a constant SE++er
i decide i should go back in, take a look
first thread i find
SUPER interesting first post
i go to last post, to join in what's sure to be an interesting conversation
Is the dimensionality deepening and enriching the quality of the horse beating? Cause I gotta be honest, the hollow thud of an argument hitting a hollow and rotting 3d corpse always kinda gave me headaches.

I'll probably end up taking the driving lessons and all that jazz before turning 30, but I'm not looking forward to it.
If I don't drive for a couple of days, I get antsy and want to drive.

Roller skates have 8 wheels so they are twice as fast as a car.
