I am on the hunt for a 5.1 headset that will work with my PC and console. I know I will not get the best sound with a combined unit but, for me I think a headset best fits my needs. I currently use an on board sound card for the PC and my TV speakers for the console (eg. room to improve). I was hoping I could get some opinions on the following headsets and any advice if I've missed a good contender:
AstroGaming series - These are expensive but, they seem fully featured. I like the idea of the DAC being a separate SKU, so you don't have a single, expensive, monolithic device to replace upon breaking a single piece.
Tritton series - Mid range price. A few friends have these for their console but, I've heard about poor cable design or "cheap" design.
TurtleBeach series - Mid to low range price. The extra long cable is nice as my couch and TV have some distance between them.
Also, is wireless worth it? The frequency range seems to be right in the middle 802.11n channel range so, I'm concerned about wasting my money if I were to get a wireless version. Any opinions and reputable review sites would be appreciated.
Best headsets I've found for gaming are the ones that aren't necessarily built for gaming.
Try Bose, or Sennheiser. My headset for the past two years has been the latter, and it's been wonderful despite the low price. I'll post the model once I find it.
Haven't tried wireless; from what I've heard, though, the compensation is usually price, not quality.
EDIT: ugh, can't find the model. This might meet your needs, but if not you can check the next model up.
DOUBLE EDIT: nevermind, you said 5.1. I know I saw a model that had that while I was shopping around...
