So I got the sudden urge to pick up Rainbow Six 3 Gold the other day. I haven't played a "classic" Rainbow game (read: not the action-oriented ones like Lockdown and the Vegas games) since playing the original when it was released on the Dreamcast. . . nigh impossible to play on a controller without keeping the instructions open right next to you at all times due to the insane number of button combinations for various actions and commands.
I'd like to think that being older and wiser should let me get back into the planning and outfitting phases much easier, but with this being R6 after all, I'm gonna get humiliated quite a bit, aren't I?
R6:3 actually has a really great planning mode, although yes you are likely going to hate your life for a while until you get the hang of it.
Just don't play it on the hardest difficulty, since all it does is make the terrorists entirely bullshit death machines. I don't fucking care if it's supposed to be a hard game, ain't fucking nobody on the planet that can shoot four men in the heads in 3-4 seconds with an AK47 from a couple of hundred meters away.
I guess I should pick this up. The first two R6 games are my favorite tactical shooters of all time, just barely edging out SWAT 3 (haven't played SWAT 4, yeah I know shutup I'll get to it one day). Since this is the last R6 game that will ever have a planning phase. The only thing that will stop me from getting it is a recharging health or a cover system. Was any of that in for Rainbow Six 3?
If someone gets wounded, they're wounded for the rest of the mission and the next one too. The game punishes you really really hard for pissing around with Chavez etc (yes Chavez continues to have 99+ in every stat)
EDIT there is a cover system in that you can shoot through wooden doors and incrementally open them, and you can lean around corners etc
Back in the day when multiplayer was a big thing, if you knew how to position yourself you could expose about an inch of your head whilst blasting people with the ultimate in asshole guns, the FAMAS

So it plays more like the first two games than the latest abortions that carry the Rainbow Six name? Coolness, I'll definitely have to get around to those.
But yeah, I'm talking about a cover system like Vegas has. I've never played Vegas, and most likely never will, but from what I've heard it sounds a lot like the cover system in place for Mass Effect 2, Gears of War, etc. That's fine for those games, but my experience in ME 2 tells me that I would pretty much fucking hate it in something intensely tactical. Which is why I guess they added the regenerating health... And then it's no longer a tactical simulation but... Rainbow of War?
I guess I am a little bitter over the way tactical shooters have gotten dumbed down but have kept the sub-genre label so people can feel like they are all tactical. Why can't I have my things and you have your things and just let our things be different?
So anyone played Cities XL 2011? It looks amazing, but I can't find any solid opinions on it besides reviews (I usually ignore those). Still something with a metascore of 71 usually isn't complete shit.
It's good enough if you're just looking to build cities. It has the added option of an effective sandbox mode, in that you can go into options and set cheats/unlock all buildings if you want. The 3d view is a nice touch as well, as you can zoom in all the way down to street level on all your creations. I like it just for that.
I just picked up the Freedom Force and Mount & Blade bundles. Are there any must-have mods for either game that I should know about?
The only "mods" I know of for Freedom Force is built right into the game: you can create your own custom superheroes to recruit. So, obviously, people have made copyright-questionable heroes to import into the game if that's your thing.
This is incorrect, there are tons of user created campaigns, including dc/marvel ones. In fact, the only game I've played more mods for than freedom force was halflife.
http://freedomreborn.net/simple/index.php?topic=48992.0 is a forum for freedomforce, and a seeming comprehensive list of mods, though I can't speak to the quality of most, or even the obtainability. Alot of mods have been lost to time and harddrive wipes I'm afraid. I remember enjoying the JLA - Pawns of Darkness and Teen Titans mods, but beware, 99% of the mods for this game have cringe inducing voice acting.
In addition, alot of mods require community packs created in order to expand the types of powers you can pick. http://fundamentzero.com/ this being the main one, it adds stuff like shape changing, telekenisis, etc.
I'd strongly recommend pursuing these mods, compatability issues may crop up, and all might not be playable or obtainable, but there are gems in the rough, and the game engine makes it particularly well suited to mods.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I already have all the Squeenix Steam games I want.
I might need to practice my "Fuck yes, just buy Just Cause 2" and "No, really, Kane & Lynch 2 isn't the most horrendous blight on gaming ever, just download the demo and check that shit out" spiels for later this week, though.

