So maybe you've heard of this company called Apple, and they make this thing called an iPhone, and this other bigger thing, called an iPad
And they're probably working on new versions of those
right now
both of'em run iOS now at version 4, where they added a bunch of stuff, but most importantly, multitasking*
So there's all kinds of apps you can buy in Apple's App Store
GAMES
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES
A huge hit on the PC/Mac, tower defense style funtimes, made even more fun with a touch interface. Available on iPhone/Touch and a separate iPad 'HD' version.
iPhone -
iPad -
CUT THE ROPE
Fun puzzle game where your objective is to feed Om Nom some candy. Harder than it sounds, when you've got spikes, greedy spiders, and all manner of other puzzley goodness in your way.
iPhone -
iPad -
WORDS WITH FRIENDS
Scrabble clone. Watch out for Sheri and DHS Odium.
DEAD SPACE
Yeah, that Dead Space. Apparently one of the best games currently out there for iOS.
iPhone -
iPad -
PRODUCTIVITY / TASK MANAGEMENT
Omnifocus - the Rolls Royce of Mac task management stuff, the OmniGroup charges some serious dough for their apps, though those who use them swear by'em. To get the whole kit (iPhone, iPad, and Mac) versions you're gonna be looking at dropping at least $100 total.
iPhone -
iPad -
Todo
Another task management app. Online syncing, GTD style lists, contexts, tags, etc.
iPhone -
iPad -
Evernote
Billed as an 'external brain' where you can keep all the crap you want to keep track of. Use it however you work, has a solid desktop app as well. Free with a premium subscription available. Store photos (with text recognition) audio, video, text, etc.
iPhone/iPad -
ARTS
BRUSHES
It's a paint app, been used to create some pretty impressive stuff, including covers of major magazines.
iPhone -
iPad -
READING
Flipboard
A smart magazine that pulls in articles, photos, video, etc from your social networks and RSS into a clean, magazine-style layout. The video explains better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2vpvEDS00o
iPad -
Instapaper
Parses out the relevant text of a page, article, etc as well as some of the important images (like photos with a news article, but not the bullshit ads) It strips it down to basic text, but keeps in things like italics, bold, links etc. Super super easy interface for reading long-form stuff. And as Shaz said, you can send it to iPad, iPhone, Kindle, etc. A number of other apps support it, such as Twitter for iPhone, Reeder [an RSS reader] so if you're on the twitter and somebody tweets a link to an article you want to check out later, you can shoot it straight to Instapaper for safe keeping. There's also the web-browser bookmarklet, and
Cortex for Chrome
iPhone/iPad-
SOCIAL NETWORK CRAP
Twitter, Facebook, blah blah. I'll add more to this later.
GameCenter is sort of vaguely like XBL for iOS. See what your friends are playing, see who has more cheevos, and even get your multiplayer on. Some games even have voice chat!
GameCenter Usernames:
smarthero - smarthero
stareosarus - stareosarus
sheri - sherib626
tankhammer - tankhammer
Words With Friends Usernames:
smarthero - smarthero
stareosarus - stareosarus
crwth - with an ito
sheri - sherib626
DHS Odium - Odium
Okay so what apps/games do you use? Are you a hater, or do you bow before the mighty Jobs?

oh yeah and dropbox
Special trick for other Mac users: hit Control+Option+Command+8.
Trip out and enjoy.
There's an app for that.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
NFL 2011 is pretty fun.
even though there will be nowhere that uses it here in MS

What's really awesome [in an utterly nerdy sense] is that Dropbox's API is open enough that a number of pretty cool apps use it for syncing, storage, etc rather than going through iTunes and Apple's janky sync setup.
I love APoD
I own a sony MP3 player.
It's a nice little thing with a bit of a weak processor.
apple hardware is pretty legit though, wish they'd make a 32+ gig nano
is it a cool thingy?
I wanted one.
seriously. such a damn bloated thing.
wish they had a separate App Store application because I never use iTunes-proper.
my favourite app is Star Walk

they don't even show the basic functionality of it in this. Which is you grab your phone, point it at the sky to "look through the screen" at whatever is behind it, and it names and identifies every object you're seeing. Look all around the sky and even through the ground and it moves with you.
It is
so
good.
And only 3 bucks.

