Yeah cover fire is kind of pointless most of the time unless they add some weird mechanics into the game. If someone is shooting at me and I am not dead, I kill them. Pretty simple.
Most of the maps were a mess and there wasn't a helicopter or AT class equivelant from what I could tell.
Uh, there were two different chopper equivs. You had an APC in the original, and a goddamned rolling fortress in Northern Strike. Map design was iffy. A lot of the issues with the maps were the stupid lod shading that Northern Strike fixed in a lot of it's maps. The fact that you couldn't see 20 feet in front of you in Tunis was annoying as hell, I will give you that.
But from a pure gameplay mechanic perspective, class balance, unlocks, and communication (dear god I want 2142's com system back), it was a superior game to BC2 for multiplayer in my opinion. The bigger teams helped too.

I just remember the helicopters were like crippled less fun verisons of the ones in BF2.

2142 did have it's issues, mostly technical gubbins and a few game breaking bugs (pod surfing), but not being fun wasn't one of them.

Some of the maps were a mess, I'll give you that. But no more than most of the linear crap we get with BC2. And all the Titan maps other than Minsk were great.
And Engineer / AT are the same class now. Was like that in 2142, BC1, BC2, and almost assuredly will be in BF3.

Are you sure you are talking about 2142? Because there were 2 helicopers an assault and a transport, and they basically even looked like helicopters without rotoblades.

Yeah I hope we don't get BC2 maps in BF3. I would be fine with a few, but BF3 demands Battlefield style maps, not wolfenstein maps.
Titan is still, to date, one of my absolute favorite game types in a multiplayer shooter.
Everyone remembers their first drop onto an enemy titan and their first enemy titan destroyed survivor .. pin... medal thingie... I don't remember what it's called xD
I thought BC2 classes were perfect except switch the Medic's and Engineer's weapons. Just makes more sense to me to have it that way.
I don't know about that, giving the medics LMGs seems encourage most people to go to the front more often. I see a lot more medics involved in gunfights than I do engineers, at any rate.

I don't know why, but the pins and medals in 2142 seemed like they were much harder to get than in BC2. You really felt like you earned them.

Yeah except that running around a titan produced all sorts of lag; my entire experience with 2142 is pretty much lag. I hated it.

Not enough lime in the world.
Using the APC's pods to land on the Titan (or even just to eject out of one about to blow up) is still one of my favorite things in a game.
Also, the squad leader beacon that let you drop in from orbit. So cool being able to see the battlefield from above as you fall towards your destination.

I remember the frantic firefights in the loading bay and hallways of the titan as the whole round came to a crecendo... then leaping off as it blew up... no purpose to it but it added to the overall feel.

Im bored at work so im going to rank all of the BF games ive played... feel free to join along. (Let me preface this by saying I love all of these games)
5. Battlefield 1942 - Joined this party a little late... by then the graphics were dated
4. Battlefield 1943 - Quick, simple and fun access to BF on my PS3
3. Battlefield BC2 - This game is everything ive ever wanted in a game... a near perfect balance between fun and realism
2. Battlefield 2 - The one that really started it all for me. I had never played anything like it before hand. Strike at Karkand is still my favorite map of any game.
1. Battlefield 2142 - This is blasphemy I know but this game took everything I loved about BF2 and added a near future science fiction flair that hasnt been equalled. Not bad for a "glorified expansion pack" amirite? Also Titan mode.

If I had to rate my favorite BF games it would be:
1: Battlefield:1942
Everything since this has been scaled back or down in some way. Rememerbing the beached destroyers and literally panicking when driving a tank and hearing an approaching plane coming behind, waiting for the bomb to be dropped on me... >< Then there was this little mode in BF1942 called capture the flag, it was awesome, I remember pikcing guys up by flying over them in the Stalka or whatever that plane was called, shit was fun but not many tried it.
It even had one of the best mods for a game I've ever played, Desert Combat. The amazing modders added all sorts of fun modern vehicles into the game. I remember setting up mortors and i think even sandbags. it was really well done and the end of my BF1942 play time consisted soly of this mod.
Wake island demo that started it all. I remember the video I watched that got me to download the demo in the first place, back in 2002: (seriously if I hadn't watched this video I may have never got into the battlefield series of games.. scary!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA27aFKqNT4
2: Battlefield Bad Company 2
I really really enjoy this game. I love everything about it form the amazing sound to weapons and vehicles. The awesome terrain and enviromental damage,The only hard thing to do is find a good balanced server where one side doesn't get destroyed. not much else to say that hasn't been said about how awesome Bad Company 2 can be. 3: Battlefield 2
Fun game played it a ton, slimmed down on what you could do in BF1942 but still has tons to work with. Stupid jets <.<, was never a fan of them, but everything else was awesome. Eventually though the bugs, especially the enemies showing as friendlies bug and the [/rant] total fucking worthless teammates who were completely useless who had have been mentally challenged[/endrant] caused me to just stop playing it altogether.
Never played 2142 enough to get into it, didn't really enjoy the demo when it was out so i never picked it up. Never bothered with Bad Company 1, it looked neat at the time but i didn't even consider it a true BF game, though that changed when I saw how awesome BC2 looked.
Would anyone be interested in actually playing these games?
(2142, 2 heck even 1942)

If the bullet-hit flinching makes it into MP, cover fire will be guaranteed.
Bwah?
Walkers weren't fun? Gunships weren't fun? Hover tanks weren't fun? Roller Mines weren't fun? Railguns weren't fun? Drop Pods weren't fun? EMP grenades weren't fun? Bubble shields weren't fun? Airburst rockets weren't fun? Titan fights weren't fun?
