ah, i'd been trying to find this when y'all were talking about snow induced depression.

    http://www.caltrops.com/pointy.php?action=viewPost&pid=8858
I grew up in a small town. A couple of years after I left it forever, a guy goes into the Canadian Tire, which is like a Wal-Mart with no clothes, a week before Christmas and asks to buy a box of shells. The clerk hands it to him, and guy says, absentmindedly like, that he's also thinking of a new gun, and could he see that 12ga. behind the counter?

Clerk hands that to him. He loads the gun and heads out, only to be intercepted by the manager, who I went to school with and remember as the guy who shifted his car into reverse, on a dare, while travelling on the highway, at highway speeds. It was an old GM boat of some kind; it stalled and, without power steering or brakes, he had no choice but to paint a guardrail and nearly kill everyone aboard. Finding himself, once again, in command of a life-or-death situation, he tells the customer not to leave. The guy answers that he intends to kill himself and, if barred from leaving, he'll do it in the store. Now wise from years, the manager says the parking lot will be fine.

Guy sits in a snowbank and does the deed while last-minute holiday shoppers look on. I'd tell you they were horrified, and unless you grew up in a small town, you'd believe me.

Three days later, I arrive home for Christmas and go shopping at the Canadian Tire. There's a huge bloodstain in the snowbank, which I go over to inspect. My Mom had told me a guy killed himself, but not the how or where, and I didn't think anything of it because townsfolk are always offing themselves. It's probably a theme in shitty little towns everywhere.

So I'm staring at this huge stain, looking for deer parts or some other clue to its origin, when this female employee ambles over, having just finished work.

    "Unbelievable, huh?" she says.

"Yeah," I reply, jovially, "looks like the holiday suicide season is finally here!" She begins to weep. I stand there for a few beats, wondering where my joke went wrong, and decide to take my business elsewhere.

    -Ray!

No one is 'okay' with having sex with a mind controlled person the previous discussion was if mind controlling someone to do something they wouldn't do was worse than rape. Some said no because you could mind control that person into liking whatever the hell it is they are doing which means no emotional trauma. Fluffy called these people monsters.

Back in highschool there was this girl my friends insisted on keeping around because, I dunno, two of them wanted to jump her. Girl was layers of batshit and insecurities, and she considered herself 'wiccan'. I use the quotes because I don't know much about Wiccans, but I know enough to know that some highschool jackass who burns incense and thinks she's Sabrina the Teenage Witch isn't a Wiccan. Girl maybe read the wikipedia article on it, but that was it.

So anyway, she wanted me to like her. Which I didn't. Because she was a dumbass. So she performed a 'spell' -- again, I use the quotes because, c'mon. The next day I didn't turn up at school and, swear to god, she thought she'd killed me or something. Spent the whole fucking day freaking out thinking her spell had backfired and she'd killed me. Which kind of makes you wonder, if she thought what she was doing could potentially kill me, getting what she wanted obviously meant more to her than that risk.

People like that do more than creep me out. On the one hand you have a harmless idiot, but on the other you have a person who sincerely believes they can make people do whatever they want without any thought for what that person wants. It's selfish and manipulative to an extent I find appalling, and people who can justify invading someone's mind (which they believe they are capable of, despite how looney that sounds) display a capability to violate people to meet their own ends.

Like, it's just such a funny thing to get angry over. Even if free will was real (heh 8-)), it's just such an outlandish hypothetical. Could you imagine, in real life, seeing someone get righteously furious over "you would totally mind control someone if mind control wasn't a fictional concept, you sicko!"

I just think it's like finding out that most chatters would snitch to the anthropomorphic blue cat overlords who rule the earth that you were a dog owner before the revolution came.

Finding out that, when you ask people, they say that if they had the ability to control other people's thoughts they would use it to their advantage in some consequence-free imagined utopia doesn't surprise me and, more importantly, is never going to happen anyways.

Anyways, regarding people who think they can cast spells, it should be kept in mind that at least as many of them stick to "Help Bob get over his dead cat" spells as anything nefarious, and it rarely has an intent more controlling than using perfume or showing cleavage.
