Space/Ambient-genre music

Hey all, I've been listening to The Social Network soundtrack from Trent and Atticus, playing Mass Effect 2, watching Sunshine, and this type of music used in those things has been really great to have on in the background. I was just curious as to what the "official" (if any) name of this type of genre is, as well as to any suggestions for other artists to look out for.

Thanks in advance!

Experiment putting things into Last.fm and see what it gives you. I prefer a more zen/nature inspired ambient music, but Last.fm insists on giving me ambient industrial/electronica when I play "ambient" radio.

Dunno if you ever played X3, but I always really enjoyed the ambient music in it. Very relaxing.

If you liked the Social Network soundtrack I would definitely recommend getting the album Ghosts by NIN. In fact a few songs from the movie were reworked from this album.

    I would also recommend...

    Boards of Canada
    Aphex Twin
    Godspeed You! Black Emperor

I'm a big fan of the american dollar and The Flashbulb for ambient tunes.

Look up the EVE soundtrack, quite a few good ambient tracks there.

Carbon based lifeforms, ochre, and solar fields might be something to look into

Future sound of london, particularly lifeforms is awesome, but it's not as spacey as it is earthy.

Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, is I believe, a classic of that kind of genre. Just had a listen to it and I'll be picking it up myself. Some of Moby's ambient stuff is good too, especially the bonus ambient disc that came with his Hotel album (probably better than the album itself to be honest).

There's also Mogwai in the post-rock type category.

I already thought the soundtrack to this game was good when I first played it but this track just sealed the deal in my mind.

Selected Ambient Works (esp Vol 2) is considered one of THE ambient albums.

Beyond that, the rest of his stuff is not at all what you want.

Dead Space has a good sound track. Not very 'relaxing' as if you played the game hearing certain cords will make you reach for your gun and checking all the shadows and vents.
