and Front Mission Evolved (Heard horrible things about it, but I'm a sucker for Giant Robots).
That's a good reason not to bother with FME. The giant robot combat is third-person, which hurts the feeling of giant robot stomp-around-ness right off the bat IMO. But even beyond that it feels lot more like wearing a clunky suit of power armor fighting other guys in clunky suits of power armor than it is giant robot combat. There's not much sense of scale and hardly anything in the environments is destructible. Even if the giant robot parts of the game were decent, you'll still have to periodically hop out of your mech and run around with a machine gun for terrible, terrible third-person-shooter levels anyway. You can customize your robot but the system for doing it is tedious and non-intuitive (even painting the damn thing is a pain in the ass) and there's not a lot of balance between different types of builds (hint: don't bother with shotguns).
This probably shouldn't dissuade you from buying the pack for value's sake, but please, please don't go into FME thinking that you'll enjoy it in spite of how awful it is because you like giant robots. FME fails in every way, including as and especially as a giant robot game.
You know what always put me off Sins of a Solar Empire (going back a few pages). It wasn't the gameplay, it was the god awful looking ship models and mechanics.
None of them looked particularly nice, and they had a habit of parking in a location and shooting each other to death. Whoever had the bigger firepower invariably won.
Is it bad that I've survived years of sales on Deus Ex without picking it up on steam... but now the hype train for HR is going to make me buy that the instant they put the games on sale again like they tend to pack the two together

Pretty much. There just wasn't enough 4X to scratch my 4X itch or enough RTS to get my fix there either.
I'll fire it up every once in a while but there just isn't really much there to distinguish itself. From what I understand Sword of the Stars does the real-time 4X thing way better and I personally think that AI War: Fleet Command does an amazing take on RTS meets 4X (among other things). Sins just didn't go deep enough into either genre to really capture my attention. Maybe Sins really shines in multiplayer. I don't really know about that, I've never had the time to really get into a good multiplayer game of Sins.
How the PC version of Arkham Aslum in general? I know it looks better, but is a good PC port?
I own the PS3 version but I am tempted to pick it up on the PC for the graphics. If it was $5 or under I would just buy it, but for $7.50 I am on the fence.

Indeed, it could be the standard for PC ports.
edit: GFWL isn't optional for Batman: AA as far as I know.

Solid port. Controls well with a KBAM, if you have a 5 button mouse they even mapped MB4 and MB5 to useful controls. I don't think I even changed any of the control scheme.
PC version also has some pretty cool PhysX effects (if you're on an Nvidia card), especially on the Scarecrow levels.

My only real memories of it was that I enjoyed it, so it was at least a halfway decent port with no glaring issues.
I also agree with sins of a solar empire, it felt too much like an rts that they were claiming was a 4X, the planets were just your bases.

As a port it's perfectly fine. It runs smoothly and I never had it crash on me once.
Steam says AA needs to connect to GFWL "for online play," so what does that mean? Is it optional?
GFWL will probably mean the difference between a purchase and a pass.
I assume that's for the leaderboards. Which were completely screwed the day the game came out so I wouldn't worry about it. But you do need to remember to make a offline profile if you plan to be without internet access.

I've been replaying it a little bit since I got a new graphics card but I haven't done any of the scarecrow sections over yet. So far the physx has been nice but not mind blowing. Hoping it gets better.
I'm also not noticing a big difference with physx on Metro 2033 either. Had to restart the game because it wouldn't load my cursed station save so I pretty much started fresh with the new card and physx but the difference hasn't been terribly noticable to point.

Given that Batman: AA is a fantastic game, and cheap enough that I can afford to toss it around, I'm taking this opportunity to run a contest.
To Enter: Use MS Paint to create an image designed to make me laugh. I will accept the first 10 submissions, if there are that many, and I'll gift a copy of the game to the picture which makes me laugh the most.
Very subjective, I know, but that's why it's such an awesome contest!
Uuuggghhh, just played europa euniversallis for several hours... now I understand why Queen Isabella threw the dice one Columbus, better to risk 3 ships and some gold on a fools errand than to bump heads again other empires. I had it on easy so I was able to claim hispanica and most of morrocco (heh, forced morro to revolt and split it down the middle in a barbarian state and morroco proper, that was fun). But I swear, someone was fucking with me because I was getting 2 or 3 rebellions at the same time.
Quests are fun too, I need some sleep.... are their more expansion packs beyond Heir to the throne?

