New expansion comes out -> Play team games with friends "Hey this is fun" -> Assholes figure out all the broken shit "Fuck this game" -> Maybe 1v1 is more balanced? -> Beat up scrubs for a while -> "No Dreadnought don't sync kill that guy, now the missile squad can get away and kill you noooo" -> Quit until the next expansion
Actually I'm impressed with how fast patches are coming out now, if that keeps up and we get a global nerf to Global AoEs then we're golden.
Well the chief barrier to fast patching in the first place was GFWL, which they've dropped. So yeah, we're likely to see much more timely patching when issues hit.
Also: I just noticed that the chat channel listing not only has a standard bunch of channels, but also lists out the channels for all the groups you're a member of. Pretty awesome, that even one-ups Left 4 Dead's implementation since there you need to bring up the overlay to get to Armadeadon.
Although if we ever start using chat channels, I suggest we just use the standard Penny Arcade group channel. We're always making groups for games just to use the chat channels, and then all those groups get abandoned after a while, which just makes them pointless. Meanwhile the main PA channel never gets used for anything.
does anyone still play last stand? i had lots of fun with it, but now any time i play i get someone with 300+ ping and makes it unplayable after the game just sort of freezes. it slows down a lot already, but that is just like

That could just be because a lot of the regular DoW2 players are currently doing the Retribution multiplayer beta instead right now.
If I remember correctly they didn't have the MS certification in the dow 2 vanilla beta either. Should be noticing the difference the most post-release

while this is probably true, i was like this before the retribution beta started.
Then I don't know. I presume more people will hop online with Last Stand again when Retribution hits, since it's got a new hero and a new, harder arena.
Also, The Last Stand was always hell for ping / lag even in its heyday.
Though that could have been GFWL just as much as anything else.
Actually, thinking about it now, I run into tons of players with absolute crap systems even in the Retri Beta with ranked & custom games.
One fellow took so long to load the game I was getting very tempted to ALT+F4 out, and I'm usually a very patient person.
I had one of those was wondering if I could just sign out of Steam and that'd take me out of the lobby and save myself from waiting.
In general I find loading times for myself a little faster than before, but occasionally a map will take ages to load where before things were loading fine, and I don't really know why. They mention a bugfix to do with some map loading times in the 3.7 notes, so maybe that's it.
well, i don't have the most awesome system, but it isn't bad. it is 3 or 4 years old. but i load pretty fast with every other game. DOW2 just feels a little slow on my system anyways.
The match I'm talking about had a literal 5-10 minutes of loading.
I'm not talking about a 2 or 3 minute load that feels like it is taking forever, but an actual 5-10 minute load.
Kinda like some games where someone drops but the game spends the next 10 minutes halted while it tries to ping them, and you cannot kick them because it cant connect to them to tell them that they are kicked.

Had that happen to me twice. Usually I'm one of the first to load in group games, but this one time it was beyond horrible: First it took ages to get to the loading screen (the rest of the people were there already,) then it took ages to start and finish loading.

That's what I was talking about as well. The guy was loading for maybe 5 minutes, not sure what was happening.
that is pretty terrible. i should try this game in actual multi. you guys meet in the steam group? also, will i be able to play with folks who have retribution if i don't? since i don't have the money to grab it right now.
So fun bug today while playing some retribution. I was had my heretics in a line of guard and popped my explode ability. Instead of blowing up one heretic, it blew up the squad. Did suppress the enemy but not much use when I lost the entire squad to do it.
Also, how are you guys dealing with entrenched guard? Another game, my ally let the enemy guard player entrench on a victory point. About 5 to 6 turrets spread out so they could cover each others blind spots, 2 bunkers that reinforced and just a whole bunch of guard. Thing chewed my army so fast when I stumbled upon it that I barely had time to retreat. We ended up just giving up that point completely and worked on grabbing/holding the other two.
Feldron: Ret is in beta, if you own a DoW you can play in the beta right now. Should be in steam games menu, just download it.

That's pretty much what you should do. At least until you get something heavy enough to crack the defences. Depending on the situation that could just be unsuppressable AV, like Terminators, Wraithguard, or a tank, or all the way to a super unit, maybe plus a Global in order to scare his infantry forces away first.
Really if he's devoted a tonne of resources to defending a point, let him stay in his entrenched position, he's probably not going to have the resources mount an effective offence elsewhere. It's usually an all-in strategy. Flow around him, take other points, back-cap, gen harass etc. If you can flank behind him, take one out and attack him from a turret blind spot causing a retreat, then so much the better, and that'll be the opening you want.
The only other possible option is to try and whittle away at his position with some form of long range unit, Plasma Devs, Manticore etc. Usually not too effective though.
Of course in the game where my team mates let that happen, they entrenched at our natural VP. And my team mate opted to respond by pumping out three manticores and trying to play artillery wars.

Chaos: upgraded Noise Marines, Bloodcrusher/Bloodletters

well, i thought i had to pre-order to get into beta, i mean, i plan to get retribution eventually, just not right away.
i suppose i should look into that. though, i still only can get on to play at between 8 and 9 PST. and my wife hates when i get into any sort of multi game where i can't just walk away if needed. i dunno, multi seems fun though.

