Is Monster Hunter Freedom Unite essentially mindless?
I mean story-wise. I kind of want to play something on my PSP that doesn't have any story but I can get involved in without worrying about missable items, cutscenes, characters, or anything. I've never played a Monster Hunter game before. I did play through Phantasy Star Universe and I heard they are similar in style?
Anyway, I'm not interested in multi-player, just single-player, but I want something a little less ugly than Untold Legends, so I thought of of MHFUnite. Thoughts? Or any other PSN-buyable recommendations?
What about sim-type games? Are there any good ones on the PSP (available via PSN)?

It has no story at all but it's a very acquired taste. There are a couple of similar games on the horizon that might be a bit more accessible and less multiplayer focused. God Eater and one that has a name so generic I've forgotten it. The latter has a demo.
What about the Nippon Ichi Roguelike? There is the usual half-arsed attempt at a plot, but it's skippable.

Which game is that (the NI roguelike)?
And this is like an impulse purchase kind of thing, so only games that are currently available will work. I basically want to get my mind off of shit, but I don't want to replace it with thinking about RPG shit, either. I basically want something that will distract me into non-thinking.
I did like Phantasy Star Universe, though after awhile I started actually getting annoyed at how much "story" there was even in that (though there wasn't much). If MHFUnite is similar to PSU, but with less story, it might actually be exactly what I want right now.
It's definitely mindless from a story perspective. However, the battles are far from mindless (like the Phantasy Star Online games). Many of them require sound strategy and quick reflexes or else you'll die...ALOT (and you will die ALOT)
But the game is extremely fun, I logged a couple 100 hours into MHFU

I guess I meant story-mindless and having to hunt obsessively for permanent missables mindless. Heavy action and action-strategy is fine.

In that case, yes, it's mindless. As far as I know nothing is missable and the story is pretty much non existant.

The story for Monster Hunter is that you're the town's new go-to guy for killing beasties, fresh from hunter college or whatever. Then you're in the town, and you have the stores, the farm, your house and the Elder that gives you your missions.
The Training School is kind of wordy, but it's very helpful in how different all the weapons play.
Each mission has a short story blurb on the Quest screen, but they don't factor into the gameplay at all, and are just there for flavor.
And no, nothing is missable. Everything is repeatable/obtainable.
I'd suggest trying to get it cheap, though. It's been out a while, and if you end up enjoying it, you'll definitely want the next game in the series whenever it gets localized.

$20 on PSN isn't bad, right?

It has a stupid name. Zero Heart Ranger: Really Long Subtitle. Something like that. I'm pretty sure it's on the online store though.

Thanks. I think I'll pick it up. $20, whatever.
