Anyone else noticed that every since the two races in Cata came out, the rest of the character models look like shit?
Yep.
And there's a quote (that I can't be arsed to find, it was from like September) from Blizzard saying the artists are going to take a pass at the original 8 races to bring them up to speed, but it wasn't a planned feature for Cataclysm's launch.
Trolls and Undead are pretty much going to benefit the most from this.

I dunno, I actually noticed the humans the most No definition in their faces. Well...the dwarf female side profile looks like a toon from Minecraft.

Oh my god yes I want this to be true so badly.
They should include Belfs and Draenei too because honestly their texture work is pretty bad too.

They have been saying they want to update them for awhile, but they are worried people will freak out/bitch when their character doesn't look the same, etc. Which is true, but hell, it needs to be done. Give everyone a one-time face change or something.

When they do update the old races, I really, really, really hope they get rid of the idle bounce animation of female night elves. I was originally drawn to the night elves because Warcraft 3 portrayed them as quite feral and savage, but in WoW I found myself playing a cheerleader.

Nevar! And they will also [strike]spin[/strike] flip TWICE per jump!
Let's be careful, or the blood elves will get mad :P
And let's let the artists take a stab at some of the racials too, eh? Maybe they can bring the old ones up to speed, since the dev team doesn't seem to care. They delegated professions to the janitor, so it's not unprecedented.

I dunno, I actually noticed the humans the most No definition in their faces. Well...the dwarf female side profile looks like a toon from Minecraft.
I turned away and ran from Ysera earlier and noticed her face texture is REALLY sharp, as I imagine goblins / worgen are, compared to the original 8. Human faces, especially males, are awful.
Humans and gnomes aren't really going to benefit as much from this, I think. If you look at the worgen, the ears aren't symmetrical in most cases (I thought one set for one of my characters was, and surprise, the left ear is bent a little more). Plus, there's all the fur. So if you think about trolls, their affectations are going to be pretty extreme compared to what they are now. Undead can benefit a lot too. Hell, even the tauren.
Night elves could have some subtle changes done for their hair, to allow for flower reeds to be worn and such. More sparkle to their skin. That sort of thing. Dwarf males and their beards will probably be made to look a little more grungy, without being dirty / unkempt. I dunno what they could do for female dwarves aside from touching up their hair. One trait female dwarves have now is their hair is pretty much the most animated out of any race, including the new ones, so that's something they can keep and maybe add more detail to.

It is true, it's just a matter of when it's happening.
As for Belves and Draenei, if they get a pass it won't be as detailed as the other races. The original 8 need actual model work. Draenei and Beleves I think are okay, model wise, but yeah their textures could use a bump. I'd be surprised if they did anything at all for those two though, and I'm not counting on it.

#1 thing I want - to be able to wear a hat without suddenly getting a buzz-cut
When they do update the old races, I really, really, really hope they get rid of the idle bounce animation of female night elves. I was originally drawn to the night elves because Warcraft 3 portrayed them as quite feral and savage, but in WoW I found myself playing a cheerleader.
I agree to this, so much. WoW changed the character of night elves from what they were and I was disappointed; a race of women being the more warrior types while the men were the magic oriented. And it wasn't absolute, but it was a nice flip from how things are in fantasy in general where men are the warriors and women are the magic users.
Blizzard being unoriginal is hardly news, but I was amused by these particular quotes:
Yogg-Sarons Puzzle Box (which I know already has scores of hilariously blatantly mad libbed Lovecraft quotes) has two familiar quotes when you try to open it.
"What can change the nature of a man?"
"You resist... You cling to your life as if it actually matters... You will learn..."
Now where have I seen that second one before? It's missing something though.
"You resist... You cling to your old life as if it actually matters... You will learn..."
They have been saying they want to update them for awhile, but they are worried people will freak out/bitch when their character doesn't look the same, etc. Which is true, but hell, it needs to be done. Give everyone a one-time face change or something.
I've had discussions with my ex about how people who play MMORPGs to a "hardcore" extent often hate change, period. Even if change is for the better. They always seem to have something snarky to say, or some issue to take.
Given Blizzard's design over the last couple expansions, I think they're willing to tune those voices out.

