Hmmm. I have an issue. I have an impressive collection of UMD RPGs. Most, but not all are for download via the PSN.
The real stickers are mostly Square Enix. Star Ocean 1&2, and KH: Birth By Sleep. Weird that thoses are not there for download...
I also agree that the PSN should have this Party feature, like 2 years ago.

I've heard that cross-game chat is pretty much not going to happen for PS3 though. Mostly because it won't work on a small number (but apparently some big name games), and that they don't want to single those games out. So at least they're going to do it from the start with their new handheld.
I realize it's just a forum post, but yea, seems like a fairly plausible reason as to why we don't have it for PS3.

At the very least the PS3 has had cross-game TEXT Chat for ages. I've used it in Demon's Souls, White Knight Chronicles, and the like when not using Skype or Ventrillo.
In news straight from Shuhei Yoshida (head of SCE World Wide Studios), the PS Vita is NOT being sold at a loss and will be profitable at Day 1. They developed straight for the $250 price point from the begining. And I'm personally pretty sure that using cell phone & tablet hardware technology very much helped in that reguard. Break even (minimal gain or minimal loss) Vita + one game sale + memory card sale = instant profit at system purchace.
Good for Sony. They're learning. And if they're not taking a loss on the Vita it means they can launch the PS4 at full force.
This also really shows just how bloody overpriced the 3DS is. Last teardown estimation I saw listed the components at ~$100.
True. And obviouslly Sony put costs into R&D as well... though oubviouslly less this time as they went with off the shelf (though 2x-4x more advanced than the top of the current market) tech this time arround.
Well - I caved and went back and swapped my PS Fat back in thinking I'd get a 2000 slim instead and just pay the extra $10. Turns out instead of a refurb the guy had just had a used 3000 come in that was immaculate and for the same price. Needless to say, I grabbed it - the screen is fricking beautiful. It does have one stuck pixel, but I can live with that.
It's nice that the 3000 has a better screen, smaller form factor, and faster loads, but most of all the dpad is 1000x better - the fat's dpad was almost impossible to jump diagonally in a fighting game.

Hmmm. I've been thinking. If the PSVita is price pointed correctly, what does that mean for the price of the PS4?
Are they aiming to keep the sucker under $300? Because from the news about how it's going to be built using industry standard hardware and easy to program for...has me thinking Sony's thinking with their heads on this one.
Cant' wait.

Eh, while they won't repeat the "599 US Dollars" fiasco, I doubt they'll debut that low, unless it's at best an incremental jump over the current generation (which would be pretty pointless). My guess is that it'll retail for $400-450, which would be acceptable with a significant performance leap over the current ancient console tech.
The Vita price is a good sign though, even if the name isn't :P
The name's the best part though. It reminds me of a hammer-wielding, magic casting, rushdown flying tank of a Magical Woman smashing through the competition.
For UK people HMV are clearing out of psp products now, and ive seen the 3000 model brand new at £49.99. With the push already for the PSVita under way.
With regards to the price of components the only thing i can see being a real expense is the OLED screen of which I believe Sony have already been using on the digital photo frames.

I had a vision. The perfect game to really use the dual touch screens.
I've been saving up for this like my 12-year-old self used to do since the day I saw the e3 presentation.
Goals:
Day 1 Purchase (will be my personal first ever for a console)
Largest Memory Card
Case
Vita-branded headphones if they've got them (and if they provide some functionality besides "these go in your ears" - ie. mic or something)
Whatever game looks the most awesome (although I'll probably still be playing Valkyria Chronicles)
I haven't decided which model I want yet. It will depend on the region free-ness, and whether I can eventually switch the sim card out and use 3G in America should I move back from Japan.
With the ubiquity of smartphones that now allow for wireless tethering (which I believe is supported by the iPhone and v2.3+ Android devices), the Wi-Fi only version seems like a no-brainer.
What I want to know is how the analog sticks play ball with pockets. I keep having little mini-visions of catching them on my jean pockets as I take the thing out/put it in and damaging the Vita.
I'm pretty much convinced I'll be getting the WiFi-only version, simply because I live in Japan right now but might live in America within the next 1-2 years. If the 3G version is absolutely tied to one country/subscriber (and there's no method for changing, like via SIM card switch or something) then it's not a wise investment. I've never done tethering though, I'm not even sure it's an option with Softbank.
However, I do like the idea of only needing one device when I access the internet on the go. Although I read a report about 3G iPad owners not bothering with the 3G, so I'm going to wait-and-see a little longer.
It seems like every piece of technology that coms out is fighting to be my entertainment hub. My go-to device for every form of media. I can only need so many 3G capable devices.
Hmmm. I've been thinking. If the PSVita is price pointed correctly, what does that mean for the price of the PS4?

