That article, the comments....i've never seen so many people point their combined hatred toward one persons opinion all at once like that before. There is not one comment in that space that is not ripping on the article and the writers complete ignorance.
I have to agree with an above poster, in saying "what was the point of that article to begin with?" It really looks like hes an ignorant gears fanboy ripping on a lore and franchise that is beloved by probably the majority of gamers, even the non tabletop ones.
If you're a baseball fan who reads analysis sites, this stuff happens all the time.
I almost feel bad for Dean but he really did kick dirt in the face of a sleeping giant.
One of the commenters pointed out the derivatives that both properties have and the way they collide when they inhabit the same medium. It seems to me that the line between something like table top games and video games are definitely blurring, right down to visual and narrative style. Heck when I first saw Warmachine, my first question was "So when is somebody going to license or steal the concept for a video game".
Honestly the new last stand items for the paid DLC sounded neat and interesting. But they are like new shiny shovels in an overused, half-full sandbox. There's just not enough last-stand levels/maps to get me really interested in the new wargear enough to buy it. Doing the same level for the 40th item with a new rocket pistol just... doesn't appeal to me.
edit: New levels as paid DLC would be interesting. I'd be much more interested in purchasing something like that. It does run the risk of cutting your user base into pieces. I'd hate to buy a new shiny level and then never get to play with my friends on it. It might then starve old levels because everyone's playing different levels now. Granted, I doubt the starvation would be too much of a problem...
I'd pay 10 bucks for a really difficult mini-campaign to test my skills, but I could care less about LS DLC.
That actually sounds like a really cool idea.
They've created a bunch of really interesting abilities and fun things in their singleplayer campaign. I found retribution incredibly easy as a whole though. Disappointingly so.
New levels that could use campaign characters... with Co-op support? High levels of difficulty? That sounds genuinely intriguing. Maybe throw in special wargear rewards if you complete them.
Valkyria Chronicles did DLC like that. It had a DLC that added a new level of difficulty to their skirmish mode. A new, super hard difficulty for each map. I loved it. Easily my favorite DLC for that game.
Seriously. I want 'the first time you defend against Tyranids on primarch in the original DoW 2 and everyone is getting one shotted by venom cannons oh jesus what the fuck' kind of difficulty again. The last two games have been fun but unfulfilling, especially the final bosses.
Agreed. I can't remember if I've said this before, but it is okay to have your hardest difficulty be unreasonably hard like Primarch in original DoW2 was. I'd rather have that extreme and not take it than it not be there at all.
People will understand if a difficulty is too hard for them soon enough. Most casual sorts of players who might be turned off by a game being too hard will lowball their difficulty setting when choosing it.
Not that I disagree, but I can't be remembering a different thread where there was endless, endless griping about the campaign difficulty, things like insta-kills and "cheap" bosses in DoW2, and even Chaos Rising.
The bosses on the hardest setting were basically examples of the worst game design known to man. How anyone could find them enjoyable is completely beyond my understanding.

Hmmm, THQ's online store has DoW2 Retribution for 20 bucks right now, instead of 30. I think it's about time to jump back into DoW2, after missing out on Chaos Rising.
The question I've got is... how's THQ's PC download service? Do they let you redownload games later, like Steam? I've never used THQ's store before.

It's Steamworks, just buy the game, get the key and put it into Steam.

If you're talking about the 2nd and 3rd DoW2 entries last bosses, sure. They were really boring. The end boss from Retribution in particular was a huge waste of time.
5*General: You mentioned in response to an earlier question that "DLC has justified more people than we otherwise would have had", and in our first interview you mentioned that you would be using Dark Angels to gauge future DLC and such. Does this mean that Dark Angels was successful, and as a result not only is more DLC- like the upcoming Last Stand DLC- forthcoming, but more developer support than Retribution would otherwise have at this stage?
Jeff Lydell: A little background on DLC. We had planned to do TLSalone from the beginning, since it was something no one had tried before. On every DOW2 game we've done retailer exclusive sets of wargear, and Retribution was doing the same. The only thing different about Retribution was we decided to sell the pre-order wargear at launch, and the sales were astounding. So we decided we needed to follow up with more DLC, just to see how it would do. We planned out two offerings in a hurry; The Dark Angels, and the new Last Stand gear that's coming up right now. The idea was try two more different types of DLC: a chapter pack and a Last Stand offering. To answer your question, yes, the Dark Angels did very well. More people bought it than I ever expected. As for post-launch support on Retribution, we were always going to have something, but it wasn't going to be large or very frequent. Mostly due to competing projects within the studio.
5*General: So DLC definitely seems to be raising-up Dawn of War 2- good to hear! And it also sounds like we're going to be seeing more cosmetic DLC! Any chance of featuring Chaos or Eldar or Imperial Guard or even Tyranids next?
Jeff Lydell: Maybe. I'd really like to do more chapter packs. Plus if the Last Stand wargear does well we could see more there. It's an easy case to make if we make money on the DLC Personally I expect The Last Stand DLC to do better than the Dark Angels did. Last Stand players are similar in size to the multiplayer modes, plus the wargear will have gameplay uses.
So basically the DLC stuff is doing well, so we can probably expect more of it in future.
I know I certainly saw more robed Space Marines running around than I would've expected when the DLC first launched.
I'd love to see Race DLC. Like rather than buying a whole new game, paying $12 or something for a new race in multiplayer....mostly i just want sisters of battle in DoW 2.