It would be nice if they gave troll females an idle animation finally
... Holy shit I never thought about that. They don't even breathe in deeply and exhale now-and-then (which I think is the human male idle animation), huh?
They DID fix night elf male idle animations though; night elf male feet use to shift to the left and right while standing still. It bugged the hell out of me and when I installed Cata / reactivated my account, I looked closely just to humor myself about it not being fixed yet and it was.

I'd say the worst two are Humans and Orcs, probably by virtue of being made first. They both look pretty damn terrible. Next would probably be Night Elves and Tauren - NEs need to just look better, they are Elves, they shouldn't be so blocky, Tauren are just ugly and boring. Then Trolls, Dwarves, and Gnomes (in that order). I'd say Dwarves (at least males, maybe not females) and Gnomes don't actually look that terrible, just because the blocky-ness kind of suits Dwarves (they are afterall, a rugged people) and Gnomes just look pretty decent in general (I suppose maybe they are small enough that Blizzard didn't have to spare as many polys ). Trolls are so-so, not great but not completely awful. But compare the Troll models to Forest (ZA) or Ice Trolls (Zul'Drak) and it's night & day.
Edit: Oops, forgot Undead. They are ok, but definately in need of a poly update.

Imagine the shit they could do though with face paint, tusk design, piercings, etc.
Yeah that would be great. And really, I would love to see that kind of stuff expanded for everyone. I think pretty much all races should be able to have some kind of tatoo (like, Dwaves should be able to look like Wildhammer Dwarves, Orcs could have war paint, etc) and I'd love to see more options like additional beards or more hairstyles, etc.

I wouldn't go that far, sadly.
Dwarves allowing for Wildhammer tats, or even a more Dark Iron look (they wussed out by just leaving it at almost-gray), would be great yeah.
What I said above though about trolls is what I'd look forward to most. Just more detail in what exists. Remodeling the races might be asking for a lot, considering they'd have to pass through all the armor again.

Sad but true. Some better art on trolls, undead, and belfs is all I care about. The undead are maddeningly terrible looking in anything but cloth and sometimes leather.
So yeah. Retexturing can be done. Redoing hair / facial hair / other affectations, can be done. Actual models though, probably going to stay the same.
That sucks hard for the undead.
I disagree. I mean, they just did this four times this last expansion. And four times in Burning Crusade. This is not even counting the numerous NPCs they've updated to wear armor (i.e. Skeletons, Naga, Ogres, Tuskarr, etc etc).
I don't know how they design their armor, but I have to think they have some sort of template/system in place to at least make this work a little less annoying.

Yea, and it isn't like they are overly concerned with clipping, lol.
Honestly I'm surprised they don't update this stuff regularly. It isn't like they don't have an art staff in-house and the new content they've done obviously shows that it is possible from a technical standpoint. Oh well.
Racial bonuses are incredibly marginal and nearly meaningless. They shouldn't be a huge factor for you.
Play whatever race you think is cool/looks cool.
This is something I'm extremely pissed about with this game. When you look at something like Oblivion, where all the playable races have game-changing traits, WoW's "racial traits" are a goddamn joke. I understand balancing for an online environment, but it can be done without leaving everything as tiny bonuses. If everyone has 2 or 3 extreme advantages exclusive to their race, it IS still balanced in the long run. Sure, if a draenei walks up to a shadow priest and kicks the shit out of him because draenei are resistant to shadow magic, oh well, but it's not the only thing you're running into in the online environment. Because as a troll priest, your health is regenerating faster than other people's would be.

Tauren can't help it, and the undead I'll agree there.
But orcs and trolls, slouching has always been a thing they do in Warcraft.
Trolls I'll give you, but Thrall and Grom Hellscream both stand up straight. It doesn't get more orcy than them.

I hate SFK just for the low ceilings in the beginning. Even my bear is too big for that and it's relly hard to see anything.

Why the hell does the human guy look like a 'roided old man.
Also, is Warlock fun? It looked fun. What's a good race for Warlock if I'm going Alliance?
