Another shoe thread (running and casual)

I'm planning to buy two pairs of shoes.

One pair will be for running. The other will be for casual, everyday use (with jeans mostly, but also shorts). I would like to keep these separate (i.e. I usually wear my running shoes just for running/gym).

I browsed around Zappos for about 15 minutes and found these.

Each image is a link.

I like these because their color scheme is casual and trendy. Even though they're filed under "running shoes" I think I would wear them primarily for everyday stuff.

Expensive as hell, but they are leather, have the classic converse look, and I like the slightly-dirty effect built-in. I also really like the charcoal/red version.

I'm OK with the looks, but according to the reviews (yes, I read those) they are super light weight and comfortable, which are great qualities for running shoes.

These have excellent reviews and they look spiffy (in my opinion).

Anyway, feel free to leave comments and make counter-recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Let me be the first to suggest Vibram Fivefingers for your gym/running shoes :P

In general for running/gym shoes, you want ones that are nice and light, don't have excess padding/supports, and the sole is level (toes, arch, and heel are the same height).

IIRC, Nike makes a good bare essentials shoe, I think it's the Nike Air Free line. Converse Allstars (aka Chuck Taylors) are another great option.

Recently, I've become fond of Skechers' casual shoes, especially the cheap loafer types. Really light, plain flat sole, but comfortable on my feet and they hold up pretty well to wear n tear.

Vibram is not really for the casual runner. I'd recommend visiting a running store and having them find you a decent pair of Nikes. Better safe than sorry. Stick with Nikes or something similar and then try the Fivefingers when the opportunity presents itself.

Since we all have different body types, it's difficult to tell you what to buy. However, you usually can't go wrong by purchasing a supportive pair of shoes from a running store.

For running, you have to try them on. Different shoes are for different feet types, and if you get the wrong pair it will be extremely painful. If you're serious about running, go to a real running store.

Oh, I should mention that I also own a pair of vibrams. I just don't like running in them (I use them for trail hiking and rock climbing).
