I don't see what is fundamentally preventing dubs from improving on the original work. "Truer to the original" isn't the same as "better".
Here's a quote from big game translation guy Alexander O Smith.
Alex: I think I mentioned in an article many years ago that I found the process of ADR writing (writing dialogue to fit lip flaps) a bit like writing entirely in haiku. It's challenging, especially in Square games that have (in places) incredibly articulated lips where you can see vowel sounds being formed, to match the dialogue to fit all that. Far more challenging, however, were the technical limitations of the PS2 sound encoding used. These required us, early on, to fit not only video on screen, but extremely exacting file lengths in the Japanese. So if a line in the original was delivered in 2.3 seconds, that's all the time we had for the English. You can imagine the kind of pressures that puts not only on the writing, but on the performance! You can't ask an actor for a slight adjustment or say, "a little more angst in line 10". You have to ask for a little more angst, and oh, make it fit in 2.3 seconds. And not all file lengths were so forgiving.
Anticipation of these issues allowed everyone to better prepare, both on the writing side and the technical side, for each new game. By Final Fantasy XII, many of the technical restraints were gone, and I think you can see a marked improvement in the dub quality over the years from Final Fantasy X to Final Fantasy XII.
Ideally there'd be nothing holding back localisation staff but they can only work with the resources and processes they're given. In the wrong circumstances I don't think they can avoid compromising the original work. Things have improved a lot and hopefully things will continue to improve in the future.
No, FF3. Like the one that was made for the DS a few years ago. You're thinking of the rename of FF6.
No, I'm pretty sure we're talking about FF6, which will be listed I'm sure as FF3, since that's what it was released as in the US on the SNES. This is a release on the VC for Wii, so I'd imagine it's totally unaltered from the SNES version.
Oh god. I managed to resist picking up Chrono Trigger DS until just a few weeks ago. I don't know if I have the willpower to not get FF3(6). Maybe if my job interview goes well tomorrow I'll get it as a reward.
Eh, I'm a sucker for nostalgia and all, but in my opinion the GBA version of VI beats the living pants off of the SNES III. I would recommend that one to anybody jonsing for some III/VI action.

Cheapest used copy of the GBA version on Amazon is $46. Not going to pay that much for a game that I've already played to death. But $8 on the Wii VC? Sure, I'm game.
The online store I pre-ordered Dissidia 012 from just sent me an e-mail apologising for not sending it despite it not being out for another two weeks-ish. Weird.
EDIT: Ah, I think I understand why - I pre-ordered two things with release dates about a month apart in one order. It's probably set something off because part of my order's been partially completed for a set length of time.
Technically you can say the same thing about all FF releases after 4. Then again, you get retarded shit like FFX: Intl where they expect you to break the Sphere Grid before you attempt any extra boss.
I've played VIII four times. I leveled to 100 each time. It's not a difficult game, no matter if you level or not. There are so many (more fun) ways to break the game than just not leveling.
It wasn't until the internet that I learned that I was playing FFVIII wrong this whole time; I spammed the GF's constantly and focused on powering them up.
I still think FFX had the best system out of anything and I would love to see a return to it.

I played VIII about 70% of the way through on two occasions, first time I overgrinded, second time I undergrinded, and now, after so many years, I'm pretty sure I just didn't know what the hell I was doing.
Can anyone reveal just what the right way to play VIII was?

So I've never really played any FF games, and from the recommendation of a lot of people I went with 7 to start out. So far I can see why this game is loved by so many. It has a lot of charm, the music is good, and the cut scenes are pretty amazing when you think about the time it came out.
Only question so far is did the original not use the thumbstick to control Cloud? It's kind of weird that they would use the direction buttons instead.

It came out before using the thumbstick was common.

Could you be more specific? Coming out where on what platform?
...The Platform that gets SNES releases?
Pretty sure FF III SNES has only come out for one system before this.
Regardless it will definitely be out in Europe on Friday.
Guess I better buy some points, then.
I dunno, I know SE has been putting some stuff out on iPhone/Pad, so I thought it might be for that.
I gotta admit, I'm the "lucky" owner of a v1.0 cart. Infiinte Atmas was fun.

Friday in Europe, hopefully next monday in the states.
Guess I know what I'm picking up today, then.

It shouldn't, but I'm wondering all the same.

I would think those releases are up SE America by now.
But if they are delayed, they have every reason to delay them.
They were most likely already in american warehouses by the first of the month.
Probably the patched up US release.
So Vanish/X-Zone on all bosses, Evade and Blind being useless, no Relm Glitch.

I also prefer the old Chicago looking font for the Square SNES games.
But really, the bug fixes alone are reason to crown the GBA version. The slightly better localization and added content is gravy.

I'd bet money I missed something for the weapon/accessory one.
You can't miss anything that can't be made or purchased later on, IIRC.

It definitely came out before the Dualshock.

Yeah, Dualshock came out later, maybe in late 98 or so?