Word Lens.
iTunes is power hungry, sure
but I have never once come across a program that works as well or is as intuitive
I have basically tried everything, too.
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
Can anyone recommend a good text editor for the iPhone that syncs with dropbox? I've been trying to use plaintext but I have massive syncing issues.
Also what is a very simple picture editor that is free? I don't need anything fancy.

I picked up LogMeIn Ignition while it was on sale a couple years ago. TeamView is nice, but LogMeIn's super-ease of use, plus the option to upgrade to one their paid plans sold me on it. I'd love to use it at work but our off-site IT support folks use a version of it so I can't use my personal account.

i dunno about the store but anything related to the ipod nano or even slightly complex music management is annoying as hell
and 'authorization' can fuck right off to hell

It's okay for being a netbook. Has trouble with Flash and Chrome OS isn't very useful outside of web browsing.
It only has a VGA output, Speaker/Headphone Jack, 1 USB port, and an SD Card Slot. Has a built camera and mic like most products of its ilk. Also has Bluetooth.
WiFi, 3G or a USB to LAN adapter are the only ways to get on the internet. Without Internet while using Chrome it is pretty much useless.
I found it strange that it came with a 16GB SSD because there really isn't much you can do with the Space. Windows and Chrome both start pretty fast due to the SSD, though.
It's matte black and feels almost like rubber. I really like that aspect of it. On the lowest energy settings I am getting like 7 or 8 hours out of the battery. Around 4 or 5 with the brightness turned up all the way. The built in speakers is not very good.
I do like the touch/clickpad. The function keys in Chrome are nice. The next page/tab button doesn't work, though.
It weighs a few pounds and doesn't get very hot. The stickers it came with are goofy looking. My niece pasted them on the walls.
Installing a Bios and different OS wasn't hard. Just have to have access to internet in order to do it.
edit:
Also from the few minutes I played it Super Meat Boy ran fine at 1280x800.

Find My Phone is free (became free with 4.2, actually, if I remember correctly)
Ooooo. Right.
I believe there's a tethered jailbreak available, and maybe an untethered one?
try http://greenpois0n.com/
But I still want to jailbreak. Which is why I have not upgraded yet.

today I finally set up an older mac mini in the living room, to use as a music server. it's all hooked up to my receiver and big vintage speakers, with the itunes libraries of all the other laptops and PCs in the apartment streaming to it. and I can control it all from my phone with itunes remote.
feels good to live in the future.

You have to take the battery out, remove the ten screws underneath it, remove the two rubber pieces towards the back of the Cr-48, and then remove the two screws inside of the holes.
Then you have to pop the bottom of the case off. Starting where the VGA is, then around the front where the touchpad is, then over to the other ports.
Once that's off you have to find the little white switch. That's for developer mode. It's to the right of the battery leads or whatever they're called. Flip it towards the battery thing.
After that plug the power cable in. Lay the netbook on the back side of the monitor. Then turn it on. You'll come to a recovery screen. Hit CTRL+D to boot into developer mode. It will have to erase some stuff when you do that. It should take a few minutes. After that's done it will boot into Chrome again. It will be the welcome screen you saw when first used.
Make sure you're connected to your WiFi. Hit CTRL-ALT-F2. F2 is the Forward key. That will open up a shell. Type in Chronos and hit enter. After that is done type this in without the quotes "wget bit.ly/run-luigi && sudo bash run-luigi". It will download a Bios. Then you can install that. Choose to flash to the custom firmware. I believe it's the option for "1".
After that's done you'll be set to do whatever you want. Hit F2 as soon as you start to check out the Bios. F10 let's you choose to boot from a USB device. I just made an ISO and the used Windows USB/DVD tool to make a bootable flash drive.
You can install Mac OS or Linux as well. There are drivers available on W7 for everything but the 3G stuff.
I'm not entirely certain you can dual boot Chrome OS with the other OS's. You have to do the Flash again, most likely with a Linux boot disk and reflash it back to stock firmware. The you have to run a Chrome OS recovery via USB drive or SD.
You have to make sure the bottom of the case is off or it will mess up the flash and you'll have to run the Chrome OS recovery. Some kind of protection they have built in that messes it up when the bottom is on.
I have an iPad and I don't use it too terribly much, which is a good sign I won't use an iPhone that much either.
But I will eventually get one just for the sake of internet access in remote areas.