I got my hands on the Spehss Mehreen (I couldn't resist.) Mk 3 Power Armor and Shield DLC. It's pretty cool though the armor itself does quickly become obsolete because of its CRAPTASTIC defensive capabilities.
The shield is amazing, though. My dude has a Power Axe now- with the Mk 3 armor that's a lot of damage output but he's squishier than a Space Marine has any right being.

That's pretty awesome.
On a side note, Nailbrain with the Static Charge and the KABOOM! item is hilarious. Teleport him into a middle of guys with a full static charge, blow shit up. Teleport into another group, blow yourself up.

He updated the article about how dumb he is. I am so very amused.
Thanks 40k fans.
He said that he's been walking into rooms and giving his opinions about things, professionally, for 15 years.
Professionally.
I like how in his apology he still says that they're ripping off Gears of War, and that they're trying to 'ratchet up enthusiasm for 40k by copying Gears'. Like, does 40k not have enthusiasm enough? I think he thinks 40k is still just based on PC games.
Yeah, neither am I, but damnit man everything Relic does is just so sexy . You guys are the only company that puts out games that I day 1 preorder blindly and unquestioningly.
So when are you guys gonna announce Homeworld 3? 8-)
Why does it take so damn long to find a match with 4,000+ people online?
DId I miss something? Is 3v3 ranked not popular? I thought the switch from GFWL to Steam was suppose to fix this horrible matchmaking.
That switch really helped the horrible mismatch in players fighting players who were way above them or below them in skill. Which probably cut down on the amount of the playerbase that you could get a game with... assuming that you've completed your 10 placement matches.
It also helped with connectivity though, I'd bet...

Personally I feel the matchup time's roughly the same, but the quality of the matchups improved a lot (I prefer 3v3's as well).
In any case, you need to bear in mind, out of that 4000-ish players, roughly half are there for Last Stand.
And then, divide further because most of those people aren't actually going to be looking for matches, they're currently in matches.
So with some hefty guessing, assuming average match length of say, 25 minutes, and another 5 on average for searching (most people probably won't be searching for that long), you've got maybe 300-400 people searching for a multiplayer matchup during a given period.
So out of what's left, you've also got to subdivide them into those looking for 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3, and I'm not about to guess how that's divided. And then also subdivide further by skill rankings.
So yeah, there's just about enough players around that the system works out, it's just sometimes going to take a little bit longer.
EDIt: What Canis said. I haven't really had an issue with matchmaking since the switch to Steamworks. Games are usually much better matched up by default, and I typically just use the Steam web browser for a bit when it's looking anyway, if it's taking its time.
Last Stand is THAT popular? Huh, just not my cup of tea. Overly repetitive for my likes.
I must say I haven't been getting my butt kicked nearly as much in Retribution as I was in Chaos Rising so I suppose the quality of matchmaking is better.
Jeff Lydell: Maybe. I'd really like to do more chapter packs. Plus if the Last Stand wargear does well we could see more there. It certainly explains why they broke it off into its own standalone release.
Personally I never really played LS all that much, although I suspect that's just down to the fact that playing with pubs doesn't get you too far typically.
If you play a decent LG you don't need the pubs to get to like wave 17. :P
It's a fun mode to dink around in for an hour or two, but it really needs more maps badly. Which is kind of dumb because it should be really simple to pump 3-4 of those out and charge $5 for them.

My Hive Tyrant's setup can basically solo his way up to that wave . The HT in general is so god damn powerful once you break into the mid levels that it's kinda silly.

You can get a pack of all twelve items for ten bucks. Still pretty steep though. Think I'm gonna wait to see if they drop this or it goes on sale.

It was. But it was a purely personal guffaw, in no way representing the guffaws of Relic Entertainment, Games Workshop, or THQ, Inc.
I don't see that you've got ANYTHING to laugh about when you're so cleanly ripping off everything that Epic has worked so hard on to date, do you?!
Just you wait, the next knock on the door will be from CliffyB's lawyers, you'll see.
I'll bet that was an, "Oh no, we've been found out!" style guffaw.
P.S. I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet.

Or maybe just the matchmaker showing a bit more info like the COHO one did. (I miss COHO).
