Fun thing so far that I've noticed about PvP.

A couple of Level 30's have little chance against a mass of low level characters!

I'm trying to figure out a decent healing spec that works at lower levels. I really want the Warden stuff, but majoring in that doesn't really cut it with the points available to you. You really need Sentinel or Purifier as the main points sink at that level.

At level 15 I'm Warden/Sentinel and I'm tens of thousands above anyone in healing done whenever I do warfronts. Problem is, it takes forever to kill anything in PVE.

Good thing I can make entirely different soul sets and swap on the fly! Liking the freedom in this game's class system.

The healing in this game is tricky though if you want to be as efficient as possible, since there are so many different heal spells that lend themselves to specific situations, etc. I find myself binding some weird ass keys I've never done before in an MMO. My "healing bar" is CTRL + 1 - 4 then CTRL + Q - R for the first eight slots.

I... I can't stop making characters. This is the first time where I've found an MMO where all of the base archetypes were really fun, even from the get-go.

Heck, the LEAST interesting one is my backstabbing, teleporting, mad bomber.

My most recent is a very plain Jane-looking, down-home kind of gal who I plan on making into a Necromancer of some sort.

I also really love the animations - I spent several minutes earlier on my female dwarf warrior just marveling at the different ways she'd hold weapons - dual-wielding, two-handed claymore that's bigger than she is, and sword and board.

I'm really jazzed for this and it might be enough of a buy to tide me over until Guild Wars 2 comes out and takes over my life. It'll give me something to play when I'm not raiding in WoW.

So evidently, turning off shadows completely makes the game run acceptable.
Still.. Shadows seems like an important graphical feature.

Yup I had to do that too. I have a good enough computer. Can run games like Dragon Age, Lotro, ect on high... but I couldn't even run this game on medium!

Then I switched shadows off and BAMN, running like a charm.

Actually, given that they're messing with time travel, it could very well be true that every ascended defiant is the one sent back and they all end up in the same timeline.

I understand this is your opinion, but honestly, this part is just plain wrong. The animations in the game are one of the best things it has going for it. I really haven't seen such smooth animations in an MMO pretty much ever. Casting animations are great, running animations are great, enemy animations are pretty good as well. What animations are you seeing that are bad?

Perhaps your seeing a different game than i am? None of the animation frames have been particularity smooth, indeed they just seem more "quick" than anything. I do have all the other graphic settings pretty much cranked up and the game dosn't actually seem laggy unless i turn on anti aliasing so I really don't know what the difference is between your experience and mine.

Now that im out of the guardian newb area the game has opened up a bit and dosn't look so freaking drab.

The glossy comment was more for the other games than Rift. Its also possible that what I consider "glossy" is things like the sheen the angel's give off. As far as my graphical comments are concerned, yes the graphics are technically better than many games before it, but they still just don't look good to me, not bad, just ok. Theres just not a whole lot that i have seen that was "wow thats nice". One of those nice things being the Halo that you get from certain buffs. I am also playing a ranger as my primary so theres not a whole lot of "flashy" things that can be done right now.

And maybe all of this really boils down to ambiance. When I first played wow's undead zone I was extremely impressed. The place settings on the land scape, the little flourishes on the rotting houses, the right levels of darkness, the music and sounds, the tone of forsaken in general when they talked about their plight, all combined to create an atmosphere greater than its parts. For me its really hard to describe each and every individual piece for that reason. It all comes together in one package. Rift on the other hand only manages a "passing" grade at that. Its not spectacular, its not horrible either.

And the real caveat to all of this? 4 hours play time. I haven't even scratched the surface.

Although I hope we can agree that the intro movies need more ham with the cheese.

I downloaded the game last night and I'm having a good time so far. The characters look kinda weird, but other than that it was a good time for the amount I played. The combat was smooth and the talent trees, while daunting at first glance, seem to offer a variety of playstyles.

I did run into an annoying bug when I alt-tabbed to here to see which server everyone was on. When I tried to get back into the game it would auto alt-tab me back out. I had to switch to windowed mode just to actually play.

My Paragon warrior, Klean will be contacting the right people in The Six Mouths when I get home today.

