Earlier on today, i came off my bike. i was doing 20-25 coming into a corner, put a touch too much brake on,(it was raining) and skidded along, falling onto my gear-shifter-thing.(terrible explanation i know)

The rise and fall is I cannot move past second gear now, the gear stick wont move any higher.(its a 1 down,4 up)

what could of happened to my bike guys? and what should I do?

I ate the entire cake. At one point, I remember becoming aware of the oppressive fullness building inside of me, but I kept eating out of a combination of spite and stubbornness. No one could tell me not to eat an entire cake - not my mom, not Santa, not God - no one. I would eat cake whenever I damn well pleased. It was my cake and everyone else could go fuck themselves.

Take it to a reputable bike repair shop? If you don't know much about repairs, nothing we tell you is going to help you fix it.

Good question (and rereading the speed, I'm leaning towards motorcycle now) but either way he needs to take it in.

Sounds like a motorcycle to me too, but who knows.

If you somehow jammed your gear shift take it to a shop to get it looked at. It doesn't sound like you're technically inclined and you probably don't have your bike's shop manual, so there's really nothing you can do.

    It's a motorbike.

You've either damaged the shifter itself, the linkage that connects it to the gearbox, or damaged the internals of the gearbox itself. If the shifter is moving normally through its full range of motion then it's probably OK, even if it's bent. Is the linkage bent? Is it fouling on some other part of the bike as you move up the gears?

EDIT: Though yeah, if you can't figure out the likely cause from looking at it, chances are you aren't going to up to repairing it yourself.

    Yeah, apologies, its a motorcycle.

As to the gear shifts, it seems to be alright, in that it will move up into second(which is much higher than it should be), but then it won't move any higher. I guess taking it to a mechanic is the best plan of action, just wondering how horribly wrong this could go I guess.

google says bent or broken shift fork.

google also says it could be expensive to replace as you have to tear down the transmission.

get a quote from a mechanic and decide from there. I did run across a few 'do it yourself' guides if you're mechanically inclined and fiscally deprived

Are you shifting while standing still? Bikes wont do that. They need to be rolling to shift through the gears. I mean, sometimes you get lucky and all the teeth on the gears are lined up and it will let you shift through at a stop, but generally they arent.

If you bent the shift lever so its actually hitting a peice of the frame or plastics or the engine, just bend it back. Just grab it with your hand and pull it out. You wont pull it off the bike or break it. They are "meant" bend instead of break because a lot of people end up dropping their bikes at some point.

If you bent the linkage, go buy a new linkage. Its like 1-3 bolts to replace the entire linkage, and its really easy.

Also, dont ever brake in a corner. I mean, you can if you absolutely, positively have to (like theres a transport truck flipped over in the middle of a blind corner), but all your braking should be done with the bike going straight and standing perfectly straight up. Unless youre hot lapping and your knee is already on the ground, theres no reason to ever need to brake while cornering. Just lean farther. You were going 25mph max, theres not a corner in the world you couldnt have navigated, rain or not.

And take a safety course, they teach you all of this stuff (except maybe replacing the linkage). If youre bailing at 25mph, i have a feeling they can teach you some stuff that will most likely save your life at some point.

*edit* its extremely, extremely unlikely that anything is mechanically wrong inside the transmissing. There just wouldnt have been enough of an impact to do any real damage at that low of a speed, unless the bike rolled down a cliff or got hit by a car after it hit the ground.

If it's just the shift lever that is bent in, then it's an easy fix. Had a similar problem when hubby dropped his bike, he bent in the shifter and it ran into the side of the bike pretty good. The shift lever was uh... 30 bucks I think from the dealership. If it's something internal that's preventing you from shifting gears, the price is going to head on up from there. But I'd try the shift lever first. >.>

If I understand correctly, as you shift to second gear, the shifting lever will not move up anymore, as in you can downshift, but from a neutral position the shifting lever does not move. This is different from you trying to shift up, but the bike not shifting up a gear.

    No, while driving. :)

Yeah, as you can guess Im pretty new to a bike. :P the main reason I panicked was the absolute douche trying to overtake me coming into the roundabout. Saying that, it was stil shitty driving. the CBT i took was a joke though, Ive had to pretty much figure out geared bikes on my tod. :D

I have to get my oil changed within the week, il ask what can be done then.

Just take a look at it right now. Sit beside the bike while its off and try and push the lever up with your hand. If its binding on the outside, you will see where its caught. Then either bend the metal back with your hand, or buy a replacement part if its beyond fixing.

What kind of bike is it?

And having taken a decent perusal with somebody of much higher knowledge, it appears the linkage has bent.I will be taking to the garage shortly. Thanks for all the help guys! :)
