There were no thumbsticks when Final Fantasy 7 came out. :P
That's what I originally posted, but I couldn't remember.
I wasn't entirely sure so I did a quick wiki look before posting...FF7 was January 1997, and the first analog controller appears to have been April of 1997

I've played VIII four times. I leveled to 100 each time. It's not a difficult game, no matter if you level or not. There are so many (more fun) ways to break the game than just not leveling.
I was never able to defeat Bahamut. I suppose now that I know that the point of the game is NOT to hoard your cards and NOT to level up, then I suppose I could finally do it, but I don't really want to anymore.
...besides last time I tried getting VIII to work on my PC again (yes, PC) the Win XP patch I downloaded had a virus. Seriously why inject viruses into a twelve year old game patch, WHY????

I'm not sure there is a "right way" to beat VIII.
I also farm for magic to junction. I always junctions my GFs to my characters in a set pattern.* And I always kept squall's health in the yellow and spammed refresh to activate his limit.
*If I remember right, if you split up the GFs by every 3rd GF, it covers everyone's stats really well. So like:
It wasn't until the internet that I learned that I was playing FFVIII wrong this whole time; I spammed the GF's constantly and focused on powering them up.
I still think FFX had the best system out of anything and I would love to see a return to it.
I played VIII about 70% of the way through on two occasions, first time I overgrinded, second time I undergrinded, and now, after so many years, I'm pretty sure I just didn't know what the hell I was doing.
Can anyone reveal just what the right way to play VIII was?
Draw magic a lot. Seriously.
Also, don't spread the Random card game rule around the world like I did--you'll hate life.

So basically, every fight in that game for me was simply pushing ▲ a lot followed by pushing R1 a lot.
Well, my point was that I wanted to defeat Bahamut, not VIII. I gave up at Bahamut, and I suppose I could have completed the game without him. But seriously, what's a FF game without Bahamut??
I didn't worry about any fancy GF patterns. Making the Stat junction scrolls are fairly easy, so I had all 6 party members with all the core junctions. I just eliminated duplicate Item, Draw, etc commands to make room.

Wow, I actually earned a theme for getting the 'analyze 100 enemies' trophy. Incentive!
I'd bet money I missed something for the weapon/accessory one.
You can't miss anything that can't be made or purchased later on, IIRC.
There are a few one of a kind accessories which are the result of missions or some chests, but as long as you know not to dismantle or sell them you can go back and get them any time.
The chest ones that I know of are either on Pulse or in Eden so you can go back and get them.
Following my wish to see a return of FFX's battle system, I was somewhat surprised to see that the upcoming Bleach game for PS3 (still don't even know what kind of game it is) will be using a system similar to the Sphere Grid. I've been hoping for a good HD console Bleach game, so I hope this one delivers.
Also, the official UK site is doing a "Character Battle Tournament" where people vote for the winner. I'm always a sucker for discussing who would win in a fantasy battle between two characters, so this could be fun when the hero vs hero pairings come up.
Laguna would clearly lose to Yuna because he would get a cramp.
Cloud beats Lightning because <sexist comment>.
Lightning beats Kain because he's busy moping, but then gets beaten by Golbez.

Upcoming fights include:
Laguna vs Yuna
No score draw; Laguna wouldn't want to hurt her, while Yuna would be too timid to make the first attack against an opponent suffering from leg cramps.
Cloud vs Lightning
Score draw; they'd go toe-to-toe for a minute, until all the Cloud fangirls come out of nowhere and invade the arena. Lightning would then proceed to punch every single one of them in the face, after which Cloud would show his gratitude for getting rid of them, and the two would call it quits.
Lightning vs Kain
Win to Lightning; gun(blade) beats spear. Plus there needed to be at least one completely biased result.

So... Any news on the Dissidia 2 Prologue? I know it was supposed to hit today but in light of recent events I'm not sure if that's been impacted or not.
I'm going to re-create some stages from FFT in LEGOs when I have some time. I'm on a total LEGO kick.
I was looking around the internets for some inspiration... I'm just going to leave this here:

Holy shit that's impressive. Though really, with some of the things I've seen people do with Legos, nothing should surprise me.

It's nice, but compared to, say, the to minifig scale Serenity, it's not out and out impressive.
Then again, it's like insulting everything in an art gallery for not being "David", I suppose. Can't ignore good for great without being much the poorer.
There's the issue of scale. Legos only have a finite level of detail available, so if you want something on scale with the figures, you need to make some cuts.
I'm pissed I had to add a minimum of $5 to the wallet.
This.
I'm feeling a lot less dirty now that I noticed the whole arcade mode thing. I couldn't believe they were charging $3 for twenty minutes of story. It actually feels like a nice sized chunk of the game for $3 now. I've only been messing around with Lightning for now, she's about what I expected. Pretty well balanced, it legitimately feels like I can counter most everything, albeit not in the most powerful ways. I've always been a sucker for style changing character, so I'm still leaning toward Vaan for the full game.

I got totally raped when I tried to play the story mode. Turns out not playing Dissidia for a while makes one suck
But once I got used to the controls again I went into arcade mode and it's still just as much fun. I kinda like Kain, though I imagine I'll like him better when I can customize him a bit. I had a bitch of a time killing Onion Knight with him.

Ok, I'm stuck in FF7.
I'm chasing Tifa on some kind of carriage into a city, and I can't find her. I'm assuming she's in this don guy's place? But I can't get in.
I got totally raped when I tried to play the story mode. Turns out not playing Dissidia for a while makes one suck
Ugh I did to. It was embarrassing. So used to playing my leveled characters with great gear and accessories going back to not being able to one shot the opponent with your first HP attack after a break is eye opening.

Yet another stupid decision by Square-Enix - Prologus won't be on the EU store until the 23rd. 2 days before the full release.
And given the track record of where I've preordered it from, i.e. the fact that they tend to deliver a day early, that means I'll have exactly 1 day to play Prologus.
Well done, you colossal bunch of silly gooses.

I can't imagine them doing it by choice, they probably missed a deadline or something. There are people on the Square Enix Members website going on about how appalling it is and how they're never going to buy a Square Enix game again, which seems a bit much for a small delay for a demo.

After seeing all the bullshit surrounding Dragon Age II, it just makes me think that most video game fans online are spoiled, self-entitled little shits.
Anyway, in an attempt to keep this on-topic: Looks like the cologne items you earn in Prologus can be traded for character levels in Duodecim. So even though you're not technically leveling up while playing Prologus, you kind of are.
