That doesn't actually resolve the problem that we have to do a fighting retreat most of the time. In fact it will make it worse if they don't fix the damage problem.

I assume if they are taking it out though that they will tweak combat so that it is not necessary, so that is probably good news.

There was stuff about shield bashing and the like in that article, so I think there will be more to melee than clicking over and over.

    @ Foolish Chaos & Enig

That GI article does actually talk about that problem quite specifically. To allay your fears:

"The team found that most encounters featured more jostling and staggering than was present in past Elder Scrolls titles. Using the Havok Behavior animation system, the team is more accurately mimicking the imbalance prevalent in melee combat by adding staggering affects and camera shake. Don't expect button-mashing marathons where the attacker with a bigger life pool wins the war of attrition. If you're not careful on defense you may get knocked around, losing your balance and leaving yourself exposed for a damaging blow that can turn the tide of the battle. Knowing when to block, when to strike, and when to stand your ground is key to prevailing in combat. "

Fuck, I like the sound of pretty much everything, particularly the bit about being able to shoot down Dragons.

I've planned my character already and it seems like a light armoured, dual axe wielding ranger/archer (i'm thinking Bard in the Hobbit here) is going to be pretty awesome.

I'm replaying oblivion as a Mage, and to re-experience the general crappiness of stuff.

Like the arena, which roars with the sounds of thousands, but has about 8 people in the stands.

I'm really looking forward to ignoring the flaws of this new game too.

Podcast transcript. For those that enjoy reading Todd dancing around every damn question. I'm largely taking his (total non-)response to the 64-bit question as practically confirmation there isn't one (which would fit with the fact that it's being built on a "rebuilt" version of Gamebryo.

I'm just gonna put this here: 64-bit is dying. New 32-bit architecture that overcomes the 3GB limit (among other things) is here and companies would rather continue working with the old than continue to pump life support into a new architecture that hasn't gained any traction since it was mass-released 10 years ago

Well yes you can buy 64-bit operating systems but look at the support for them

The majority of programs ran on an AMD64 platform are still i386. Major manufacturers are already going back to i386 on their servers and workstations. If 64-bit had truly caught on, then we'd see much more driver/software/firmware support

The only time I've ever had issues with software support was on 64-bit XP. 64-bit Win7 has been great.

The only reason you don't see programs universally in 64-bit is because most 32-bit code will run natively on a 64-bit setup. If a program doesn't have compatibility issues and isn't benefiting from the extra addressable space or anything, it isn't worth anyone's time to develop, distribute, or use a separate version.

What? I never heard about such thing. There's a hard limit of 4GB on 32-bit memory addressing...

That's like saying IPv6 is dead.

The only reason we aren't seeing more widespread 64-bit support is it's simply unnecessary now. When games start needing 4GB or more memory you'll see universal 64-bit support. A lot hangs on the next generation of consoles, if they have 2GB+ RAM you'll see 64-bit support catch on in PC gaming pretty fast.

64-bit is here to stay, if only because 64 bits sounds better than 32 bits to the vast majority of people who run consumer-level machines. Nearly half of Windows 7 installations have been 64-bit, and there's no reason that trend won't continue as people get used to using 64-bit editions of everything.

Also, fuck address extension. I went through five different PCs running XP, and not a single one of them didn't shit itself at random moments because of incompatibilities between apps and PAE.

It also doesn't solve the fundamental problem of applications addressing memory.

Again, "IPv6 is dead because we have NAT"

I'm probably LTTP, but it amuses me that Bethesda gave Oblivion players a huge number of options for customizing a character's face, only to have them bitch because they could make their characters looks freakish. It's like, what's up with clay? I can totally make tits or a shoddy bowl with it, shit is hella broken.

This. The freakish-looking characters people made for giggles were more a humorous illustration of how bad the Oblivion character designer was. I have never made an Oblivion character I thought was more than just decent looking, and most NPCs were potato-faced uggos.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but for my money if you have an Oblivion character you think is gorgeous you're probably A) using mods or B) possessed of very low standards.

OK, yeah, there's that too. It didn't help that you create your character in the dank dungeon cell where the lighting sucks.

Yeah, the Oblivion character gen was pretty awful.

The new system for Skyrim of switching between premade facial parts (noses, ears, eyes, etc) sounds like a good way to make character creation easier without sacrificing too much customisability.

DA's character creator wasn't bad, but it suffered the same problem as Oblivion, Fallout 3, and NV. Dark and awful lighting messing with how the character actually looks.

I swear there must be some rule with RPGs that states that the character creator must have lighting conditions absolutely nothing like the game itself.

Nobody cares about Triarii unless they just loaded up RTW for the first time and are wondering where the fuck their Legionaries are and why there are Greeks and Carthaginians on Roman land.

    Edit:

But on the Javelin part, I was wondering about that. F:NV had javelins of sorts, so I wonder if they'd do that. To be honest though, I think Bethesda is going to keep it simple and just stick with the Bow.

Pila. Plural of Pilum. Far more complex than the ordinary stuff.

Every martial arts movie I've ever seen claims that pole arms are excellent. Heck, even a robot in that Ben Affleck movie kicked ass with a pole. THe point I'm trying to make is this. I want some akvari grand master to be sealed in a cave meditating for centuries in the golden lotus position; sitting at the end of a trial of a lot of dead dragons, trolls, ogres, and soldiers with a single wooden stick laying on his lap.
