With the release of Sin and Punishment on the Virtual Console I got to thinking about what other less known N64 games I may have missed. All of the lists online say the same things. Golden Eye, Mario, and Zelda. I want some of the more obscure good games, not just the biggest sellers.
I have a copy of Wetrix, Tetris Sphere, have read online about something named Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-O, and now want to see what else is out there that I missed or that never bothered to come to America.
Blast Corps. You have to use various vehicles to clear a path for a missle truck stuck going forward in a straight line for some reason. I spent may hours on this game.
Goddammit undein I was going to suggest that and then I hit preview post. Anyway yeah, Mystical Ninja 64 is great, and Goemon's Great Adventure is wonderful as well. It's also co-op.

Oh man how did I forget that in my post? My wife dug that out Goemon's Great Adventure of a box she had a couple of years ago, it was one of the best side scrollers I have ever played.

I didn't really start following video games on the web until 2003-2004 or so, so I don't know how "high profile" many of these games are. They're just my best guesses as to stuff that might have been overlooked.
Doom 64 wasn't low profile, but I think reviews were unnecessarily harsh upon its release. It's really a fantastic game if you dig that style of classic shooter. A fan made port was released for the PC that is quite excellent, but it requires a certain unsavory file to actually use it.
I hear nothing but good things about Ogre Battle 64. I'm not real big on SRPG's, but those that are seem to hold it in very high regard.
Conker's Bad Fur Day was released at the end of the system's life cycle (might have even been the last game released for the console, but I'm not certain). Being developed by Rare during their peak leads me to believe this wasn't as overlooked as you'd think for a game released at a console's dying breath, but I know it has a strong cult following. The humor may not be as "shocking" as it was back then (can't really say, I've never played the game), but it's supposed to be a solid platformer regardless.
Daika...I'm sorry, my fingers won't even let me finish even though they know it's a joke.
Hybrid Heaven. It's a shooter-brawler-RPG. Not exactly a common combination of game styles. You can shoot stuff in real time, but hand to hand combat is done in a sort of turn-based RPG style. Lots of leveling and stat adjustment, which is a staple of RPGs.
This is in my top 3 racing games. It's just an incredibly solid experience: great track design, great physics, great frame rate, tons of style and it never takes itself too seriously. It's arguably more fun to simply explore each of the lovingly-crafted stages and try to discover all the ridiculous shortcuts and easter eggs that the developers have hidden (seriously, dozens per track) than it is to actually race. And that's saying something, because it's also a very fun racer in the vein of San Francisco Rush.
I would love to see a spiritual successor to this game, but it probably won't happen since the developers were shuttered in 2008.
Off the top of my head and mostly skipping the big ones....
Single Player: Blast Corps, Mischief Makers, Operation: Winback, (fuck those laser beams though) Hybrid Heaven, Body Harvest, Jet Force Gemini, Star Wars Episode 1: Podracer, Pilotwings 64 and Space Station Silicon Valley.
Multiplayer: Bomberman 64, Duke Nukem 64, Gauntlet Legends, WCW vs NWO: Revenge, (Still the best wrestling game ever made) F-Zero X and Forsaken 64.
There are others, but those are probably my favourites that sometimes fall through the cracks. The 64 is still probably my favourite multiplayer console that has ever been made.
I absolutely loved Flying Dragon. It's basically a fighting game with ridiculous gimicks (Rpg style leveling up for characters and items, equipable items, a little bit of strategy, 100's of collectibles).
I'm not really sure how great it's aged, but I sunk an almost comical amount of time into that game back in the day.
I think if someone ever made a list of "Top 10 star wars video games", it would just go:
#1: Every single star wars game on the N64.
#2: You know what? Fuck this list. Go get your N64 out and start playing those star wars games.
That's just because it was the golden age of Lucasarts star wars games. On the PC at or near that time, you had Jedi Knight and Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance (and the superior versions of Star Wars: Eipisode 1 Racer and Rogue Squadron) - aka, the real best Star Wars games.

Congratulations, you are the only person in the world who thinks so.
To get back on topic, I remember the N64 Excitebike getting a lot of good press at the time, but it seems largely forgotten now.
N64 mario tennis is by far the best version. Also, Body Harvest is amazing for its time, and makes me sad that Rockstar aren't using the GTA4 engine to make a sequel.
You shouldn't get Bangaio on N64, it's quite expensive and better on Dreamcast anyway. There really aren't any decent Japan exclusives other than S&P on N64 because it was a total flop over there. Custom Robo was quite popular but there's a translated Gamecube version that's probably better to play instead.
This really isn't a console of hidden gems IMO, that Rare and Star Wars games are getting mentions says it all. Also a lot of these have not aged well and the ones that have are best played on virtual console courtesy of the Wii's *excellent* N64 emulator. Maybe we'll get Goemon this year as our one N64 VC release!
Harvest Moon 64, most charming game in the series.
Truer words have never been spoken. You haven't lived until you've hugged a cow so much its milk turns to gold. It's also the only time I'd ever recommend pursuing a relationship with a complete drunkard with daddy issues.
No one mentioned Snowboard Kids yet? It's probably not as good as I remember it though. Somersaults were impossible.
In that same vein, Aerofighters Assault. It was hella disorienting and the missiles never hit anything you actually wanted to hit, but damn if it wasn't fun blowing stuff up. To this day I haven't beaten the B2 bomber mission.
Blowing stuff up in Blast Corps was a blast too, but shit it was rock hard. Anyone remember the pac-man minigame?
Also Turok wasn't so bad, some levels were too long but the weapons were cool.
fragglefart on

Once you get all of these good games out of the way, it'll be about time for you to play War Gods. Afterwards, we'll drag you back into the room after letting you "leave" so you can be strapped to a chair and forced to watch Tony Hawk do a live Let's Play of Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. while he does his business on the shitter.
Glad to see any of the San Francisco Rush games mentioned. IMO, the racing in SF Rush is better than the racing in Mario Kart 64. I still love the original.
But there are two other games that must be mentioned.
The first game I'll mention, IMO, does Battle Mode better than Mario Kart 64.
Buckle the fuck up.
Does Mario Kart use its lightning bolts in Battle Mode? No. Does Vigilante 8? Yes!
Mario Kart uses koopa shells. Vigilante 8 uses mortar shells.
What does Vigilante 8 have that Mario Kart doesn't? Bees, Disco balls, spare tires, earthquake making bass speakers, and gas fumes among other things. All of which are powerful enough to ruin the structural integrity of your vehicle. Not only that, but nearly every weapon can be used in multiple ways, and every arena has a bunch of hazards and destructible things.
The second game I'll mention may be dated, but it will never get old.
It is the only football game you will ever need.
I could go on and on about this game, but it's pretty much best summed up with this video. It is always this crazy and over the top with each game. And the play editor which adds an additional page of offensive strategies helps add to the longevity of the game.
One thing I should add is that the original NFL Blitz is the only one that does NOT have Fire Mode. That is a GOOD thing, because Fire Mode broke the crap out of the game. Infinite Turbo + needs two tacklers to be taken down = Touchdown on the first play on offense. And Fire Mode lasts a long time. Get the original to avoid that BS.

I used to love that ridiculous game.

I didn't hate Mario Party 1, but it certainly hated my controller and the palm of my hand.

Aside from what has been mentioned, I used to enjoy Body Harvest.

Bet it has aged terribly though.
