The trailers left me with no strong feelings toward any of them. I'm about as interested in the setting of Type Zero and Versus as I was in 13's. The gameplay seems very derivative in those clips, so I couldn't get hyped for it.
"Hey, we've got a relatively strong female character who actually looks like she semi-belongs in a real world. What do we do about this? I know! Show her butt more!"

Yeah, that outfit lowered my expectations for the game quite a bit.
Yeah, Lightning's armor is just awful. One of the things I really liked about 13 was the world they created, and that world has no place for knight armor with fucking feathers hanging off of it. Do not try to put more one-winged angel crap in there. It doesn't belong.

So after viewing the new Versus XIII trailer I'm even more confused as to why it shares a number with XIII. Why not just call it Versus? It doesn't seem to share anything with XIII. Anyone care to enlighten me?
Versus looks to be the only S-E project I'm interested in currently. I hope it comes out this generation.

I tend to hate the modern Final Fantasies, but I will say that Versus looks shit-hot.
It's like they took the opening areas of FFVIII, made it even more modern and realistic, then threw in mechs powered by the Magitech from 3. Then, for the gameplay, they looked at Crisis Core, Dissidia, and that one game starring Vincent Valentine that we shall not speak of, and said "Okay, let's make these things better, and put them all into the game as ways to fight".
Oh, and they actually appear to be trying to adopt real world technology too. Given that a frigging APC (?!) can be seen blasting away at a protaganist in part of that video. I also noticed that the main character hijacked the turret on it, too.
Also, the protaganist isn't a whiny, topless man-child who looks like he should be starring in some pedophile's dreams, somewhere.
Basically, it's what FFVIII tried to be, and was, up until it went coo-coo for cocopuffs bonkers half-way through the story.
I still don't know why the last few Final Fantasies have targeted the "fanfic" writers demographic so heavily, when it's been proven that the early FF's up to FF7 and 8 were far more popular due in large part to their diversive casts and actual likable main characters.

It has the same lead/scenario writer so I'm sceptical that it won't go that route.

Given that the latest videos have showed some very fucked up screens (Fighting in a field, as the sky slowly turns black, the grass starts to rot, and purple light rains down on the area, for instance.), I expect that too.
There seems to be a running theme of "reality is not what you make of it" in the videos. But that's far preferable, if done properly, then the sudden plot-heel-twist of FF8's later game, where the entire setting and motives of the cast suddenly changes with no warning.
At least the trailers we've been show allude to some sort of breakdown on the part of the main character. What with the rampage in front of the building. The main character on some sort of throne, looking bored/depressed, interspersed with scenes of extreme violence, stuff like that.
I may be mis-recalling this, but didn't a really old interview on Versus, long before we even got info on it, basically state that you're playing as what's traditionally considered a villain protagonist in FF's, and that woman in the second trailer is the other "side" of the game?
I recall the interviewer being quick to point out that the point of the story is that it's very much a "gray and gray" morality sort of thing. In that you may be wearing black, but you're just on the opposite side of a conflict, or something similar to that, you're not necessarily the bad guy.
Perhaps that's changed since then, since the magazine I picked that interview up in was released many years ago. But that'd be an interesting take on a FF game, if it's true. That sort of story seems more Tactics-ish, then the anime dreck that's been forced down our throats lately.
The protagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Noctis is the last heir to the Caelum Dynasty, which rules over the only remaining city-state that controls the Crystals. Noctis attempts to protect his city-state against those who seek to conquer it and take the Crystals by force. Nomura has compared Noctis's family to the modern-day Japanese mafia.
Yeah I'm not sure why someone would have been excited for a western reboot over a game that might actually be good
This was before we knew the name was tied with Agito. Many suspected Type-0 to be something entirely new, and linked to the supposed Western project (which does exist, we just don't know if it's an FF game).
Wow, need to get caught up on all this, but I noticed these posted over on GAF, from the demo I guess. They finally made WoL a character from the game!
At first I thought this was a Shadowlord skin for Garland. Then I realized it's his Amano portrayal.
Still cool, but still. :?
And who is Prishe, exactly? The description I saw made her sound like Elf Tifa. Is this a good thing?
If Tifa and Cid had a kid, and both happened to be elves, Prishe would probably be the result.
She fights using martial arts, making her the second brawler in the game, and her perpetual swearing guarantees that all her interactions with the other characters will be memorable. :^:
And on the subject of Dissidia, many of the alts have been ripped from the demo.
Cowgirl Tifa, Wedding Yuna, President Laguna....some serious win here.
As for trailer impressions:
Versus: Holy fuck this looks amazing. It almost looks like Nomura was careful observing FFXIII's development, because this already looks to address many of the problems I listed.
For one, the setting isn't as disconnecting as FFXIII; it looks a lot closer to our modern world, minus some crazy machines. The clothing of the characters also matches the setting (a clothing designer was hired for this game, so you can rule out belts and zippers here).
The gameplay is not only in real-time, but looks phenomenal. The characters interact with the environments seamlessly, reacting to explosions and debris instead of just standing around blankly like in FFXIII. Looks like switching between characters also means switching gameplay styles, which should keep things fresh. We also got Noctis jacking robots ala Vanquish.
His character seems close to how I predicted him too, not quite Cloud or Squall at this point, as promised. The story looks like it's going to heavily involve his connection to his family (pretty sure one POV shot is him as a child with his dad).
The game also seems to employ the maximum amount of mustaches for an FF game.
My hype for this is undying. No chance of being disappointed here.
KH 3D: I was initially disappointed that we devolved into the old KHI looks for Sora and Riku, with the trailer opening up with their cooler sequel designs.
Regardless, my jaw dropped a bit when they showed off the crazy environment interaction, with Sora hopping off poles and Riku doing some crazy-fast wall-hopping.
Also, Hunchback of Notre Damme!!
Hyped. Hope it's this year.
FFXIII-2: So the ending is pretty much spoiled for me at this point. Lack of pants aside, the armor does look pretty sweet, and the character Lightning clashes with (man or woman?) had a neat look too. Still not enough shown to ease my fears.
Type-0: I just feel this is a wasted opportunity. Why didn't they just put it on the 3DS or some other beefier console?
If this game is SE's answer to Monster Hunter, then it'll probably have a multiplayer element, right? Assuming it's local, as it usually is, that means it'll probably take off in Japan, but remain dead in the US.
Once again, half the fanbase gets screwed over in some way. The game looks cool, but I just wish it had moved to another platform.