The Vita is priced the same as their previous portable though. PSP launched at $250 also.
I don't think anything can be read into the price of the PS4.
I've already put away 17465 yen towards a Vita. I also bought a cheap PSP which I'll flip closer to launch and put that money towards the system as well. It's all too much, too quickly though. Having essentially enough to buy the system (I wasn't sure I'd ever be able to gather up enough, thank you pawn shops) now means it's burning a whole in my pocket. I want news. I want a release date. I want to bang on the windows at Sony and beg them to let me hold one!
Has it been a little while since we've gotten fresh PSVita related news, or is it just me? I don't want to say I'm rabid, but there isn't exactly much to read about regarding the 3DS besides a bajillion ports and shovelware.
I want news too. Specifically, what are some of the questions you still want answered about the Vita? (Anyone who has something to contribute should add their thoughts!)
Here's mine: (I added explanations/background info/my thoughts underneath each question)
1. Will the Vita support two or more PSN accounts being registered to the system?
The PSP can only handle one account at a time. There are some anomolies where the logged in account (which accesses the PS Store) and the authorized account (which determines which games can be played) are different, but you can't just swap from say, a US-region account to a Japanese account and access different PS Stores. Nor can games from multiple PSN accounts be played on a PSP without a slightly annoying authorization process. So I want to know if the Vita will be more like the PSP or the PS3 in this regard.
2. To what extent will the system be region-free?
Someone from Sony Europe said it's probably region free. I'm sure the game cards and downloadable titles will be as well. On the other hand, I'm fairly certain adding funds to a PSN account will continue to be tied to region (unlike in the past where you could add funds even if your IP wasn't based in the same country as the account). I'd like some officially official information about this. Also, I'd like to know if there will be any limits to the region-freeness. For example, a Japanese system can only access the Japanese PS Store (like the DSi).
3. Who is providing 3G in Japan? What will the plan be like?
My guess is Softbank, since they are Japan's AT&T. If they make me sign something lengthy and expensive, however, I'm going to be pretty disappointed.
4. I'm moving! Abroad! Is my 3G Vita useless now?
It's very possible I won't live in Japan for the full console life of the Vita. I want to get a 3G model because WiFi is much more limited here than in the US. However, if my wife and I move to America, will I be able to swap SIM cards and continue using the 3G capabilities?
What kind of official accessories will be out around release? And how much are those new memory cards?
I'm in the market for headphones (and considering the features of Vita, ones with a mic installed) and I plan on getting the
I find this lack of news disturbing, especially since it's supposed to be releasing this holiday season.

