jwalk the reason the generalization is dumb is because the people who actually have trouble interacting in social settings or getting dates aren't failing because they're "geeks". They're failing because they lack social skills, which is not the same thing.

The real mystery is how these two completely separate things came to be associated in the first place

geeks, btw, are a sexy subculture and anyone who proclaims that geeks can't get action simply because they're geeky is perpetuating a stereotype to cover up his or her insecurities/laziness/fear of rejection

SEE: Every episode of Big Bang Theory.
Why would I see an episode of the Big Bang Theory?
no, i think it becomes a convenient excuse for those people to shutout society.
If someone is legitimately ostracizing people because they love battlestar gallactica, then they're a shitty person. But I can guarantee that isn't the case 9 times out of 10. But that is what is blamed when the demographic we're talking about complain of this sort of thing.
They don't list that perhaps they are shy and introverted, that they maybe have poor hygiene or poor social skills and should work on that. Areas that get described as "geek culture" are so mainstream these days that that excuse just does not fly. It just doesn't.

But is it really that hard to see how they are related?
Scifi, RPGs, video games, etc are a form of escapism. Escapism from a world in which someone is shy and introverted.
Then it sort of just grows out from there, and becomes a convenient label to slap on that person.

My second cousin is my dentist. He's a 50+ year old Dead-Head fan.
He told me I could. The hygienist yelled at him and he just shrugged. So I took his word for it.
I never had any issues with it.