I've heard Flotilla is good, although it's actually turn based.
Oh hey, Portal 2 is up for pre-purchase. It comes with a free copy of Portal, but good luck finding someone that still doesn't have it.
I'd like to point out that certain other places gives you skins for the co-op robots if you buy from them and that there's no mention of that on Steam. I'll probably buy straight from Steam any way.
If anyone is out of luck finding someone to gift the extra copy I got the Orange Box for the 360 since I didn´t had a good PC at the time.

There can be a lot of luck involved in this game, as you can very easily get into unwinnable fights every game first fight.
Also the AI is way too good about turning exactly the right direction and distance to absorb all your shots to prevent you from doing any damage, even when you are flanking them with two ships.
Just my opinion though, it's a cool idea, I just felt the execution was kinda sloppy.
The UK price and the US price are exactly the same ($40 / £23.99), so if any US or UK person wants my second copy and can Paypal me money, add me on Steam:
and Front Mission Evolved (Heard horrible things about it, but I'm a sucker for Giant Robots).
That's a good reason not to bother with FME. The giant robot combat is third-person, which hurts the feeling of giant robot stomp-around-ness right off the bat IMO. Well that just plain sucks.
I had just heard the usual "It's too short", "it has sectiosn out of the mech", "it's not really a Front Mission game", so I thought I could at least shoot some Wanzers and have fun.
Sounds like it won't be the case. The again, thanks to these sales, I'm getting enough backlog to wait until FME is sold for like 5 bucks.
.. Hopefully, so I'm now crossing my fingers for some Tomb Raider love.
It is indeed a shame: I was interested in Front Mission Evolved because I want a fast-paced modern mech game with awesome missiles that fly out of your mechanical backpack in all different directions and then home in on your enemy.
But alas! It is crap.
Incidentally, keep those MS Paint contest entries coming in. I've already bought the copy of Arkham Asylum that I'm going to be gifting, but even so I'll probably stop the contest before the next sale rolls around, to give people who don't win a chance to buy the game if they want to.
Can anyone tell me what time the next daily sale will appear in the store, UK time (GMT)?
You have to be kidding me, Arkham Asylum on for $7.50? Goddamnit Steam, stop trying to take all my money.
I've been tempted to hold off for seeing AA on ps3 on clearance somewhere, but I think I'll have to pull the trigger here. Fortunately, I've gotten my ps3 controller working on the pc, so it should be a sufficiently similar experience.
Not sure how the KBaM would work with a game like this. Maybe better, and I'm totally off.

It's different, not better. I've spent a decent amount of time with both options and they both play fine. I personally think playing with a controller is the best way to experience the game but KB&M is absolutely serviceable.

What the Batman folks have done is make sure that KBAM play well, which involves changing and decoupling some functions around versus the controller instead of mapping the buttons 1:1 to the keyboard/mouse and calling a job well done. Even little touches, like the hud being changed to a linear 1-8 bar for equipment instead of remaining a meaningless radial menu.

My only issue with it, is it has NO lasting power after about the third game. You realize how to abuse the ai and you can't loose a match ever. And by then you kind of see all the plot twists too. I really liked it, but it kind of just gets transparent fast.
FINE, I guess I'll pick up B:AA. Probably won't get around to playing it before the end of the year, though.
To be fair, it's unlikely to go much cheaper, and is an absolute steal at this price. I think I got it on sale for like $20 during the Christmas sale after it came out, and it was a steal then. For around 1/3 of that, it's practically an indictable offense.

What's the big deal about having an NVIDIA card? Ooooh, Batman's cape billows more impressively! :P

That was actually a memory I suppressed, but yes, what this guy says too.
Kite in a circle, turn and fire, pick up health pack, kite in a circle, turn and fire, pick up health pack, lather rinse repeat until victory.
It requires GfwL which many here consider to be horrible and is technically DRM.
Its Steam page has it listed as having SecuROM with a 4 machine activation limit.
