Project: Firestart

It was so awesome to see a mention of this ancient but groundbreaking game in the latest news here:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/2011/2/2/

I have been telling my friends stories about the days of yore and my first encounter with space survival horror through that very game. Most of them are either too young to have experienced it or just missed it back in the days when it was new.

So, how many of you have actually played it?

I always mention project firestart whenever the "scary game" threads come up. So many creepy memories from this game!

I guess I missed it. I didn't even know what he was talking about in that news post.

e: I think my first 'scary game' was Parasite Eve, and it wasn't all that scary.

Easy to miss. Came out in 1989 for the C64.

    Lots of fun though.

I just read that entry and felt compelled to immediately sign up and reply.

Project Firestart was probably the only game to make me literally piss my pants.

And I didn't even die! I finished it in one setting. But oh boy, that crap is scary. And the original Alone in the Dark also creeped me out a lot, and I didn't even own a soundcard...

Nowadays survival horror means gibbing dozens of zombies with unlimited ammo. Now, that can be funny too (Dead Rising anyone?).

I never managed to finish that game. It freaked me out too much.

Well, in the future, that's the miracle of the edit button.

Same explaining power, more ass covering lies about how you never did it in the first place.

How would one go about getting and playing this game?

OMG I loved this game as a kid.

But, I never finished it! I still remember all the different options I tried to get things done. Oh man, flashbacks just from the different things you could find or could happen to you, and everything so creepy. I always ended up dying... one way or another.
Anyway, great game and a good flashback. I think someone did a remake/update but not sure if it's worth checking out.

Reminds me of all the other games I liked that I kind of wish were updated from the C64. Elite is one. Also, all those D&D games.

It is a C64 game, so you can probably find and play it, but that would be beyond the scope of this forum.