So I took a look at the Squenix catalog. I should be safe. I already have Batman AA for instance.
I should be safe.
/me mops the sweat off of his face with a shaky hand.
Every time the Squeenix complete pack goes on sale it's harder and harder not to buy it. All that Tomb Raider shit, Just Cause 2, Kane and Lynch, and the Hitman games? Plus Rogue Trooper, Project Snowblind, Infernal, and Battlestations Pacific? I've never played any of that and it's all tempting, especially the Hitmen.
But on the other hand that's so much stuff that I'd never have time to play it all.
Given that Batman: AA is a fantastic game, and cheap enough that I can afford to toss it around, I'm taking this opportunity to run a contest.
To Enter: Use MS Paint to create an image designed to make me laugh. I will accept the first 10 submissions, if there are that many, and I'll gift a copy of the game to the picture which makes me laugh the most.
Very subjective, I know, but that's why it's such an awesome contest!
Oh hey, Portal 2 is up for pre-purchase. It comes with a free copy of Portal, but good luck finding someone that still doesn't have it.
I'd like to point out that certain other places gives you skins for the co-op robots if you buy from them and that there's no mention of that on Steam. I'll probably buy straight from Steam any way.

Also don't forget: If you have a PS3, just get it for that system, and you'll automatically get it for the PC.
Yes it is more expensive, but you want to get as much Portal as you can, right?
I had Portal 2 in my cart and was about to go ahead and buy it before I remembered that the PS3 version comes with a free PC copy. Though, maybe not "free" since the PC preorder is $45 and the PS3 version will probably be $60. I'd still like the option to play it on the couch and big tv though.

Hmm, if they do a deal on Front Mission Evolved, I'll probably take it. I know it's crap, but I still want to give it a try at some point. Also, I played FFXI for a while ages ago and seeing it sitting there in the store makes me feel nostalgic. If it wasn't such a nightmarish grindfest, then...

Do you own Just Cause 2?
Because if you don't.
THEN YOU ARE NOT SAFE.
Hah!
Two weeks ago I traveled to the USA for some late winter shopping (My visa had expired and I just got it back on January); One of my "purchases" was always going to a Software Etc or a Gamestop and browse the games selection.
But this was my first USA shopping trip after STEAM.. I have to say I was looking around and not being able to spend anything, thinking "I might be able to buy more games with this money on STEAM during a sale".
I don't anticipate having any trouble with this sale. I have Arkham Asylum, I have Just Cause 2, I (unfortunately) have Front Mission Evolved, always thought Hitman looked kinda cool but I doubt I'd ever actually make time to play it...don't much care about anything else.
Mmmmaaaaaaybe if Thief: Deadly Shadows gets marked down again but something tells me they're only going to hit the bigger, more recent titles.
I am only in danger from The Last Remnant which I want irrationally because the PC version has some issue where it is way easier than the console version (I think that's right) and because I have no goddamned time to play it.
Still, when it's like $5 on Wednesday I'll probably buy it because those are the parameters of my Steam pathology.

Its a bit of a hassle getting it working man. And given your luck with game recently (Deus Ex, TDU 2) I'd say be cautious. That said, there's a crazy texture mod for it that adds alot, it's still not gonna stand up to todays games but it's very good looking.

Works fine for me? That is, I haven't run across any issues running it. Or heard anything.

The Last Remnant isn't in the Squeenix complete pack here in the UK, so that might stop them from putting it on sale for one of the dailies.
Although maybe they'll just give us a different sale in the UK.
And yeah, they changed some of the mechanics so that grinding doesn't cripple you for later game etc.
I'm actually thinking of getting the whole pack, there are two games I'm interested (I already own Batman: AA and Just Cause 2) which are Tome Raider: Guardian of Light (I have heard great things about it, and now I own 2 gamepads) and Front Mission Evolved (Heard horrible things about it, but I'm a sucker for Giant Robots).
One of them is 50 USD and the other 15 USD... And the pack is 75. So I might as well buy the whole pack, get a lot of games and all the JC2 DLC.
Well, I'll follow the standard Steam sale drill and wait until the last day. But for now, I think it's really tempting.

...while my wallet gently weeps.
Wait, what?
Oh Christ, I am not emotionally (or financially) prepared for this.
Well, bring it on I guess. They better have gift packs again!
EDIT: One deal per day? I can handle that. Wow, that Square Enix complete pack is a lot of game for $75.

I already have AA and JC2 so....I don't see much else on that complete list that is enticing.
Maybe they'll have DE:HR for sale to preorder!
Never gonna happen.

Blizzard: Galedrid#1367 - FFXIV: Galedrid Kingshand