Last week yeah but now they opened it up to everyone.
After a somewhat rubbish night I've come to the following conclusions. 1. I'm frustratingly utterly rubbish at this game. 2. Matchmaking is better, but still utterly crap for 3v3.
Seriously, had a game 2v1 (down from 3v3) and still lost even when up against 2 AI.

Welcome to Dawn of War 2 Retribution! Where you now have a new influx of players, particularly in 3v3 who camp the middle, don't respond to help calls and while you're kicking ass in your quadrant, they don't have a clue how to play. You come up top, help them but low and behold, the player you were beating now is back with a full army and a Swarmlord and you're out of resources from trying to fight two players on your own while your teammates scratch their asses and watch.

Ahh, this sounds all too familiar. Throw in alot of games where you're the only one building power, and thus sacrificing any potential for an army large enough to deal with all you have to, and you're spot on the money.

Let's not forget these teammates are spamming Guardsmen and Shootas ALL GAME LONG, as if they're some super everything counter. One teammate may occasionally pull out a walker or transport, and lead a tiny, curious assault on a VP, but when his walker or transport is blown up, he retreats his entire army and cautiously moves back to camping a single power generator node.
Oh, and your IG ally is building lasgun turrets all over said node. Not two or three, but six or eight that are forming a tight little circle.
If you mean problems like a fucking baneblade running me down or watching my army evaporate to instant hit maticore shots. Then yes. Otherwise, guard is tasty.
Finally got back into this after like, a year. I was never very good mind, but now my friends have decent computers so we've been playing this on evenings. So the question I pose to you: Fucking cultists, how do they work?
I'm playing Eldar and I usually build a banshee squad right off the bat, but of course the cultist just go boom and my shees, who already fall over when looked at strongly have to retreat. If I go guardians, they just run up and the same thing happens. My warlock is usually tying up a squad of CSM or the commander.
I usually have a handle on most other races' early game (fine, sluggas tend to ruin my day, but still), but Chaos eludes me.
Cultists are one of the most annyoing units in the game, and very strong melee counters... especially on banshees.
Its good to see you're playing the warlock cause hes great for killing cultists. Get good with the destructor blast, and you'll be able to almost onehit cultists with it.
Without practice you should be able to knock off 30-50% of their health with it. Fire from your guardians should be able to knock off enough more to force a retreat, and be ready to drop a grenade just in front of your guardians to prevent them from engaging.
So not entirely related to Retribution, but I didnt want to necro the vanilla DOW2 thread.
I just got the collectors pack (thru Steam, great deal, as I've played the demos to death.) and am wondering how do I link my Steam purchase to Games For Windows, so I can get my sweet, sweet cheevos? If this is even possible.
Also, as I am fairly new to the series, would I get absolutely slaughtered in multi? Or are there some general tactics that would save my ass? Or should I just not touch multi and save my sanity?

It's already intergrated with GFWL; first time you boot up it should ask for you to long on your GFWL account.

Ah thats cool then.... I've really only played around with DoW1 and havent jumped into the 2nd one yet.
Yeah, cultist are kind of the main stay of my army. So much so I am using alpha legion colors. They are a great counter to most things if you can get them in. Also great at knocking squads like hbs out of cover if they have grenades. But with out a ascending champ they are super super squishy.
One eldar I played though was smart about it. He would run up, tap my cultist a few times with guardians and then run away with fleet and if I wasn't paying attention he would drag them into a suppression field and then murder them. They have no anti-suppression ability so getting suppressed can be a death sentence so you might want to grab that.
Also if you are in tier 2 or 3 and fighting chaos and you see the symbols under the feet of the demons your trying to smush, probably will be easier to find smush the worshiping cultist who are constantly healing said demons and buffing them. Last game, I was able to take a guard bunker which had the reinforcement upgrade, hide a group of cultist just behind it worshiping while my other cultist, plague marine and one csm squad cleaned up twice their numbers worth of guard. Between worship heals, plague marine heal ability and reinforce from the bunker I basically came out of the fight at 100%. And would of have been close if he killed my cultist worshiping since I would probably had to retreat my hq and a few other units soaking the damage.
Taking enemy IG bunkers is fun (unless they had the foresight to booby-trap them :P) as I love the chance of turning enemy assets against them (favorite part of CoH multi as well; I'm probably guilty of picking up a lot of things I didn't even need, or could fit into my army just because I could)
Something I noticed is that if I have taken an IG bunker that hasn't been upgraded, I can choose and pay for an upgrade, even if I'm not IG. A great asset if I'm playing a faction that doesn't have much in on the field reinforcement (like Chaos or Swarmlord-less Tyranids) or whose repairing units tend to be a bit too squishy to replace with a new squad past T1 when they all die, unless something comes up where I need them (like Orks or SM) not to mention a building to load up a supression team in what is hopefuly a tacticly important position.

Do I have to register on their site for it? Because then I'll just wait until I buy to play. I don't need to waste more time registering with another community I won't be a part of.

Well fuck me, I cannot find a fucking counter for Eldar against a half decent IG player.
They just Sentinal my early banshees / guardians, then plop down their 180* turrets next to the VP / Chokepoint / my fucking power farm. And there is not a fucking thing I can do against them.
By the time I have enough power to counter the turret + sentinal, they have some Catachans out to finish me off.
It is worse than playing Eldar v Ork, since with Ork there is a good chance you can stall until T2, no such fucking luck vs IG.
