The steam voice chat got a haul-over a little while ago, I wonder how it performs now. One thing that's been fixed is that you can finally output the voice chat on a different device (like a headset) than the in-game audio. That used to be the deal breaker for me.

Hey, if I have just one squad backing me up, that leaves seven others to do the flanking and being actually useful. I'm the loudest and proudest distraction around, because I just fucking love crushing faces with little metal balls fired at high velocity.

I will be relying heavily on your good poeple for advice on building one...

    what would be your budget?

Ugh, to be perfectly honest I am not 100% positive at the moment. Couple things to get out of the way before we delve in to all of this:
    1. I am literally starting from scratch (not even a monitor, I currently have a laptop)
    2. I am in Canada, so none of the awesome discount sites you mention apply to me without paying a kings ransom for shipping (as far as I know)
    3. I am so out of touch with PC hardware, I have no idea what is even good or not (haven't owned a desktop in 5-6 years)

So I have trouble figuring a budget even to start with due to my very limited knowledge of PC hardware. I once built a very decent gaming puter for around $700 back in the day but I don't know how far I can get with that money currently.

If anyone could throw out some suggestions to get me started, that would be fantastic.

$700 CDN might not get you quite as far as $700 US, but you'll still be able to build a capable rig for that price. My suggestion would be to get a monitor with a screen resolution of 1680x1050 or smaller, that way you're not sacrificing too much visual performance getting a more affordable graphics card.

As for there being "no good discount sites", I believe Newegg.ca would like to have a word with you ;-)

    Just as an example:

    Phenom II X4 VISION SuperCombo
    +
    ASUS GTX 460
    +
ASUS Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor

with a copy of Win 7 Home is about $730 CDN. Only thing it's missing is a good set of speakers/headphones, and keyboard/mouse, and that would be a fairly capable machine. You can back down from there and decide what you're willing to live with if you want to go cheaper (ie less video card, or a slower CPU). This is just an example, and in no way an actual suggestion about what parts would be the best for your limited funds.

Now your other option is to pick up second hand parts for a lot cheaper, though you are risking getting a bad part with no warranty to save a few extra bucks.

We might want to take this into the Computer Build thread, which is now back (and stickied) in Moe's.

personally i would throw in a 5770 instead of the 460, since they're about the same and the radeon is cheaper

I would say spending around $1000 is what I am looking for. I will chekc out the options you both provided, but I think a visit to that thread you mentioned is in order.

I spent about $1000 on the machine I have right now, a pre-built from a retail store, and it was actually pretty good, and in Canada too!

Although the same machine costs $700 just across the border in the US. Even with the conversion that's still a big difference.

Fake Edit: I bought it from Future Shop, and it came with a Keyboard and Mouse, no monitor. If you're patient and know what you're doing, you can build a awesome machine for even less. I didn't go that route because I didn't really know what I was doing myself.

Our goal with the BC2 flight mechanics was to create an easy to pickup and fly flight model. We did just that and thus I feel like we succeeded. We achieved what we set out to create, and it was well received by many players who previously could not have a flying experience in Battlefield.

The flight physics are actually a great example of why BF3 is a sequel to BF2 and part of the Core Battlefield Franchise. The prevailing design philosophy of the Battlefield Core has always been Easy to Use, Difficult to Master. Bad Company had greater emphasis on Easy To Use. We're approaching BF3 with an emphasis on Difficult to Master, and that Design Philosophy is prevalent throughout all parts of BF3. I've learned a lot from working on Bad Company, I'm convinced it's possible to maintain the incredibly deep game play of Battlefield without putting off new gamers. And it's incredibly important we keep that depth.

Also confirmed was that you have to land completely to refuel and rearm, instead of flying over the airfield/carrier to get resupplied. More chance to crash, more chance for enemy players to kill you while on the ground, and it means supply lines have to be kept open. Fucking awesome.