Naw. it's pretty typical really. Expect the big news rush to hit in September. They're timing it for the Holiday rush. Too much info and you risk causing your Spin to die down.
Yeah, it's not particularly surprising. The month or two after E3 are usually pretty quiet on all fronts. GamesCom is next month, so I'd expect news to start hitting around then, with TGS following it in September.
Oh and nice questions, astronautcowboy, I've been wondering about a few of them myself. I think we can expect the same kind of PSN locking though, Sony just don't seem to get it yet. Hopefully at one point they will, and we'll see a more centralised, consumer-friendly approach.
I don't necessarily have anything against Sony for region-locking credit cards, although I wish they would allow you to specially authenticate your account (like Steam does). However, the 1 system, 1 account thing needs to die.
Really? I felt like we knew everything about the Wii, 360, 3DS, and PS3 well before release. Not two months until release.
The 3DS? Yeah, I think your memory might be playing up. I mean, even now do we have the systems specs? A quick look at the wiki tells me we don't. It was kinda weird how little we knew about the system even a few weeks from launch.
What info are you looking for anyway? I feel like we know almost everything about the system at this point (apart from the above, relatively minor, questions), I just want them to talk about more games. Plenty of developers have hinted at titles but few have been announced, which makes me believe the rumour that Sony is purposefully holding back announcements. I guess they could be planning on spacing announcements out to build momentum into the launch but it's kinda strange, I can't really think of any other launches that've done anything similar. Usually they try throw everything out at once to build initial hype, then rely on that hype sustaining itself (which is probably where Nintendo went wrong with the 3DS, especially with that launch lineup).
And yeah, astronaut, the solo account on PSP is a pain in the ass. Even before I started buying PS1 and PSP games on my US account, I'd run into troubles just trying to play a US demo. It was one of the contributing factors to me just not using my PSP at all.
What I'd like to see is them just outright copying Steam. One store, with a consistent layout (instead of the inane crap they've got now) but displaying different products based on the users IP/selected country. That way, it should be pretty easy to add gifting functionality and there wouldn't be any need for multiple accounts. I want Xenogears? I just paypal someone in the US money and they gift it to me. Boom, done. But the current layout is just horrible, horrible design and as far as I can tell, they're all run fairly poorly.
Whether or not it's actually coming out this Holiday season or really anything about it.
The current talk from Sony seems to be pretty solidly "Japan this year, everywhere else early next year" though of course that could change.
And we do know a fair bit about Vita... though many of the things we know about raise further questions. It has 3G... but what are they doing to make 3G desirable? That kind of thing.
Damn mentally I was going to buy this at Christmastime and move all my PSP games to it.
Philippe about the tactical deployment of german Kradschützen during the battle of Kursk:
"I think I can comment on this because I used to live above the Baby Doll Lounge, a topless bar that was once frequented by bikers in lower Manhattan."
Near is like the Nintendo 3DS' SpotPass. It's "a location-based gifting system", according to Sony Europe manager of R&D, Phil Rogers.
"What Near does is it allows users to discover each other, leave gifts for each other and essentially find out more about games. You can see where people are in relation to your location, their five most recently played games and also gifts that they've registered. This is fairly cool because it exposes users to games they might not have heard of and you can see how popular those games are and how people are rating them," explained Rogers at the Develop Conference 2011.
Near's gifts don't settle in one place, "unlike another platform" - they follow you around as you "go about your daily life". Near allows one 100KB gift box per game. Boxes can contain multiple gifts but can't exceed the 100KB binary data size limit.
Rogers painted a verbal picture: "Imagine user A visits locations one to ten through that day, and they get home and sync with the server and it uploads to the Near server your ten locations that you've been to.
"User B comes along, does the same thing, but at some point in User B's day they passed User A's location five, which means they're now able to collect gifts that that user's dropped. That comes into the Near application and then in-game they pick up those gifts."
You can specify how many times a gift is picked up, how available it is from your daily locations in terms of relative distance, how long a gift lasts for, who can access the gift and the probability of finding it. A rare item might only be discovered by one in 100 people.
Gifts can be more than simple items. "You can gift challenges," said Rogers, who used the example of a gift that challenges someone in WipEout, offering possible rewards if successful. You can even gift in-game items: "You could have a rare ship and you could drop that and someone could collect that by using Near," revealed Rogers.
Rogers said there will be functionality to write to a gift-giver and say thank you.
Party is "really good for having friends together to discuss games, chat about them and get into them", Rogers declared.
As on Xbox Live, Party is "platform-wide" and allows you and three friends to form a party that sticks together regardless of what you do on Vita. "You can chat across games through text and voice," explained Rogers.
"Cross-game voice chat," he reiterated, "it's there and it's on Vita."
You can also launch Vita games from within Party and your friends there can click a button and quickly join you.
"You can have different Party groups for different games or genres," expanded Rogers. "Maybe you've got a first-person shooter group that you can all chat and go into.
"The voice chat part you can override," he added, "so if in-game you've got your own teams for audio then you can override the Party chat and turn that off."
Party is integrated with friends lists but isn't compulsory for all games to include. "Games can choose not to," said Rogers.
LiveArea and Activity: "The LiveArea is essentially where you go to launch your PlayStation Vita day," Rogers beamed.
There are three modes in LiveArea: Index, Live and Game. The top area you'll see is the content information zone, which is the "landing point for when you start any game on PS Vita". The communication zone is where you "comment on people's activities within the game as well as publish your messages".
"Activity is a way for players to discuss progress," explained Rogers. "The system automatically puts a few activities in there," he added, such as Trophies and ratings. "That encourages people to then comment similar to Facebook style."
LiveArea can be updated by developers and publishers. "When you ship the game it's got the standard LiveArea that you bake into the game card," said Rogers. But through updates "you can even customise it to the user" by pushing out different data.
Publishers can also "push data to users" by putting images on the LiveArea frontpage as well as announcements on the bottom part of the logo. "It's a good way to push DLC," said Rogers. "So there's new levels out, click, go to the Store." It's also a good way to push news about the game. But Rogers offered a word of warning to publishers that "it's important not to spam users too much and to use it sensibly".
LiveArea also has location features and allows pubs/devs to track Vita owners "either by GPS on the 3G model or triangulation of mobile phone cells".
"As well as that we work with Skyhook and they provide wireless access points around to keep a general idea of where you are," elaborated Rogers. "So even with the Wi-Fi-only SKU you can still have a vague concept of where the user is."
Exactly how developers will use all these different features, Sony doesn't appear to know. "We're generally open to innovation," admitted Rogers.
Hopefully turning off cross game chat will only be for rare, unique games like Demon's Souls and Journey.

I have very similar questions myself. When the recently-announced MHp3rd DL version comes out, I want to be able to play it on Vita without having to change accounts.
I'm also wondering if now's the time to get a PSP Go. Once the P3rd download version is out, I will have all the titles which matter (Monster Hunter) as downloads. I have held a unit myself and it is more comfortable than the x000-series, plus it has PS3 controller support. I'm also not planning to get a Vita until the ~$200 price point at most. On top of everything else, I have a good amount of credit with Amazon which I could potentially put toward a Go.
I suppose what I'm having difficulty deciding is whether the price vs remaining supply is at its most opportune point, and whether or not to buy used at about half the cost or new at about $110.
Edit: Took a bit of a chance and ordered one used in "Very Good" condition, in original box with all accessories and an additional 8GB micro-memory stick. Came to just under $70. Hopefully it will be alright.
