So, I live in Queensland in Australia. A few weeks ago, we had torrential rains, causing flash flooding across a good portion of the state and giving us delightful footage such as this:

About 75% of the state was declared a disaster zone. Supplies were cut off to the Far North and west inland due to wrecked roads and flooded bridges. This week, we got hit by Cyclone Anthony, which was only a Category 2 cyclone, and did minimal damage.

But the real monster is approaching, and fast:

This is Cyclone Yasi, and it's bigger than Papau New Guinea. It is 300km wide and has 240km/h winds. Its projected path puts it right on course for Cairns, in Far North Queensland. I live in Atherton, about 80km away. This is a Category 4 right now. It's projected to be worse than Cyclone Larry, which hit us in 2006.

It's gonna pass right over the top of us and possibly break up in the middle of the Northern Territory.

I spent this morning boarding up all the thin windows in the house and clearing the yard of debris that could be turned into missiles. We've got to somehow find somewhere to park the second car that has no shelter, so it doesn't get scratched the fuck up and/or windows blown out by debris.

When Larry hit us, it completely stripped a paperbark tree and threw a 5m wide tree across our yard.

Just a cancelled a day business trip because we had 5" of snow overnight here and there's freezing rain at my destination.

A blizzard hit Chicago overnight giving them up to 24" by tomorrow which is the heart of a 2,000 mile long snowstorm stretching from Oklahoma City all the way through the North East.
