Windows Update Help

Hey guys, thanks in advance for reading

At my University halls in order to use the internet provided you must log on to a piece of software which checks your computer for errors before the internet can be used (It's called Bradford Dissolveable fyi). Now when I did this it told me that Vista was not upgraded fully, I needed several updates as well as SP2 before I could log in (I'm on the internal University system right now).

So I checked this out and it was true, there were several updates which were needed. I tried to install them all and was prompted to restart, which I did, but when the computed restarted and the configuring updates message came up, it ended with "updates failed to configure, reverting changes." I tried this a few times, same problem. Checking the error messages I found the error code 80071AA7, which I googled and didn't exactly get far with.

Then I decided I'd try something else. Going to the list of updates (24 needed, I believe), I then installed them by groups based on publishing date, to see if it was a problem with the updater, the order of the updates, or a specific update. This worked fine until I got to one group where the same message came up. Then I installed them one by one and found that a particular update regularly failed to install when I put it in by itself, update KB 981997.

Whenever I try and install this one, I get the error code 80070643. Now this one does have a section in Windows Help about restarting the OSE (I think, whatever that is) but that didn't work either. So now I am here to ask for your help, you lovely lovely people, because I am tired of having to walk to University every time I need to go on the Internet.

EDIT: Also be aware that while it appears my laptop can access the internet to downlaod updates through the medium of Windows Updater I cannot manually go on there, search for the damn update and then install it myself, which was something I thought of. I might be able to download on the university network, put it on a USB file and take it home though.
