A few of the longer cars were able to get their wheels onto that ledge and sort of hoist themselves up until the ledge locked the wheels up. :/

Definitely disappointing since that design is capable of climbing the peak after the wall.

I seem to be mutating three main types of cars so far in gen 19.

    1. Dragsters
    2. Monster trucks
    3. Cars that just back flip and die without getting anywhere

the number one thing I wish would get fixed is when theres a hill, and your flat long car comes up to it, and flops over and moves back two thingies so even though it had a 100% chance of clearing the hill had the program not freaked out it gets rejected and the next ten are all shit

this is reeeaaaally starting to bug me

Well, after generation 562 of trying to build a single wheeled vehicle, here are the results:

    box2dcar-monowheel.png

The spike in times is when I lowered the mutation rate from 20% to 3%, as too many cars were being born as just a lump of polygons that would drop to the ground.

Yeah I've been trying to encourage a three-wheeled triangular shaped beastie to get as far as it can.

Unfortunately, the steeper the grade, the more wheels you need in contact to drive up said grade...

I don't really get how people are getting upset at this. I mean, there's no goal. You can't win. It's not a game. It's just a light simulation of how things evolve, which makes it interesting. But there's nothing competitive about it. You can't directly compare cars that evolved on different tracks because they evolved for different environments, which is kind of the point of evolution.

Also, raising the mutation rate above 4% or so is going to result in frequent enough mutations that you're not going to see many traits preserved over the long run.

Man I thought about making this thread a little while ago.

Farthest I've gotten my dude to go was 468 or so - but it hit a dip in the road that was so sharp on the end that no car was even able to develop wheels that could go up it, once they got in.

I've been messing with this for a few weeks and I'm pretty sure that once you get a car that isn't a huge pile of crap 2% is the best mutation rate

though sometimes it'll reject a design that running along just fine

If your car seems to be going along fine and then just resets, it means that it hit the goal (which is the number in parenthesis) and will automatically go to the next generation.

Sometimes it seems to kill the run a little too quickly... like it's in a rut, but the momentum it had should tip the car over onto another one of it's wheels, but nope game over

still fun to watch these things advance

Sometimes the definition of what constitutes progression actually looks pretty generous, I've had them stall for a while and then suddenly regain momentum

I don't really see the advantage of having more than two wheels. Seems like it can barely figure out what to do with two wheels - any more than that and it just spawns things that, more often than not, hurt it more than help it.

I think it was maybe in the metafilter thread or something, but someone said they had turned the wheel rate down to 0% and it started optimizing for how far the wheel-less blobs would roll and tumble before coming to a rest.

Okay, so I did the whole no-wheels-allowed thing, and now I turned wheels back on, but everything is so highly optimized for tumbling forward 6.5 or 6.7 that nothing with wheels can compete long enough for wheels to stay in the gene pool. It's like "Wheels? Wheels are a fad. Hammer shapes are where it's at."

This thing is fascinating. I've got a couple of different two wheeled versions going right now. One has two large wheels and flies down the track. One has a huge wheel in back and a tiny wheel in front like a tractor. It is slow as hell but very reliable. Then, I have one with a huge wheel in front and a tiny one in back. It's also very reliable, but it has very little power on the steep inclines.

I could just do this forever.

    Decided to try something.

Opened three windows late last night, all Frequency 100%, Mutation 0%, the variation being the max wheels, one had 1, one had 2, the final had 3.

Left them running overnight to see what would happen.

    Spoiler'd for multiple img's.
    Max 1:

Max 2 (which decided to make Unicycles anyway):

Max 3 (which decided to make Bicycles anyway):

I guess I'll leave them running while I go to college today, and see if they actually progress at all by the time I get back.

I may have to put them all down if they have not. :(:(:(
