The custom map browser is the worst problem with SC2, it's actively driving map makers away. Nothing new ever pops up because it's pretty much impossible for it to
Blizz better have a fire under their ass to fix that shit
The problem is that, unlike chat channels, there is no simple solution to custom games. They can't just implement a known solution (the old system of wc3 and bw were better, but still bad).
It is really disappointing, I was expecting a lot more from customs in SC2. Not sure I'd call it the worst problem with SC2 though, since I always viewed customs as sort of a really great bonus.

A good system would be the old type, where you host and name a game. However, throw in a search engine that allows you to search for keywords in the name, as well as a filter to show only certain game types like dota or tug-of-war
And yes, it's the worst problem. Most stuff in SC2 works pretty well, custom games list however is utter crap

All you'd need to implement for customs to be viable would be a decent search engine in which you could specify categories and/or tags (ie 'new+RPG' or 'team+tower defense'), along with some sort or upvote/downvote system.
yeah, I think there just needs to be a new genre that builds upon what starcraft 2 has to offer, rather than trying to port all that war3 accomplished.
I think SC2 has lots of great custom games. Personally, I blame the b.net 2.0 layout on the lackluster response to custom games, not the map themselves. Either Blizzard will fix their dumbass implementation with b.net 2.0, or custom games will forever be just an after-thought.
its like SC2 is doing a total 180 compared to War3
in War3 custom maps ruled the world and not many cared about ladder
in SC2 it's the opposite it seems
Starcraft's custom map browser is absolutely horrendous. It promotes a limited pool of popular maps, and the games you would hope for like the DotA clone are far too laggy to ever be any real competition for the standalone MOBAs that now exist.
I am continuing my one mission per month progress through this game. On brutal, granted.
Currently stuck on The Dig, only because it feels slightly more beatable than GTR. Any tips?
My usual strategy of "build tanks, marines and medics" does not seem to be working. I had 48 marines and a number of medics when I assaulted one of the bases; I lost them all within a few seconds. I don't see an easy way to take my tanks off of turtle duty long enough to take a base; likewise, the laser seems to turn too slowly.
You don't have to attack the bases in The Dig, you just have to turtle up until the laser does it's job. When you see an attack coming, queue up laser attacks on all the big targets.
If you're trying to take out the bases for the achievement, use a floating barracks to spot up the ramps and let the laser wreck shit. Or if you've unlocked them, use flying units or orbital scans

Expand almost immediately to the nearby natural and wall off with bunkers.
Have an SCV repair crew shoring up your top-left / natural bunker walls full time.
Micro the hell out of the laser. I think shift-queuing priority targets might remove most of the swivel delay.

Use that laser on the Archons and watch them go poof!
That was one of the funnest missions just for that.
Then you go on the offensive and start taking out their bases with the laser.
Dear goodness, Queens are seriously amazing. I've tried building lots of queens before, after watching Dimaga do so for banshee rushes. But just keeping steady queen production, or at least being aware of building more on your spare hatch (not going lair, burrow, etc) is a really good idea.
Beat off a terran marauder allin after he saw me going roaches, thanks to my queen swarm. Beat off a Protoss who void ray + phoenix rushed, by having about 4 queens when the two fliers turned up.
That was amazing. Apart from the final game, was kinda anticlimactic.
the final game was some amazing gamesense by Nestea, honestly
Not many zergs would have decided to attack after that push by the protoss
Really?
I thought it was fairly obvious the protoss has put everything he has in that attack. Always easy to say as an observer though. Nesteas play was amazing mind you, I was just pretty darn amped after the game before it :P.
There is seriously nothing more satisfying than keeping a queen alive via transfuse when it has 7 void rays on it.

everytime I watch Brood War it makes me want to play it instead of SC2 but then I try it out lose horribly several times and get frustrated over the interface
SC2 made it really easy to get started, BW just...doesn't. I know if I stick with it for 100+ games I'll be alright and will be able to motivate myself to keep playing past that like I do with SC2 but I just...ehhh
Faced (+ beat) a bunch of Plat guys last night after having taken a break from the game.
Promotion imminent? Fingers crossed.
p.s. I've seen a steady improvement in my play and I now fully believe that after Macro, knowing when to expand (or if to expand) to your nat is the most important thing to develop at this level - moreso than knowing build orders.

I enjoyed BW back in the day, but there's something about being with SC2 right from the very start that keeps me hooked on it.

I never played it the way I play SC2, only did things against the computer and this is the main attraction for me...its new unexplored territory.
I should get Lemming or someone to sit down with me one day and talk me through a first game of BW and what I should focus on.
i like the way bw plays, except zvz that is dumb, although i'm sure it has a lot to do with how refined their play is from years of playing and knowledge
i don't like how clumped and spammy everything is in sc2, and how things like concussive grenades and forcefield "force" a bad end to every situation, like i was watching a tvp in bw the other day and some goons enagaged some tanks but it started to work out badly for the toss so he tried to retreat, but the terran had snuck some vultures around the back of the goons and laid a line of mines trapping the goons and it was totally awesome
but ive never really played it so im sure there'd be things i don't like about it too

I also prefer the economy management of BW.
in SC2, there is rarely any reason to go above 3 bases as Protoss if you can keep your opponent on 3 bases. The ideal amount of workers you want is about 75-80 which is enough to saturate 3 bases. Any more bases than that is a waste. Spreading the workers out gives tiny gains. In Brood War, however, 50 workers on 3 bases would mine a shit-ton less resources than 50 workers on 6 bases. It feels like in Brood War you're rewarded for expanding while SC2 rewards saturating bases that you already have, which is part of why all-ins from one base are so strong (the other part being map size).

Now I can't even find a decent tower defense game. It's kind of absurd.

War3's hero-based game engine lent itself pretty naturally to DotA.
Also Starcraft 2's base game is actually fun :P
how that will be done I don't know
Yeah was great fun, glad you came out. Also did you get promoted last night, your silver now? If so, gratz!
I'm silver on SEA. That's my main.
Because my son uses the US account, I think that will always be bronze!

...and then you find out there's no achievement for doing so after spending half an hour doing it. =(
that's a sign to call it a night
There is one to kill a certain number of buildings with the laser though!

But it's not and the only thing that's stuck with me from SC1 is names for stuff. I, too, sometimes say sunkens instead of spines.