How does half the fanbase get screwed over? Some of Square Enix's biggest games have released for the PSP. Crisis Core, Dissidia, the FFT remake. If you're a Square fan, you should have a PSP.
I mean the Western fanbase, basically. In Japan ad-hoc PSP play is a big thing over there. In the US? Good luck finding a group of guys over 13 to play any kind of handheld multiplayer.

Then yeah, I agree.
Personally, I'm a fan of the PSP. I like a lot of the games that are released for it and I like playing games on it. But yeah, outside of Ad-Hoc Party on PS3, good luck playing multi.
Also, saleswise, pretty much every PSP game is sent to die in the U.S.

I'd love a PSP to indulge my inner Square fanboy. Sadly there's not enough money coming in this year for me to satiate my 360 desires and accomodate the 3DS.
So they're actually trying to sell Tidus and Terra as villains? That's pretty goofy.
e: or wait, doesn't she start out working for whatever evil empire FF6 has going? I've never played it.
You should play it if you have a DS. It's fantastic. By far my favorite.
But yes she is originally working for the empire, but not actually by choice.
I definitely would if I could find a decently priced copy. It's a glaring hole in my FF resume. :P
And wow, they pretty much filled in everything they missed with those alt costumes. I guess Kuja and Sephiroth just didn't really have anything else to add.

Which, again, I don't know why they won't offer a simple alternative: playing it on the PS3 and using PSN to connect online.
Is it really that costly to do? I think the extra sales would re-coop the costs.
They talked about doing this with Peace Walker, so...
Also, the more I look at Lightning's armor, the more I like it. But I do enjoy Soul Calibur, so maybe my mind is playing tricks.

Yeah, unless this game changes drastically over the next several chapters (actively playing 13 now for reference) this type of thing really does seem out-of-place.
Then again, when has that mattered for Final Fantasy?

Something like that. Just seems really weird to me.
Yeah, FF8 and Type-0 ( I assume you meant Type-0) both have a school-esque thing going on.
Really though, the action and art style just look great. And so many playable characters!

But then I noticed the bare legs.
I still think it's a pretty cool outfit that in no way diminishes Lightning's character. Have her do a stage dance in that getup though, and well....

I think it's the new costume for Terra. Looks like what she wore when she was being forced to fight for the Empire.
And I'm not sure why someone might think Tidus' new costume looks evil. Maybe the black and red?
