To be honest, the video was more exciting for the technology shown and the last 5 seconds of footage. Yes that earthquake was awesome (forgetting reality, who cares) but the gameplay at that point seemed pretty standard. Excited by how damn purty it looks too.
We dont know for sure it was actually an earthquake or (as several people have surmised) an underground nuclear test. It seems odd for a war game to place so much emphasis on a seemingly natural event, given how much DICE has talked about the event in previews.
Then again, this was more of a tech demo than anything else, so we could be reading more into it than is really there. And as Mvrck stated, we pretty much know the multiplayer will be more of the same battlefield goodness, just in a shiny new wrapper. Things like game modes, jets and other finer details will likely be revealed at E3, where many more people will be paying attention; a perfect time for DICE to put their best foot forward.
Counterpoint: Iran has a lot of earthquakes. More than any nation outside the pacific rim.
Now, for an earthquake to bring down a tower block like that, and split the earth, it would have to be ludicrous magnitude. And it would last for minutes, not seconds.
But the video series is called fault lines.
I didn't see the video before it got taken down and don't care enough to hunt for it, but the most recent christchurch earthquake was a fairly short 6.3 and nearly completely destroyed at least two largeish buildings (pyne gould and CTV), possibly more but the media has focused on those because people got trapped in them. wikipedia has before and after shots (that's after some rubble was cleared I guess, but it wasn't much better right after the quake).
Also my purchasing of this game is dependant on the M14 being just as wonderfully broken (and under-used) as it was in BC2. M14/Dart/RPG Engineer is Best Engineer.
How is it broken? I love using the M14 with a variety of different classes.
That sucker pops a punch and you can reach out and touch someone from across the map with one shot.
<3M14
The M14 isn't broken at all, in fact it's the most skill-rewarding weapon in the game
It's also semi-automatic so my heavy trigger finger doesn't penalize me
But it is so fucking good when you turn the corner and plug someone in the head twice before they can lolM60 you down

No doubt many strengths of earthquake can bring down a building, even a very large one. But mainly through vibrations and the fracturing of brittle foundations under tremendous lateral and vertical stress.
Not because the earthquake split the land itself asunder and sent ripples of dirt out in all directions.
It was visually very impressive, but also made no sense at all. Unless that 'not really an earthquake' hypothesis turns out true.

I'm pretty sure DICE themselves stated it was an earthquake.
Also, would pavement not crack under a severe enough earthquake? Looking around on google, theres plenty of pictures of roads/pavement being pretty tore up from one. And thats what i took as happening in the video, not magic ripples as you seem to be so mad about.

Last I heard, BF3 won't support DX9. Not sure how that works out for the 360 version, maybe they're supporting it only on the consoles.
Yeah, they have said they're not supporting DX9 (and by extension WinXP) with Frostbite 2. They're specifically targeting DX10/11, 64-bit systems on the PC side.
This is the first game I am considering buying a new PC for in about 3 years...
I will be relying heavily on your good poeple for advice on building one...
If you want to avoid all the agony of building a pc from scratch CyberPowerPC does amazing work and they don't charge those insane ripoff prices you usually see from computer building companies. It's usually only 100 or 200 dollars over what it would have cost to buy the parts yourself, at least it did when I purchased from them a year ago. Their quality and tech support is A+ also. Even if you love building a pc yourself it's still a good place to go to ask for configuration advice and stuff like that.
I think we already recieved a BF-ish Middle Earth game, do I need to drudge it up?
As for 3 I might be redoing a huge OP and sorting out squads if folks want to get serious about it, the last time we did such it worked out well, which was in 2142. BC2 was more shenanigans than anything, this one is looking to be more traditional BF play, woo!

Oh good lord. This game will have eight squads per team, won't it?
I really am wondering if they're putting in Rush Mode alongside the classic Conquest. I reaaaaaaaaaaaally want to play Rush on a team of thirty two people in a huge urban map with millions of angles and methods of attack. Of course, the only one I'll ever use is ploughing straight through the middle with a shotgun, throwing grenades and hollering "REVIVE ME" and "AMMO" over Vent constantly.
Hey, if I have just one squad backing me up, that leaves seven others to do the flanking and being actually useful. I'm the loudest and proudest distraction around, because I just fucking love crushing faces with little metal balls fired at high velocity.
Also, something just occurred to me while playing Mirror's Edge. They implemented actual particle physics in the game, using PhysX. You can run through a cloud of steam, look back and see the trail you made with the steam slowly moving outwards from the path.
I fucking want that with smoke grenades in BF3.

Helos throwing dust and smoke in a real manner would look cool and actually be a game play mechanic.
Imagine what a five+ story building collapse would make. Right after the twin towers collapsed, the streets were just flooded with massive clouds of dust and debris for blocks around. That kind of effect could even become a tactic in BF3. Drop an entire building and use the resulting debris cloud to mask squad movements and set up ambushes.
Oh god I'm creating disappointmnt for myself again aren't i

Okay...see, I was in high school about four blocks away when that happened.

That was an odd day, to put it mildly.
I wonder if PTSD is a legitimate concern when making games like these.

If this is any sort of sequel to BF2, it will have real and truly useful in-game voice chat, with squad level and commander level channels. Not that unusable crap from BC2.

Nah, just a cardboard cutout with "VOIP" hastily scrawled on it in blue sharpie, and one of those noisemakers from an audio greeting card, taped to the back and set to repeat.

BF2 chat was more fun when the commander was French and even though the rest of our team knew not a word of the language, nor did he know English, we fucking soldiered on to a triumphant utter defeat.

I would feel safe in venturing that DX9 will remain the standard until the next console hardware cycle. Because the X360 runs on it.

Imagine a map where halfway through a round there's a vast airstrike, buildings collapse and for like 10 minutes you're fighting in thick smoke.
It's doable on today's technology. But doable doesn't always mean worthwhile, especially if they plan on a console parity.
