With my incoming tax return, I'm considering grabbing a PS3. I already have a 360 and a fairly significant backlog of games waiting to be played.
Two of the people I regularly game with already have PS3s. They've convinced another of my buddies, who is buying one at this very moment. They're all going to be playing DC Universe online, which looks intriguing to me, but I don't know if I'm willing to stick with it after the free month.
I tend toward shooters and action games. I don't usually like RPGs (except Bioware stuff) and I don't play sports games. I usually prefer multiplayer games, since it helps me hang out with my closest friends, who all either live a half hour to an hour away or are really busy with work/school during the week.
I also do not yet own a Blu Ray player.
Those of you with PS3s, can you give me any compelling reasons to jump on the bandwagon? I can tell you off the bat that I am really interested to play the Uncharted games, and God of War looks fun also.
Uncharted is certainly a lot of fun. I only own a PS3 as a current console and I purchased it mainly as a blu-ray player, and that's still what I mostly use it for. The selection of PS3-only games is solid, and having a choice between a 360 or PS3 for a new game would be helpful, I'm sure.
If you think you would play it for the games, you'll find there's a solid stable of things you'll enjoy, and the online support is decent and free. But if you have an HD tv, you'll also find a lot to like about blu-ray (in my opinion), unless you don't really care about picture quality.
There are also some great exclusive downloadable games on the PS3, like the PixelJunk series (PixelJunk Shooter is my favorite) and Flower. I don't really turn my PS3 on very often, but I do not regret buying it at all.
Yup, having blu-ray is pretty sweet. Movies look really good. Like, really really good.
Plus, there are good exclusives now. God of War is awesome. If you haven't played the first 2, they have been updated to 1080p for the PS3 and are sold in a combo pack. The first Uncharted was fun, haven't played the second yet, but supposedly its awesome. You could convince your friends to buy LittleBigPlanet and play that. There are other games.
I don't always use my PS3 a ton for games but I really like it for bluray and streaming Nexflix. Even though I don't play a bunch of games, I don't regret buying it at all. I've had it for about a year now and I still kind of wish I had bought one sooner.
On a side note, DCUO is pretty fun and it plays more like an action fighting game than a traditional MMO or rpg.
Yes, with the 360 you have to be a gold memeber to Netflix and the PS3 you do not! So even though we have one of each the PS3 is our Netflix box.
Along with this, I prefer the search and menu setups on the PS3 to my 360. The PS3 setup will also offer additional suggestions based on whatever it is you are currently looking at in the menu. It's a neat little feature that has sucked me into watching some stuff that I didn't know they had on Netflix.

The most one-of-a-kind multiplayer experience on the PS3 is Demon's Souls. People can help you beat the game, or you can invade others' games and kill them, or have others invade yours.

Oh thank god, I thought I was going to have to be the first one to mention it. It's kinda shameful it took 15 posts to be mentioned even.
Get a PS3, and get Demon's Souls. It's Fucking Awesome (TM).
Also, Infamous is good, Little Big Planet 2 is good, MAG is pretty good. Heavy Rain is pretty spectacular.
Oh, and arguably the best version of Portal 2 to buy will be the PS3 version. Cross-platform multiplayer with computer folks AND a free copy of the computer version. Not a bad deal.
Oh, and the Move isn't a complete piece of shit, unlike the Kinect. I've used the Move with MAG, Heavy Rain, and RUSE, and all have been enjoyable experiences.
I own a ps3 and love it but I don't think the value is quite there if you already own a 360. Do you really want to spend $300 to play dcuo for a month? Uncharted, god of war, little big planet, those exclusive shooters they are all good games but I just can't see spending that kind of money to play them (especially when you already have a backlog). Unless you are looking for a nice blue-ray player i guess. All that said I am sitting besides a gaming PC that cost a couple thousand so I am really in no place to lecture you about spending money on the hobby.
Can anyone with both a 360 and PS3 tell me if there's any difference between the two in terms of Netflix?
Netflix on the PS3 has much better audio and video quality, assuming the rest of your hardware supports it: the PS3 version has full 5.1 surround sound (compared to 2.1 on the 360), and streams at 1080p (the 360 only does 720p). Pixels and I had been using our 360 for Netflix for years, but when his parents gave us a PS3 for Christmas, we switched over and noticed a significant improvement. It's also fantastic being able to rent Blu-Rays from Redbox for a buck fifty per night.
I guess it also plays games too? That's pretty cool, I guess. We've been too busy watching Netflix to bother playing any, though.

Since the PSN doesn't cost more, I'd go it. I might hesitate if you had to pay for both. Which system do more of your friends have?
With Netflix being cheaper (no Gold), and better, plus the other features, it's a good deal. Move is pretty great, some awesome PSN games for it and the We Move Sports that comes with it got us playing bocce ball here. bocce ball.
As far as multiplayer goes, it really does come down to what your friends have. But in every other way I like my PS3 better than I liked my 360. The only specific thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet, and this is a bit silly, is that games that are split into 2 discs on the 360 are only 1 on the PS3.
I have both a 360 and a PS3, and I love the PS3. Shooter and action games, you're covered pretty well - even if you only deal in exclusives.
Infamous
Uncharted and Uncharted 2
God of War 3
Killzone 2 (and 3 coming soon)
MGS 4
And then there's the multiplat stuff that you can play with your friends:
COD: Black Ops
Borderlands
AssCreed: Bro
And the online is free so even if you pay for Live you're not shelling out for a similar service on PS3. And it's a great BluRay player.
The only thing I don't like about it is the default controller. It's worth it to invest in a $5 set of trigger caps to make the DS3 loads better. Also, if you have a bluetooth headset for your phone, it probably will work with your PS3 so you may not have to buy another one just for that.

I was half-listening to G4 Feedback podcast mentioning that. Is that still a thing? Are there a lot of games on 2 discs?

Not many, but there are enough high profile ones to make it a thing people notice. Mass Effect 2, FF XIII, and Dead Space 2 are all examples.
Do you guys think there will be a price drop this year? I dont do that much gaming but Im interested in some ps3 exclusives and with e3 around the corner I think I could easily wait.

Lost Odyssey was on 4. It felt like I was playing PS1 again.

I should have said that the three I listed are 2 discs on 360 and one on PS3.

Thanks. Yeah, I've got a PS3, so didn't know how many 360s were like that.
And about a price drop, I would find that very unlikely. Anything of course is possible, but the Slim just came out in 2009. They'll probably be some nice bundles when the NGP comes out, trying to get people to buy both.
If you get something like play on you can stream lots of stuff through your PS3 or 360. It's not the only media server like that, it's just the one I'm familiar with.
Edit: Lots of stuff includes Hulu. I guess that might not have been obvious.

Are there any big multiplayer games on the PS3 that aren't cross-platform (like CoD)?

MAG (Though I would wait for MAG 2 at this point!) , Resistance (?) , Killzone.

How do I setup Hulu on the PS3? Do i have to download it from the store?
Critical Failures - Havenhold Campaign • August St. Cloud (Human Ranger)
This is something I was wondering as well. Theres the Hulu Plus application at the store, but I dont have hulu plus so...can i even use it?
Edit: Lots of stuff includes Hulu. I guess that might not have been obvious.
Mmm, $300 gaming headphones.
Yes you have to have Hulu plus, but I think you get to try it for like a week before you'd have to pay for it.