Oh, my favorite part so far has to be the charge. I always jump before I charge because I fly/hover to the target. I don't know if that's intentional, but it's a fun visual.

It does sound like it's a bit laggy. I had the same exact problem, the animations seemed "quick" a bit off. Turned off shadows and one or two other settings and they were as smooth as butter.

Doesn't change the fact I think the animations are very uneven (some very cool some and some bland/awkward).

On another note, Dwarfs without beards look RIDICULOUS. Maybe amongst the ugliest faces I've ever seen. I don't mean bad graphics ugly, I just mean UGLY. Creepy child molester ugly. But they have some sick beards and 'staches that very efficiently cover up the horribleness that is their face.

I'm kinda upset you can't customize body size (fat/skinny/buff). I've seen some dwarf NPC's with a much fatter build and look very reminiscent of WAR's (Warhammer MMO) dwarfs. Which is a good thing to be reminiscent of!

I've been dicking around with a Paladin/Warlord/Paragon, mostly focusing on the first two. Like the synergy the two get, with the debuff auras/increased melee damage on a target/etc.

Now if only I had a better machine so I didn't have to run the Low Quality renderer. Havn't had any frame-rate issues with it, though.

My biggest quibble with the animations is that they don't transition well. For example, the jump animation looks decent when stationary, but if you do it when you're running or doing other stuff, it cuts off the end of the jump animation and looks really wonky. The anticipation of the jump animation is pretty consistently meh, but the ending squish looks great to me (when you're stationary, and only then).

You can get up cliffs this way and surprise the heck out of people in PvP, especially the Codex when they think they're all safe sniping at you. However, if you fall a long way and then charge something on the ground before you land, you still take falling damage when you do eventually land.

Friend of mine with a 4870x2 hasn't been so lucky with the client in B5 causing VPU crashes unless everythings on low, I've only been crashing infrequently during the invasions.

I also get VPU crashes unless everything is on low in Rift. Its really quite odd when it happens. The screen freeze, go black, then come right back up after about a second and continue playing. I didn't have a chance to troubleshoot it much yet. I was going to try re-installing drivers + DX to see if that did any good. But to be honest, I've had little luck with this PC and graphics cards. Got it as a deal and it just doesn't have the power (graphically or electrically) to push stuff like this.

I tried out a cleric last night. I think I like it better than my rogue, but I have a question. Mana regeneration seems really, really fast. So fast that I don't think I could run out of mana even if I just stood there and chain cast my most expensive spells. Of course, I'm only level 8 or so. Does the mana cost go up faster than the mana pool does at higher levels?

We're finally done with our first guild quest!
I've currently picked the dungeon quest (Complete realm of fae 15 times) as we have enough players to run it regularly but we might go for the player kill quest (Kill 50 players of any level) as we're pwning it in the warfronts.

I've tried a warlock/chloro up to nearly 10 with a dominator 3rd slot instead of necro. This was a mistake. Squirrel with 2s cast time that suffers knockbacks is pretty horrible while soloing. Warlock/chloro does make a very nice dot+selfhealer, though. I think I'd like to try stormcaller/summoner instead - are the mutual air spell crit/dmg boosts from this combo as good as they look on paper?

Yeah, your spells actually start costing more than your mana regen around lvl 14 or so? If you haven't trained in a while the lower level spells are also a lower mana cost. I noticed the same thing and thought it was hilarious while it lasted.

Regarding the story, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention, but I was under the impression that there was a big war, then you were brought back from the dead after said war to protect the world from recurring evil. Both factions are more or less after the same end goal, but they hate each other's ideals.

Edit: Reading more, I guess the Defiant lore includes time travel. I've only played Guardian, where there is absolutely no time travel nonsense. We're sensible.

I'm curious though, if they plan on making the Defiant more...sympathetic. They really do seem like the dudes who fucked everything up and I was hoping you'd see something more complicated.

The guardians starter stuff feels like pretty hardcore propaganda. My impression of the defiant starter area is that the future they are in is the one where the guardians rolled the defiant, and then got rolled by the dragons demon dude. So obviously the defiants not doing anything definately leads to a bad end.

So somehow machines+gods are gonna save them, even though they try to kill each other half the time.
